Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) solids and reducing sugars were examined before, just after, and two weeks after transient water stress to gain an understanding of tuber changes that occur directly associated with water stress. Russet Burbank and A082260-8 potatoes were grown on Owyhee silt loam at the Malheur Experiment Station, Ontario, Oregon. Potatoes were subjected to a single episode of transient water stress by omitting furrow irrigation in either late June, July, or in early August of 1988 and 1989 to examine variety differences in the short term effects of water stress on changes in solids and reducing sugars in tuber stem ends. Irrigation was managed to maintain soil water potential above -65 kPa at 20 cm depth during tuber initiation through bulking except during transient stress when the soil water potential reached -82 to -110 kPa. Tuber samples were taken from plots and minimally stressed check treatments before stress, at the peak of stress, two weeks after the transient stress period, and after harvest. Tubers were sectioned longitudinally and the percent solids and reducing sugars were determined for samples from the tuber stem end, center, and apical end. Longitudinal tuber strips were fried after harvest to determine fry color. Tuber stem-end fry color did not darken in A082260-8 potatoes subjected to water stress. The line A082260-8 had higher stem-end solids and lower stem-end reducing sugars than Russet Burbank. Neither variety responded to transient water stress or recovery from transient stress with an immediate increase in reducing sugars in any tuber part. Reducing sugars were elevated in harvested tubers, particularly in the stem-ends of Russet Burbank potatoes subjected to water stress. Increases in tuber reducing sugars related to transient water stress were not found during the stress period or immediately after stress, but were present in harvested tubers.  相似文献

Connectivity models using empirically-derived landscape resistance maps can predict potential linkages among fragmented animal and plant populations. However, such models have rarely been used to guide systematic decision-making, such as identifying the most important habitat patches and dispersal corridors to protect or restore in order to maximize regional connectivity. Combining resistance models with network theory offers one means of prioritizing management for connectivity, and we applied this approach to a metapopulation of desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis nelsoni) in the Mojave Desert of the southwestern United States. We used a genetic-based landscape resistance model to construct network models of genetic connectivity (potential for gene flow) and demographic connectivity (potential for colonization of empty habitat patches), which may differ because of sex-biased dispersal in bighorn sheep. We identified high-priority habitat patches and corridors and found that the type of connectivity and the network metric used to quantify connectivity had substantial effects on prioritization results, although some features ranked highly across all combinations. Rankings were also sensitive to our empirically-derived estimates of maximum effective dispersal distance, highlighting the importance of this often-ignored parameter. Patch-based analogs of our network metrics predicted both neutral and mitochondrial genetic diversity of 25 populations within the study area. This study demonstrates that network theory can enhance the utility of landscape resistance models as tools for conservation, but it is critical to consider the implications of sex-biased dispersal, the biological relevance of network metrics, and the uncertainty associated with dispersal range and behavior when using this approach.  相似文献

Fuel consumption predictions are necessary to accurately estimate or model fire effects, including pollutant emissions during wildland fires. Fuel and environmental measurements on a series of operational prescribed fires were used to develop empirical models for predicting fuel consumption in big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt.) ecosystems. Models are proposed for predicting fuel consumption during prescribed fires in the fall and the spring. Total prefire fuel loading ranged from 5.3–23.6 Mg · ha?1; between 32% and 92% of the total loading was composed of live and dead big sagebrush. Fuel consumption ranged from 0.8–22.3 Mg · ha?1, which equates to 11–99% of prefire loading (mean = 59%). Model predictors include prefire shrub loading, proportion of area burned, and season of burn for shrub fuels (R2 = 0.91). Models for predicting proportion of area burned for spring and fall fires were also developed (R2 = 0.64 and 0.77 for spring and fall fire models, respectively). Proportion of area burned, an indicator of the patchiness of the fire, was best predicted from the coverage of the herbaceous vegetation layer, wind speed, and slope; for spring fires, day-of-burn 10-h woody fuel moisture content was also an important predictor variable. Models predicted independent shrub consumption measurements within 8.1% (fall) and 12.6% (spring) for sagebrush fires.  相似文献

Serum erythropoietin (Epo) concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA) in normal, polycythemic, and anemic dogs and cats. The serum Epo concentration in normal dogs ( n = 25) ranged from 7 to 37 mU/mL (median, 20 mU/mL); and in normal cats ( n = 11) ranged from 9 to 38 mU/mL (median, 18 mU/mL). Polycythemic animals (PCV < 55% in dogs, > 45% in cats) were classified as those with primary (polycythemia vera), secondary, or polycythemia of uncertain etiology. Dogs with polycythemia vera (PV, n = 8) had a median serum Epo concentration in the normal range (17 mU/mL); cats with PV ( n = 7) also had a median serum Epo concentration that was within the normal range (10 mU/mL). In the category of secondary polycythemias, dogs ( n = 7) (median, 30.7 mU/mL) and cats ( n = 2) had normal Epo concentrations. The median serum Epoconcentration was significantly decreased ( P > .05) in dogs with PV compared with dogs with secondary polycythemias. The median serum Epo concentrations in dogs ( n = 13) and cats ( n = 5) with anemias not due to chronic renal disease were significantly increased ( P > .05) compared with normal dogs and cats. In cats with anemias due to chronic renal disease ( n = 5) the median serum Epo concentration was not significantly different from normal cats. The measurement of the serum EPO concentration may be useful in assessment of anemia or polycythemia but the overlap of values with the normal range in all groups evaluated limit its diagnostic use.  相似文献

Western spruce budworm, Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman, larvae on small Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca [Beissn.] Franco) and western larch (Larix occidentalis Nutt.) trees were protected from ant and bird predation during fourth instar to pupation. Significantly greater budworm densities were found on protected trees than on the controls at the end of the experiment, and significantly greater feeding injury was associated with increased budworm densities on fir. It is concluded that ants and birds remove budworm larvae feeding on small conifer trees and reduce injury up to 50%.  相似文献

Invasive plants are spreading throughout arid and semiarid rangelands of western North America. Long-lived perennial plants that can persist under harsh environmental conditions are needed to compete with invasive species. The objective of this study was to conduct a long-term evaluation of native and introduced grass species planted to suppress and prevent reinvasion of downy brome (Bromus tectorum L.), snakeweed (Gutierrezia sarothrae [Pursh] Britt. & Rusby), and annual forbs. Seeding treatments comprised three introduced grasses: crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum [L.] Gaertner × A. desertorum [Fisch. Ex Link] Schultes), pubescent wheatgrass (Elytrigia intermedia spp. trichophorum [Host] Beauv.), and Russian wildrye (Psathyrostachys junceus [Fisch.] Nevski); a mix of these introduced grass species, three native grasses: bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria spicata [Pursh]), western wheatgrass (Pascopyrum smithii [Rybd.] A. Löve), and squirreltail (Elymus multisetus [J.G. Sm.] Jones); and a mix of these native grass species, or forage kochia (Bassia prostrata [L.] A.J. Scott). The treatments were seeded in October 2003. Frequency and biomass were measured in 2015 and 2017 in Howell, Utah and in 2015 and 2016 in Nephi, Utah. Crested wheatgrass persisted at both locations (> 62% frequency) along with the rhizomatous grass species, pubescent (> 65%) and western wheatgrasses (> 72%). Russian wildrye was still present at Howell (30%) with little remaining at Nephi (7%). Squirreltail frequency was 13% at Howell and 12% at Nephi. Bluebunch wheatgrass was no longer present at either location (< 1%). Forage kochia remained at Nephi (36%) with little remaining at Howell (4%). Downy brome was present at both locations and was suppressed relative to control plots, at Nephi, by crested wheatgrass and the introduced grass mix (< 9%). Downy brome was > 93% in all plots, at Howell, in 2017. In summary, crested, pubescent, and western wheatgrasses were able to persist over 12 yr at both locations.  相似文献
