Soil quality assessment has been recognized as an important step toward understanding the long-term effects of conservation practices within agricultural watersheds. Our objective was to assess soil quality within the South Fork watershed of the Iowa River using various indicators and assessment approaches. Soil samples were collected during 2003 and 2004 from 29 areas of 32 ha (80 acres) each along two transects traversing the watershed. Soil pH, Mehlich III extractable P, K, Ca and Mg, electrical conductivity (EC), total organic carbon (TOC), and total N (TN) were measured. The Soil Management Assessment Framework (SMAF) was used to compute a soil quality index (SQI), while soil loss, the soil tillage intensity rating (STIR), N-leaching potential, and soil conditioning index (SCI) were determined for each sampling area using the 2003 version of the Revised Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE2). Overall, there were no soil fertility limitations within the watershed based on an average pH of 6.96 and extractable P and K levels of 36 and 162 mg kg−1, respectively. Soil loss, STIR, N-leaching, and SCI averaged 1.13 Mg ha−1, 68, 3, and 0.4, respectively. The SMAF analysis indicated soils within the watershed were functioning at 87% of their full potential. The lowest indicator score was associated with TOC (0.60) because the average value was only 28.4 g kg−1. The SCI and SQI indices were positively correlated although since it used measured data, the SMAF appears to provide more information about the effects of management practices within the watershed. Soils in upper landscape positions had lower TOC and C:N ratios indicating an increased risks for both erosion and for nitrate leaching. Background:Whey permeate is an effective lactose source for nursery pigs and the most benefits are obtained when pigs are at 7 to 11 kg BW.Altering weaning ages could cause different length of early-weaner phases until 7 kg BW and thus it would influence the dietary need of whey permeate during 7 to 11 kg BW of pigs.This study aimed to evaluate if weaning ages would affect the dietary needs of whey permeate for optimum growth performance of pigs at 7 to 11 kg BW.Methods:A total of 1,632 pigs were weaned at d 21(d 21.2±1.3)or d 25(d 24.6±1.1)after birth.All pigs had a common early-weaner feeds until they reached 7 kg BW.When pigs reached 7 kg BW within a weaning age group,they were allotted in a randomized complete block design(2×4 factorial).Two factors were weaning age groups(21 and 25 d of age)and varying whey permeate levels(7.50%,11.25%,15.00%,and 18.75%).Data were analyzed using the GLM and NLIN procedures of SAS for slope-ratio and broken-line analyses to determine the growth response to whey permeate and optimal daily whey permeate intake for the growth of the pigs weaned at different ages.Results:Pigs weaned at 21 d of age had a common diet for 11 d to reach 7 kg BW whereas pigs weaned at 25 d of age needed 2 d.The G:F of pigs weaned at 25 d of age responded to increased daily whey permeate intake greater(P<0.05)than pigs weaned at 21 d of age.Breakpoints were obtained(P<0.05)at 88 and 60 g/d daily whey permeate intake or 17.0%and 14.4%of whey permeate for G:F of pigs weaned at 21 and 25 d of age,respectively.Conclusion:Pigs weaned at an older age with a short early-weaner phase had a greater growth response to whey permeate intake compared with pigs weaned at a younger age with a long early-weaner phase.Altering weaning ages affected dietary needs of whey permeate for optimum growth performance of pigs from 7 to 11 kg BW. 相似文献

Before selection programmes for aquaculture species can commence, a fundamental knowledge of how the culture process affects genetic diversity is requisite. “South Sea” pearl production, through the culture of the silver-lipped pearl oyster, Pinctada maxima, stands to gain substantially from genetic selection. Aquaculture techniques for P. maxima have progressed vastly, to a point where the majority of current operations are based on hatchery-propagated stock; however, there has been no investigation on how the culture process is affecting the genetic diversity of this species. To address this deficiency, we investigated the genetic diversity and effective population sizes (Ne) in three wild and five hatchery-produced P. maxima populations. Using six microsatellite DNA markers, cultured populations exhibited low Ne (3.5–9.2) and reduced allelic richness (29–44%) compared with their wild progenitors. Observed heterozygosities were not affected greatly, however, an increased mean pairwise genetic relatedness was observed in all cultured populations. The practice of mass spawning was identified as a major factor in the reduction of diversity, although diversity was not necessarily maintained when a more controlled spawning approach was utilised. Pedigree reconstructions revealed genetic diversity and Ne is affected by large skews in full-sib family representations (up to 40% from a single family, in a cohort using 28 broodstock), and could be due to differential survival rates amongst communally reared families. In order to maximise future selective breeding efforts, further research should be directed towards identifying critical stages of the culture process in which genetic diversity is lost. 相似文献

The activities of 44 Annonaceous acetogenins, which were originally isolated by monitoring plant fractionations with the brine shrimp lethality test (BST), were evaluated in the yellow fever mosquito larvae microtiter plate (YFM) assay. The results clearly demonstrate that most acetogenins have pesticidal properties. The structure–activity relationships indicate that the compounds bearing adjacent bis-THF (tetrahydrofuran) rings with three hydroxyl groups are the most potent. Bullatacin ( 1 ) and trilobin ( 7 ) gave the best activities against YFM with LC50 values of 0·10 and 0·67 mg litre-1, respectively. Compounds showing LC50 values below 1·0 mg litre-1 in this assay are usually considered significant as new lead candidates for pesticidal development. In the BST, the corresponding LC50 values were 1·6×10-3 ( 1 ) and 9·7×10-3 ( 7 ) mg litre-1. Crop scientists are often interested in canopy rather than leaf water estimates. Comparing canopy fluxes for multiple treatments using micrometeorological approaches presents limitations because of the large fetch required. The goal of this study was to compare leaf-scale to field-scale data by summing soil water evaporation (E) and leaf transpiration (T) versus ET using tower eddy covariance (EC) and scaling leaf transpiration to the canopy level using a two-step scaling approach in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. Soybean transpiration represented 89-96% of E + T when combining the soil water evaporation with leaf transpiration on the five measurement days during reproductive growth. Comparing E + T versus ET from the EC system, the E + T method overestimated ET from 0.68 to 1.58 mm. In terms of percent difference, the best agreement between the two methods was 15% on DOY 235 and the worst agreement occurred on DOY 234 (41%). A two-step scaling method predicted average ET within 0.01 mm of the EC ET between 10:00 and 14:15 on an hourly time-step on DOY 227 under uniform sky conditions and average ET within 0.03 mm of the EC ET on DOY 235 under intermittent sky conditions between 10:00 and 15:15. Pooling the scaled-leaf data and comparing them with the measured EC ET data exhibited a strong linear relationship (r = 0.835) after accounting for bias (6%). Findings from this study indicate satisfactory results comparing absolute differences are likely not obtainable by summing leaf transpiration with soil water evaporation to calculate canopy water fluxes. However, scaling leaf transpiration provided a robust measure of canopy transpiration during reproductive growth in soybean under these conditions and merits additional study under different climatic and crop conditions. 相似文献
