A field experiment was conducted to obtain the N balance sheet for sole crops and intercrops of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] and pigeonpeas [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.]. Intercropping gave a significant advantage over sole cropping in terms of dry matter production and grain yield, as calculated on the basis of the land equivalent ratio and area-time equivalent ratio. The N fertilizer use efficiency and atmospheric N2 fixation by pigeonpea were estimated using 15N-labeling and natural abundance methods. The N fertilizer use efficiency of sorghum was unaltered by the cropping system, while that of the pigeonpea was greatly reduced by intercropping. Although intercropping increased the fractional contribution of fixed N to the pigeonpeas, no significant difference was observed between the cropping systems in total symbiotically fixed N. There was no evidence of a significant transfer of N from the pigeonpea to the sorghum. This study showed that use of soil N and fertilizer N by pigeonpeas was almost the same as that by sorghum in sole cropping, indicating the potential competence of pigeonpeas to exploit soil N. However, when N was exhausted by a companion crop in intercropping, the pigeonpea crop increased its dependency on atmospheric N2 fixation. We conclude that knowledge of how N from different sources is shared by companion crops is a prerequisite to establishing strategies to increase N use, and consequently land productivity, in intercropping systems. 相似文献

Non-target effects of a bacterial (Pseudomonas fluorescens DR54) and a fungal (Clonostachys rosea IK726) microbial control agent (MCA), on the indigenous microbiota in bulk soil and rhizosphere of barley, and subsequent a sugar beet crop, were studied in a greenhouse experiment. MCAs were introduced by seed and soil inoculation. Bulk and rhizosphere soils were sampled regularly during the growth of barley and sugar beet. The soils were assayed for the fate of MCAs and various features of the indigenous soil microbiota. At the end of the experiment (193 d), DR54 and IK726 had declined by a factor of 106 and 20, respectively, and DR54 showed a short-lasting growth increase in the sugar beet rhizosphere. In general, the non-target effects were small and transient. IK726 seemed to have general stimulating effects on soil enzyme activity and the soil microbiota, and resulted in a significant increase in plant dry weight. The plant growth-promoting effect of DR54 was less pronounced and the DR54 displaced indigenous pseudomonads. DR54 stimulated growth of protozoans with a tolerance for the anti-fungal compound viscosinamide produced by DR54. Treatment with the fungicide Fungazil had no effects on plant growth or soil microorganisms. Phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis detected the perturbations of the soil microbial community structure in the MCA treatments as well as the return to non- perturbed conditions reflecting the decline of inoculant populations. The PLFA technique appears to be suitable for in situ monitoring of MCA non-target effects on the soil microbiota, but should be combined with assays for MCA survival and soil enzyme activity. 相似文献

Root traits of six different crops grown on residual soil moisture in the post–rainy season in the High Barind Tract (HBT) of Bangladesh were investigated to better understand their adaptation to this moisture‐limited environment. Deep‐rooting chickpea is the currently favored rainfed crop grown after rainy‐season rice in the HBT, but it is necessary to identify alternative crops to chickpea in order to avoid buildup of pests and diseases. Averaged over 2 y, barley (1.72 Mg ha–1) produced significantly more grain than chickpea (1.4 Mg ha–1) which, in turn, yielded better than linseed (1.0 Mg ha–1), wheat (0.93 Mg ha–1), and mustard (0.77 Mg ha–1). Lentil did not produce any grain at all. Grain yield for all crops increased as total root length increased above a threshold value of 0.05 to 0.1 km m–2. In general, grain yield increased as the proportion of total root produced below 60 cm depth increased, although barley also had thin roots that could more effectively extract soil moisture. Expression of root traits varied considerably between seasons, which was attributable to the different rainfall patterns and bulk‐density characteristics of the soil profile in the 2 years of the study. Although favorable root traits, particularly rooting ability below 60 cm, are a prerequisite for acceptable yield levels of crops grown on residual soil moisture in the HBT, it is recognized that farmers' choice of a post‐rice crop will depend on its economic return or food‐security value. 相似文献

A gravimetric method for the determination of ash was collaboratively studied in 14 laboratories. The food is ashed at 550 degrees C to constant weight and the ash is determined by weighing. Seven samples of various food commodities with estimated ash contents varying between low and high (0.07-8.0 g/100 g) were included in the study. The relative standard deviations for reproducibility varied, ranging from 1.0 and 1.3 for ash contents of 7.2 and 8.0 g/100 g, to 11 +/- 1% for low ash contents of 0.07 and 0.27 g/100 g. 相似文献

Studies of rice-based systems in the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) have demonstrated the beneficial effects of Conservation Agriculture on soil organic carbon (SOC) status, along with increased soil health and crop productivity. However, it remains unclear as to the time for such treatments to have a positive effect. In this study of lentil-mung bean-rice and wheat-mung-rice rotations in Bangladesh positive effects of strip planting or bed planting, along with residue return, on SOC pools were apparent after 1.5 years, compared with intensive conventional tillage and limited residue return. Conventional tillage resulted in higher CO2 emission compared with strip planting or bed planting as did high residue return. In the cereal-dominated rotation, the strip planting system sequestered carbon at a rate of 0.24–0.53 Mg C ha−1 year−1 (at 0–0.15 m depth) while conventional tillage was associated with a carbon loss of 0.52–0.82 Mg C ha−1 year−1. In the legume-dominated rotation, neither practice sequestered SOC. Under strip planting, a minimum annual crop residue input of 1.7 Mg C ha−1 for the cereal-dominated system and 5.2 Mg C ha−1 for the legume-dominated system was required to maintain SOC at equilibrium. We conclude that strip planting with high levels of crop residue return can be an effective and quick strategy in either slowing the loss of SOC or improving C sequestration in the intensive rice-based systems of the Eastern IGP. 相似文献

Abiotic and biotic factors influencing distribution of microbiotic crusts within hot deserts, such as the Mojave and Colorado Deserts, are poorly known. Our objective was to examine microbiotic crust distribution with reference to soil and parent material characteristics as well as plant functional groups in wilderness areas of Joshua Tree National Park (JTNP). A total of 75 sites were visually assessed for crust abundance and plant community composition; soil physical and chemical factors also were measured. Microbiotic crusts of JTNP, in particular lichen and moss crusts, were not as well-developed or as widely distributed as in other arid regions of North America. Algal crusts were most prevalent, lichen crusts were sparse, and crusts containing mosses were rare, with average percent land surface absolute (and relative) cover for these three cover categories being 11.4% (17.4%), 1.7% (2.7%), and 0.02% (0.02%), respectively. Previously reported individual drivers of crust development, such as pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and soil texture, did not appear to strongly influence crust development in this study of the Mojave and Colorado Deserts. Proximity to granitic bedrock and grusy granitic soils associated with it were the key determinants of microbiotic crust distribution in the wilderness areas of JTNP. In particular, crusts were best developed in grusy granitic soils. Overall, our study emphasized the importance of geology in driving crust distribution and its potential value as a predictor of where crusts may occur in the hot deserts of North America. 相似文献

Abstract Cucumbers were grown in nutrient film systems with (A) recirculation of solution and (B) membrane filtration and recirculation of solution. Samples of the nutrient solutions were taken during May-August. Nutrient solution in circulation without membrane filtration contained on average 23 ppm TOC (total organic carbon), while the filtered nutrient solution contained 15 ppm TOC. Spectrophotometric analysis of the samples showed a clear correlation of absorbance at 295 nm with TOC. The spectrometric data are compatible with tannin- and lignin-like material as the main organic residues in the nutrient solution. Membrane-filtered nutrient solutions were rapidly reinfected with bacteria, and filtered and non-filtered nutrient solutions flowing to the plants did not differ with regard to the number of bacteria. 相似文献

Tissue (fillet, viscera and carcass) distributions of fat were examined in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. (≈740→≈1400→≈2000 g) to test the hypothesis that the fillet becomes increasingly important as a fat depot when fish increase in size. The salmon were fed for 11 weeks on either a high‐fat feed (H: ≈39% fat) or a low‐fat feed (L: ≈28% fat), and half of the fish were then subjected to a dietary switch to create four feed treatments (HH, HL, LL and LH). Fillet fat concentration increased with the passage of time, and the fillet also represented an increasing percentage of the body mass (≈48.5→≈55→≈58.5%) as the fish increased in size. As a consequence, the fillet became increasingly important as a fat depot, containing ≈30% of the body fat in the small fish at the start of the experiment, and ≈50% in the fish sampled at the end of the trial. The proportion of fat localised in the viscera was little influenced by either fish size or feeding treatment, and was within the range of 19–25%, whereas the carcass held a decreasing percentage of the body fat stores as fish size increased. There was a highly significant negative correlation between the percentages of body fat found within the carcass (C) and fillet (F): F = 73.589–0.9285C (R2 = 0.973; n = 13). Although the fillet became more important as a fat depot as fish increased in size, the percentage of the body fat reserves found within this tissue appeared to plateau at 50–55%. 相似文献

Pulsating hemolymph pressures of remarkable magnitude for invertebrates are prevalent in the Pacific gooseneck barnacle. Mean pressures of 250 centimeters of water are common with pulse pressures up to 70 centimeters of water. The pulsations are distinctly rhythmical and the pulsation rate is highly temperature-dependent. The results strongly suggest that in cirripeds hemolymph is circulated by muscular contractions of a functional heart. 相似文献
