Computer-simulation models of infections can easily incorporate heterogeneity among animals (important for the effect of control measures) by allocating animals to various classes. These classes are termed ‘states’ and the change from one state to another, during a unit of time, is termed a ‘transition’. Hence, most computer models are state-transition models. Using a fairly universal representation state-transition models, we derived an analytic expression (a formula) for the basic reproduction ratio of infection (R0), i.e. the number of cases caused by one typical infectious animal. When R0>1, the infection can spread; when R0<1, the infection will disappear. Therefore, a strategy for controlling an infective agent is effective when, and only when, the ratio for that strategy is less than one.
Using the reproduction-ratio formula derived in this paper (instead of interpreting results from a large number of simulations) has several advantages for veterinary researchers. The structure of the formula allows investigators to understand how certain parameters (e.g. infection, demographic or control-strategy parameters), if changed, will influence the ratio. Moreover, the ratio can be calculated directly and quickly, hence whether an infection will spread or disappear can be determined quickly. In addition, because certain parameters present in the original model disappear in the formula for the ratio, they can be eliminated as influencing the effectiveness of the control strategy. Finally, the value of R0 can be interpolated for parameter values (e.g. rates of infection, contact rates, replacement rates and herd sizes) other than those evaluated originally.
In two groups of swine herds, herds with and without clinical AR the presence of Atrophic Rhinitis (AR) correlated with the presence of toxinogenic Pasteurella multocida (PM) and not with the Bordetella bronchiseptica (BB) infection. Six BB- and eighteen PM-strains have been investigated for AR pathogenicity. Broth cultures were injected intradermally in guinea-pigs (GPST) or intranasally in 3-week-old colostrum deprived specific pathogen free (SPF) piglets. The average atrophy of the ventral conchae (AVC) correlated with the GPST in 4 BB-and 7 PM-strains. One BB- and 2 PM-strains were qualified as doubtful, the others as non-AR pathogenic. With AR pathogenic BB-and PM-strains clinical AR could be induced in 3-and 6-week-old piglets. AVC lesions (gradation greater than 1) could be induced with BB in piglets of 6 and with pathogenic PM in 16-week-old piglets. Six of seven AR pathogenic PM-strains resembled Carter-type D and one resembled type A. No significance was found between AR pathogenicity and somatic serotypes. Intranasal instillations of cell-free broth culture filtrates of AR pathogenic PM-strains also caused AR in piglets. These filtrates also caused lethality in piglets and in mice lethalitytest (MLT) and induced a positive GPST. After heating the pathogenic effects of the filtrates disappeared. The name AR toxin has been introduced for this thermolabile, haemorrhagic dermonecrotic (HDNT) fraction of the AR inducing filtrates. The severity of the AR lesions depended on the amount of the AR toxin intranasally instilled in pigs. Cross protecting antibodies obtained in rabbits against the AR toxins of two PM strains could be demonstrated by a toxin neutralisation test in the MLT and the GPST. Broth cultures were injected intradermally in guinea-pigs (GPST) or intranasally in 3-week-old colostrum deprived specific pathogen free (SPF) piglets.
Summary To study the response and economics of nematode control in cattle, trials with anthelmintics were carried out in the wet season at New Zealand farm in the highlands of Sri Lanka. Three age groups were used: stall fed yearlings, grazing heifers and lactating cows. Groups were treated with ivermectin or febantel and monitored along with control groups for faecal egg counts, growth and milk production.Treatment reduced the trichostrongylid faecal egg counts in yearlings, heifers and cows for six to 10 weeks, for more than 10 weeks and for 140 days respectively. The growth rate of treated yearlings did not increase significantly while treated heifers did grow significantly faster. Treated cows produced an average of 115 kg more milk over 133 days (P<0.05). The economic gains in reducing the age at first service and in terms of milk yield far outweighed the cost of anthelmintics used.
Influence Des Nematodes Gastro-Intestinaux Sur La Productivite Du Betail Laitier Dans Les Hautes Terres Humides De Ski Lanka
This study was performed to produce transgenic Korean native goat (Capra hircus) by laparoscopic embryo transfer (ET) to overcome the limitations of ET performed by laparotomy. Transgenic embryos were produced by DNA pronuclear microinjection of in vivo zygotes. The recipient goats were synchronized for estrus by using an introvaginal progesterone devices as a controlled internal drug-releasing insert (CIDR) for 13 days and injection of 400 IU PMSG 48 h before removal of the insert. Embryos were transferred on day 3 and 4 after removal of the insert. Recipient goats were deprived of feed for 48 h, then suspended in a laparotomy cradle at an angle of 45°. After obtaining a sufficient pneumoperitoneum, the laparoscope and forceps were inserted abdominally through 5 mm trocar sleeves. Examination of the ovaries and uterus was performed and then 213 embryos were transferred into the oviducts via the infundibula of 76 recipient goats. To compare pregnancy rates, ET was also performed by laparotomy in 82 recipient goats. The pregnancies in the recipient goats were diagnosed by ultrasound on day 30 after embryo transfer. The pregnancy rate with laparoscopic ET was significantly higher than with ET performed by laparotomy (46.1% vs. 28.6%, p < 0.05). In addition, the pregnancy rates were compared between ovulated and non-ovulated ovaries of the recipient goats in the laparoscopic ET group. No significant difference was observed between the pregnancy rates of ovulated and non-ovulated ovaries (41.3% vs. 33.3%, p < 0.05) suggesting that ET may also be possible in non-ovulated recipients through artificial rupture of Graafian follicles. These results suggest that laparoscopic ET is a highly efficient method for the transfer of goat embryos.
Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of reducing dietary crude protein on growth performance, odor gas emission from manure and blood urea nitrogen and IGF-1 concentrations of serum in nursery pigs. In experiment 1, the dietary treatments were (i) CON (CP 19.5%) and (ii) T1 (CP 16.0%). In feces samples, NH3, H2S, acetic acid and butyric acid emissions during the T1 treatment were lower than during the CON treatment ( P < 0.05). In feces-urine samples, NH3 emission during the T1 treatment was lower than during the CON treatment ( P < 0.05). In experiment 2, 28 crossbred (Landrace × Yorkshire × Duroc) pigs (13.58 ± 0.10 kg) were used for a 42-day growth trial. Throughout the entire experimental period, ADG and ADFI of the CON treatment were higher than the T1 treatment ( P < 0.05). On day 14, N digestibility in pigs fed the CON diet was higher than that of pigs fed the T1 diet ( P < 0.05). On days 28 and 42, DM digestibility of the CON diet was greater than the T1 treatment ( P < 0.05). On dat 42, serum BUN concentration of pigs fed the CON diet was higher than that of pigs fed the T1 diet ( P < 0.05). In conclusion, these results indicate that reduction in dietary CP concentration decreased NH3, H2S and VFA emissions in feces and growth performance in nursery pigs.
Most reports on indigenous agroforestry systems of the Amazon region have described patterns employed by tribal groups almost exclusively for their own subsistence. This article discusses a market-oriented cyclic agroforestry system practiced by non-tribal Mestizo farmers in Tamshiyacu, Peru. The system produces charcoal, as well as annual, semi-perennial, and perennial crops for local consumption, and for a regional market. The sale of these products provides a substantial cash income for many farmers. The data presented demonstrate that Amazonian cyclic agroforestry systems are capable of being commercially successful enterprises and of serving as possible models for further agricultural development.
