Cadmium (Cd) is a well‐known toxicant targeting many organs, among them placenta. This heavy metal also has embryonary and foetal toxicity. This study was undertaken to analyse the effect of a single Cd dose administered at 4, 7, 10 or 15 days of gestation on the offspring of pregnant rats sacrificed at 20 days of gestation. Cadmium chloride was administered subcutaneously at 10 mg/kg body weight to Wistar pregnant dams; control animals received a proportionate volume of sterile normal saline by the same route. Maternal uteri, livers, kidneys and lungs, and foetuses were examined at necropsy. Samples of maternal organs and whole foetuses were collected for histopathologic examination, determination of Cd levels and staining by the Alizarin red S technique. Results revealed a clear embryotoxic and a teratogenic effect of this heavy metal, the former as a significant increase in the number of resorptions, and the latter as significant decrease of the gestational sac weight, and the size and weight of foetuses of Cd‐treated dams as well as induced malformations in skull bones, vertebrae and thoracic, and pelvian limbs. The deleterious effects found were similar to those previously reported for other animal models suggesting a high conservation of the pathogenic mechanisms of Cd. Additionally, many of the addressed aspects showed a slight dependence on the time of administration of the toxic that might be due to the accumulation of the metal in different organs, as we were able to demonstrate by the analysis of its concentration.  相似文献

The Indian Council of Agricultural research has given priority to control and manage salinity problems that have developed in north-west India. Multi-disciplinary taskforces have recommended installation of subsurface drainage for salinity control, based on design and management techniques developed by the Central Soil Salinity Research Institute (CSSRI), to rehabilitate lands with excess soil salinity. After small-scale studies, large-scale pilot projects were launched to install subsurface drainage in problem areas. One such attempt in was initiated in the north-west region of India where a large-scale drainage project was carried out with Dutch collaboration. We assessed the impact of investments in subsurface drainage in order to validate past funding on research of drainage in India. The important methods used for assessing the efficiency benefits of drainage investment were: to determine the impact of subsurface drainage in terms of net present value, internal rate of returns, consumers' surplus and producers' surplus; to assess the social welfare in terms of social equality and sustainability of the drainage system; and to examine the factors affecting the sustainability of the technology. The internal rate of return was computed to assess the efficiency parameter of subsurface drainage for salinity management. In order to measure the changes in inequality distribution of income, Gini concentration ratios were computed with and without installing sub surface drainage. The Radar Approach, a method based on a graphical display of differences between actual ideal performance, was used to quantify drainage sustainability in terms of optimizing gains and conserving, or improving the quality of soil and water resources. There were several farm-level benefits as a result of installing subsurface drainage: these included: (i) a substantial increase in farm income; (ii) cropping intensification and diversification toward high value crops; and (iii) generation employment. A high internal rate of return justified investment in subsurface drainage. Income inequalities across farms were reduced. The radar approach showed improvement in sustainability in terms of economic gains and resource conservation. Despite of these economic, social, and environmental benefits, the sustainability of subsurface drainage technology is questionable. The specific reasons include: (i) the nature of the technology; (ii) lukewarm collective action by the beneficiaries; (iii) conflicting objectives among beneficiaries; and (iv) growing numbers of free riders. To a large extent these were addressed in the study area by forming village committees. Without appropriate institutional arrangements, subsurface drainage may not yield the desired results, and in the long run may result in neglect of operation and maintenance needs and ultimately the abandonment of the technology.  相似文献

Summary The rates of CO2 efflux were measured by an alkali absorption method (using 20 ml 0.5 N NaOH) from soils in four undisturbed sites [two evergreen oak forests, Quercus floribunda Lindl. (tilonj oak), Quercus leucotrichophora A Camus (banj oak), and two evergreen conifer forests, Cedrus deodara Loud. (deodar forest) and Pinus roxburghii Sarg. (chir pine forest)] and three disturbed sites. The sites were located between elevations of 1850 and 2360 m in the Central Himalaya. The seasonal pattern of soil respiration was similar in all the sites with a maximum during the rainy season, intermediate rates during the summer season and the lowest level of activity in winter. The rate of CO2 efflux was higher in broadleaf than in conifer forests, and it was lowest in the disturbed sites. Among the edaphic conditions, soil moisture, N, organic C, pH, soil porosity, and root biomass positively affected total soil respiration. The proportion of root respiration to total soil respiration was higher in the disturbed sites than the undisturbed sites in winter. Conditions in the winter season were less favourable for microbial respiration than for root respiration.  相似文献

Helminthosporium leaf blight (HLB) is the most important disease constraint to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivation in the eastern Gangetic Plains of South Asia. A Helminthosporium Monitoring Nursery (HMN) including potential adapted and exotic sources of HLB resistance was developed in Bangladesh, India and Nepal to assess the stability of genetic resistance across locations. The 8th, 9th and 10th HMN assessed the HLB resistance and agronomic traits of 17 wheat genotypes across 20 environments of Bangladesh, India and Nepal in the 1999‐2000, 2000‐2001 and 2001‐2002 cropping seasons, respectively. The area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) for HLB, grain yield, thousand‐kernel weight (TKW), days to heading, days to maturity, and plant height were examined. The 17 genotypes showed a range of variability for disease and agronomic characters. Disease severity (AUDPC) differed in the 3 years and showed the highest values in 2002. The increase in AUDPC in 2002 caused the lowest grain yield, with an average 18% reduction due to HLB. A few genotypes (SW 89‐5422, Yangmai‐6 and Ning 8201) appeared to have stable HLB resistance across environments. However, most of the higher‐yielding genotypes, except BL 1883, were unstable. The results suggest that careful selection of HLB resistance with acceptable grain yield, TKW and plant height may be possible using the wheat genotypes included in the HMN.  相似文献

Investigations on interspecific crossability in two species of the genus Citrullus were studied based on their morphology, chromosome pairing and pollen fertility in their hybrids resulting from 12 combinations(including reciprocals). These have been utilized for tracing the phylogenetic relationship between the taxa and factors responsible for their differentiation. A collective evaluation of data on cross compatibility,morphology, chromosome association and pollen fertility indicated a close phylogenetic relationship between the species C. colocynthis (wild2n = 22) and C. vulgaris (cultivated 2n = 22). Significant differences for crossability and pollen fertility were observed between hybrids of C. colocynthis × C. vulgaris and reciprocals. Meiotic analysis of F1 hybrids revealed that these two species are freely crossable and provide normal chromosome association, involving an average of 9 to maximum 11 pairs of chromosomes. This indicated the possibility of high recombination and thereby genetic introgression of desirable traits. As both the species are of economic significance, breeding strategies can be developed for the genetic improvement of these species. Three F1 progenies and their families in the segregating generations (F3, F4, F5 and F6), obtained after crossing resistant × susceptible wheat genotypes were studied in the field to determine the genetics of resistance to spot blotch caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana. Spot blotch scores in the F1 generation showed absence of dominance. Individually threshed F2 plants were used to advance the generations. Progenies (200‐250) of resistant genotypes Acc. No. 8226, Mon/Ald, Suzhoe#8 crossed with susceptible ‘Sonalika’ were evaluated in the F3, F4, F5 and F6 generations under induced epiphytotic conditions. Based on disease score distribution in individual progeny rows, F3 progenies were grouped into four classes: homozygous resistant, homozygous susceptible, segregating resistant and segregating susceptible. Resistance appeared to be under the control of three additive genes. The presence of three genes was also noted in the distribution of F4 and F5 lines. In the case of F6 progeny rows, both quantitative and qualitative models were used to estimate the number of segregating genes based on a 2‐year trial. It appeared that resistance to spot blotch was controlled by the additive interaction of more than two genes, possibly only three.  相似文献

Leaf rust resistance genes were identified in the common wheat variety ‘HUW 206’ and line HUWL 39 by inoculating their seedlings with 20 pathotypes of diverse avirulence–virulence combinations. The inheritance patterns and allelic relationships were studied by crossing these wheats with ‘Agra Local1 and a set of Thacher’ near-isogenic lines with genes for resistance. Seedling resistance studies revealed the presence of genes Lr1, Lr10 and Lr26 in ‘HUW 206’ and genes Lr10 and Lr26 in HUWL 39. The presence of genes Lr1 and Lr10 was confirmed indirectly by testing for the linked genes Sr31 and Yr9. An F1 test for progressive necrosis in crosses of the lines with ‘Spica’ revealed the absence of Lr13.  相似文献

Inheritance of downy mildew [Sclerospora graminicola (Sacc.) Schrot]resistance was studied using generation mean analysis in pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R.Br.]. Eleven basic generations, namely, P1, P2, F1, F2, B1, B2, B1F2, B2F2, L1, L2 and L3 of three crosses involving six diverse lines for downy mildew incidence were evaluated under artificial epiphytotic conditions over two environments. The downy mildew incidence was best fitting for digenic, trigenic and tetragenic ratios when fitted into classical Mendelian ratios demonstrating involvement of two or more genes. Digenic and trigenic interaction models were adequate in the case of crosses I and III respectively, to account for the total variability in generation means. Unlike severity, comparative estimates of gene effects over two environments were mostly consistent in all crosses for prevalence. Most of the epistatic and major gene effects were found significant in all crosses for both the disease traits. Non-allelic interactions particularly at three-gene loci viz., w (additive × additive × additive) and y (additive × dominance × dominance) in cross II and all trigenic interactions in cross III were predominant. Duplicate dominance (cross I) and complementary epistasis (crosses II and III) were observed for both the traits revealing inconsistency of gene effects over crosses. The gd1 (interaction of additive gene effect with e1) and gh1(interaction of dominant gene effect with e1) were significant in crosses I and II, indicating interaction of additive and dominance gene effects with environments. Thus a breeding method that can mop up the resistant genes to form superior gene constellations interacting in a favorable manner against pathotype I would be more suitable to accelerate the pace of resistance improvement. Seedlings of three hybrids and their parental lines were analyzed for growth, and peroxidase as well as IAA oxidase activities in cytoplasmic and salt-extracted ionically bound fractions with a view to evaluate heterosis in pearl millet. The hybrid vigour was manifested in roots and shoots of all the three hybrids clearly for growth and activities of peroxidase and IAA oxidase except the wall-bound IAA oxidase. Either better parental or mid-parental heterosis was discernible. The role of peroxidase and IAA oxidase systems in meristematic activity and removal of excessive auxin levels to bring about maximal growth response in the hybrids is discussed.  相似文献
