Advances in the deposition process have led to dramatic improvements in the electronic properties of polycrystalline diamond films produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). It is now possible to produce CVD diamond with properties approaching those of IIa natural diamonds. The combined electron-hole mobility, as measured by transient photoconductivity at low carrier density, is 4000 square centimeters per volt per second at an electric field of 200 volts per centimeter and is comparable to that of the best single-crystal IIa natural diamonds. Carrier lifetimes measured under the same conditions are 150 picoseconds for the CVD diamond and 300 picoseconds for single-crystal diamond. The collection distance at a field of 10 kilovolts per centimeter is 15 micrometers for the CVD diamond as compared to 30 micrometers for natural diamonds. The electrical qualities appear to correlate with the width of the diamond Raman peak. Also, although the collection distance at the highest fields in the films nearly equals the average grain size, there is no evidence of deleterious grain boundary effects.  相似文献

Increased root exudation and a related stimulation of rhizosphere-microbial growth have been hypothesised as possible explanations for a lower nitrogen- (N-) nutritional status of plants grown under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations, due to enhanced plant-microbial N competition in the rhizosphere. Leguminous plants may be able to counterbalance the enhanced N requirement by increased symbiotic N2 fixation. Only limited information is available about the factors determining the stimulation of symbiotic N2 fixation in response to elevated CO2.In this study, short-term effects of elevated CO2 on quality and quantity of root exudation, and on carbon supply to the nodules were assessed in Phaseolus vulgaris, grown in soil culture with limited (30 mg N kg−1 soil) and sufficient N supply (200 mg N kg−1 soil), at ambient (400 μmol mol−1) and elevated (800 μmol mol−1) atmospheric CO2 concentrations.Elevated CO2 reduced N tissue concentrations in both N treatments, accelerated the expression of N deficiency symptoms in the N-limited variant, but did not affect plant biomass production. 14CO2 pulse-chase labelling revealed no indication for a general increase in root exudation with subsequent stimulation of rhizosphere microbial growth, resulting in increased N-competition in the rhizosphere at elevated CO2. However, a CO2-induced stimulation in root exudation of sugars and malate as a chemo-attractant for rhizobia was detected in 0.5-1.5 cm apical root zones as potential infection sites. Particularly in nodules, elevated CO2 increased the accumulation of malate as a major carbon source for the microsymbiont and of malonate with essential functions for nodule development. Nodule number, biomass and the proportion of leghaemoglobin-producing nodules were also enhanced. The release of nod-gene-inducing flavonoids (genistein, daidzein and coumestrol) was stimulated under elevated CO2, independent of the N supply, and was already detectable at early stages of seedling development at 6 days after sowing.  相似文献

SUMMARY Mean concentration of cadmium (Cd) in kidneys of hogget sheep from 67 flocks grazing in the Agricultural Region of Western Australia was tested for association with soil, pastoral, climatic and nutritional factors. Hoggets grazing pastures on acidic soils and soils with a sandy-textured surface had higher Cd concentrations in kidneys than hoggets grazing pastures on more alkaline soils or soils with a clay-textured surface. Application of more than 100 kg of phosphatic fertiliser during the past 3 years to loamy soils was also associated with greater Cd concentration in kidneys of the grazing animals.  相似文献

Summary

The effect of 60 minutes’ intravenous infusions, before morning feeding, of ammonium acetate (18.6 micromole/min/kg of body weight) and ammonium acetate with propranolol (11 μg/min/kg of body weight) on the ruminal motility of sheep was examined. Ammonia has an adrenaline‐like action therefore propranolol, a beta‐receptor blocking agent, was administered in order to eliminate the possible effect of adrenaline on ruminal motility. The contractions of the dorsal sack of the rumen were registered by means of the balloon method, with the gauge inserted through the rumen fistula. The infusion of ammonium acetate caused an increase of the ammonia concentration in the blood to 0.6 mmolel/at the end of 60 minutes’ infusion. Already during the first 5 minutes of the intravenous infusion of ammonium acetate there was a decreased frequency of ruminal contractions, which was observed throughout the infusion. After the infusion there was a radical decrease of the concentration of ammonia in the blood, and at the same time an increase in the frequency of rumen contraction was observed.

Blocking of the beta‐adrenergic receptors by propranolol did not eliminate the inhibiting action of ammonium ion on rumen motility. The infusion of the ammonium acetate caused an increase of adrenaline and glucose concentration. This response was eliminated by propranolol in the case of adrenaline but not glucose. It is assumed that the action of ammonium ion on the rumen motility is derived primarily by the central nervous system.  相似文献

Based on the scarcity of reports in veterinary medicine literature, it appears that Arcanobacterium spp. are rarely isolated from horses. Recently, a single isolate from vaginal discharge in a mare was characterized as a new species, Arcanobacterium hippocoleae. The present report describes a case of necrosuppurative placentitis and stillbirth in an American Quarterhorse mare. Numerous colonies of irregular, Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria were observed by histological examination within fibrin lattice associated with placental lesions. Arcanobacterium hippocoleae was isolated in large numbers from the placenta, lung, and stomach contents. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of placentitis associated with Arcanobacterium spp. in a horse and the third reported isolation of A. hippocoleae from a horse.  相似文献

Early developmental stages of fish mostly depend on innate immune factors for their protection. Augmenting these factors by application of different immunostimulatory substances may be beneficial for rearing and survival of the early life stages of fish. Bath administration of stimulants leads to a uniform exposure of fish independent of feed intake and reduces the individual handling. The present study demonstrates the immunostimulatory effect of β‐glucan (bath exposure) in rainbow trout fry at different dosages and exposure time. Rainbow trout fry (avg. wt. 770 mg; 87 days post hatch) were exposed to three different concentrations of β‐glucan (10, 100 and 1000 μg mL?1) by bath exposure for 1 and 24 h. Expression of immune related genes from pooled internal organ samples of individual fish were analysed using a real time qPCR assay. Expression of complement factors (C3 and factor B) and acute phase proteins (hepcidin, precerebellin and transferrin) was significantly up‐regulated after 24 h bath stimulation with β‐glucan (100 μg mL?1). These innate immune factors may play a vital role in clearance of pathogens. The expression of most of genes showed both a dose‐ and time‐dependent response. A medium dose (100 μg mL?1) induced a significant increase in expression of complement factors and acute phase proteins mainly at 24 h exposure, whereas the highest dose of β‐glucan (1000 μg mL?1) down‐regulated the expression of most of the studied genes. The result from the present study indicates that β‐glucan bath exposure could be applied for enhancing the innate immune factors even in fry.  相似文献

A storage experiment was aimed at preventing low temperature storage disorders in nectarine fruits, of cvs July Red and Autumn Grand. Fruit was either cooled immediately after harvest or kept at 20°C for 48 h, before transfer to controlled atmosphere (CA) conditions at 0°C. Combinations of 0, 10, 15 and 20% C02 with 8 and 16% 02 were assayed. The fruit was evaluated following cold storage, 31 days after harvest, and after four and eight days under ‘shelf conditions’ (ripening at 15-18 °C). Warming of the fruit at 20°C before cold storage prevented woolliness in the absence of elevated C02 levels but did not affect internal browning and increased reddish discoloration; further, it enhanced water loss and ripening, increasing fruit softening markedly. Conversely, high C02 delayed fruit ripening in CA storage, keeping the fruit firmer, and preventing the development of woolliness, internal browning and reddish discoloration during ripening, the best results being mostly obtained with 20% C02. 02 levels assayed did not show clear effects, but decreased 02 concentration in absence of high C02 showed some benefit in ‘July Red’. No deleterious effect of C02 concentrations even as high as 20% could be detected. Thus, even though high C02 in CA conditions showed promise for controlling disorders and preventing over-ripening, further work is needed on other cultivars, and lower 02 concentrations should be investigated before making a general recommendation.  相似文献
