Manifold changes in the freshwater cycle of high-latitude lands and oceans have been reported in the past few years. A synthesis of these changes in freshwater sources and in ocean freshwater storage illustrates the complementary and synoptic temporal pattern and magnitude of these changes over the past 50 years. Increasing river discharge anomalies and excess net precipitation on the ocean contributed approximately 20,000 cubic kilometers of fresh water to the Arctic and high-latitude North Atlantic oceans from lows in the 1960s to highs in the 1990s. Sea ice attrition provided another approximately 15,000 cubic kilometers, and glacial melt added approximately 2000 cubic kilometers. The sum of anomalous inputs from these freshwater sources matched the amount and rate at which fresh water accumulated in the North Atlantic during much of the period from 1965 through 1995. The changes in freshwater inputs and ocean storage occurred in conjunction with the amplifying North Atlantic Oscillation and rising air temperatures. Fresh water may now be accumulating in the Arctic Ocean and will likely be exported southward if and when the North Atlantic Oscillation enters into a new high phase. 相似文献

The occurrence and nature of acetate groups in the milled wood lignin (MWL) isolated from birch (Betula pendula Roth) has been addressed by spectroscopic (2D-NMR) and chemical degradative (derivatization followed by reductive cleavage, DFRC) methods. Considerable amounts of acetate groups were present in the MWL preparation. However, 2D-NMR analysis indicated that the lignin polymer is not extensively acetylated and that the major part of the acetate groups is attached to the xylan moieties present in the MWL preparation. Nevertheless, evidence of the presence of minor acetylation of the γ-carbon of the lignin side chain (<3% of both syringyl and guaiacyl lignin units) was provided by DFRC analysis. 相似文献

The maximum light use efficiency (LUE?=?gross primary production (GPP)/absorbed photosynthetic photon flux density (aPPFD)) of plant canopies has been reported to vary spatially and some of this variation has previously been attributed to plant species differences. The canopy nitrogen concentration [N] can potentially explain some of this spatial variation. However, the current paradigm of the N-effect on photosynthesis is largely based on the relationship between photosynthetic capacity (A(max)) and [N], i.e., the effects of [N] on photosynthesis rates appear under high PPFD. A maximum LUE-[N] relationship, if it existed, would influence photosynthesis in the whole range of PPFD. We estimated maximum LUE for 14 eddy-covariance forest sites, examined its [N] dependency and investigated how the [N]-maximum LUE dependency could be incorporated into a GPP model. In the model, maximum LUE corresponds to LUE under optimal environmental conditions before light saturation takes place (the slope of GPP vs. PPFD under low PPFD). Maximum LUE was higher in deciduous/mixed than in coniferous sites, and correlated significantly with canopy mean [N]. Correlations between maximum LUE and canopy [N] existed regardless of daily PPFD, although we expected the correlation to disappear under low PPFD when LUE was also highest. Despite these correlations, including [N] in the model of GPP only marginally decreased the root mean squared error. Our results suggest that maximum LUE correlates linearly with canopy [N], but that a larger body of data is required before we can include this relationship into a GPP model. Gross primary production will therefore positively correlate with [N] already at low PPFD, and not only at high PPFD as is suggested by the prevailing paradigm of leaf-level A(max)-[N] relationships. Cytokines have been associated with the progression of congestive heart failure (CHF) in humans and may be implicated in the pathophysiology of myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) in dogs. The aim of this study was to determine the serum concentrations of cytokines in dogs with MMVD. The study included 16 Cairn terriers with no or minimal mitral regurgitation (MR), 41 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS) with different degrees of MR and 11 dogs of different breeds with CHF due to MMVD. Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, interferon-γ, interleukin (IL)-2, IL-6, IL-7, IL-8, IL-10, IL-15, IL-18, keratinocyte-derived chemokine, interferon-γ-induced protein and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) were measured using a canine-specific multiplex immunoassay. CHF dogs had significantly higher MCP-1 concentrations than dogs with no or minimal MR. Among the CKCS, IL-2 and IL-7 decreased with increasing left atrial size and IL-7 also decreased with increasing MR. IL-8 decreased with increasing left ventricular end-systolic internal dimensions. MCP-1 was increased in CHF dogs compared to healthy control dogs and IL-2, IL-7 and IL-8 decreased with increasing indices of disease severity. The objective of this study was to evaluate luteinizing hormone (LH) and luteal progesterone (P4) secretion in systemic blood and blood near the ovaries in Mangalica (M) and Landrace (L) gilts by implanting catheters into the Vena jugularis and the Vena cava caudalis via the Vena saphena, respectively. Furthermore, leptin was analyzed in jugular vein blood. Blood was collected twice daily from day 7 to day 19 of the oestrous cycle and frequently (10-min intervals for 6 h) on day 9, day 12 and day 15 in M (n=3) and L gilts (n=4). L gilts had congruent pulsatile LH secretion in both veins, but the LH concentrations in M were always below the assay sensitivity during the luteal phase. In both breeds, episodic P4 secretion was found in the jugular and caval veins, and both sampling site and breed had an influence on P4 secretion (P<0.05). The mean concentration of P4 was higher (P<0.01) in utero-ovarian blood (75.8+/-5.3 in M; 49.6+/-4.2 ng/ml in L) than in the periphery (31.3+/-2.0 in M; 21.2+/-1.8 ng/ml in L). M pigs had a lower number of corpora lutea (9.7+/-2.3 vs. 20.5+/-4.4), and analysis of the P4 secretion ratio per corpus luteum revealed an influence of breed (P<0.01). This ratio was significantly higher in M (3.8+/-0.3 and 8.7+/-0.7 ng/ml) compared with the L gilts (1.4+/-0.1 and 2.8+/-0.3 ng/ml) in the jugular and caval veins, respectively. Blood sampling from the Vena cava caudalis is potentially more precise than from the Vena jugularis for evaluation of ovarian P4 secretion. Both the higher P4 concentration and increased leptin secretion (11.3+/-0.6 vs. 3.0+/-0.1 ng/ml, P<0.05) and consequently the altered LH secretion pattern in the Mangalica may contribute to the lower fecundity of this breed. 相似文献

Context
Winter soundscapes are likely different from soundscapes in other seasons considering wildlife vocalizations (biophony) decrease, wind events (geophony) increase, and winter vehicle noise (technophony) occurs. The temporal variation and spatial relationships of soundscape components to the landscape in winter have not been quantified and described until now.Objectives
Our objectives were to determine the temporal and spatial variation and acoustic–environmental relationships of a winter soundscape in south-central Alaska.Methods
We recorded ambient sounds at 62 locations throughout Kenai National Wildlife Refuge (December 2011–April 2012). We calculated the normalized power spectral density in 59,597 recordings and used machine learning to determine acoustic–environmental relationships and produce spatial models of soundscape components.Results
Geophony was the most prevalent component (84 %) followed by technophony (15 %), and biophony (1 %). Geophony occurred primarily at night, varied little by month, and was strongly associated with lakes. Technophony and biophony had similar temporal variation, peaking in April. Technophony occurred closer to urban areas and at locations with high snowmobile activity. Biophony occurred closer to rivers and was inversely related to snowmobile activity. Over 75 % of sample sites had >1 recordings of airplane or snowmobile noise, mainly in remote areas.Conclusions
The soundscape displayed distinct patterns across 24-h and monthly timeframes. These patterns were strongly associated with land cover variables which demonstrate discrete acoustic–environmental relationships exhibiting distinct spatial patterns in the landscape. Despite the predominance of geophony, the presence of technophony in this winter soundscape may have significant negative effects to wildlife and wilderness quality.50.

The genetic basis of resistance to powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis DC. f.sp. hordei Marchal) was analyzed using doubled
haploid barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) lines from the cross Harrington/TR306. Based on infection types observed after inoculation
with defined single-conidium isolates, the lines were classified into four groups. The observed phenotypic ratio fit a two-locus
model. The two putative loci were mapped relative to molecular markers. One coincided with the previously mapped dMlg locus
on chromosome 4. Based on the observed infection types, Harrington carries the Mlg resistance allele, and TR306 carries a
second locus on chromosome 7 (5H); this was tentatively designated Ml(TR). It is the first reported race-specific powdery
mildew resistance gene located on that chromosome. These two loci were also detected by simple interval mapping of disease
severity data from naturally infected field plots. Composite interval mapping with the first two resistance loci as co-factors
detected an additional locus on chromosome 6, with a minor effect on resistance. Finally, superimposing the race-specific
classification onto the field data provided evidence for a minor-effect locus on chromosome 7 (5H). The Mlg locus had the
largest effect, the Ml(TR) locus had an intermediate effect and the other two loci had very small effects. This study demonstrates
the effectiveness of an integrated approach to identifying and mapping resistance loci using classification data from inoculated
experiments and quantitative data from field experiments.
