Climate change has created the need for new strategies in conservation planning that account for the dynamics of factors threatening endangered species.Here we assessed climate change threat to the European otter, a flagship species for freshwater ecosystems, considering how current conservation areas will perform in preserving the species in a climatically changed future. We used an ensemble forecasting approach considering six modelling techniques applied to eleven subsets of otter occurrences across Europe. We performed a pseudo-independent and an internal evaluation of predictions. Future projections of species distribution were made considering the A2 and B2 scenarios for 2080 across three climate models: CCCMA-CGCM2, CSIRO-MK2 and HCCPR HADCM3. The current and the predicted otter distributions were used to identify priority areas for the conservation of the species, and overlapped to existing network of protected areas.Our projections show that climate change may profoundly reshuffle the otter’s potential distribution in Europe, with important differences between the two scenarios we considered. Overall, the priority areas for conservation of the otter in Europe appear to be unevenly covered by the existing network of protected areas, with the current conservation efforts being insufficient in most cases. For a better conservation, the existing protected areas should be integrated within a more general conservation and management strategy incorporating climate change projections. Due to the important role that the otter plays for freshwater habitats, our study further highlights the potential sensitivity of freshwater habitats in Europe to climate change.  相似文献

Lameness in breeding-age gilts and sows is a major cause of culling, resulting in increased economic losses and welfare concerns. This study determined if exercise during gestation would affect the musculo-skeletal system, production variables, and behavior. Gilts were blocked by BW and assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups: control (n = 10; no exercise), low exercise (n = 14; 122 m/d for 5 d/wk), and high exercise (n = 14; 122 m/d for 2 d/wk and 427 m/d for 3 d/wk). All gilts were stall-housed during gestation, and gilts were exercised between d 35 and 110 of gestation. Lameness score, BCS, BW, and blood were taken at multiple points before gestation, and during gestation and lactation. Blood serum was analyzed for carboxy-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen. Sow lying behavior was recorded for 3 d after farrowing. Farrowing data included litter weight and size at birth and weaning, and preweaning mortality. After weaning, 38 sows were slaughtered and muscles and the bones of the left fore- and hind-limbs were harvested. Bone density and quality were determined by computed tomography (CT) scans, dual energy x-ray scans, and bone-breaking force tests. The control group took longer to lie down than both exercise groups, and the low exercise group took longer to lie down than the high exercise group (P < 0.05). The number of pigs weaned was greater in the high exercise group than the control group (P < 0.05). Piglet preweaning mortality was greatest in the control group compared with both exercise groups (P < 0.05). The low exercise treatments exhibited a greater bone density (CT) in the humerus, radius, and tibia compared with that of the control group (P < 0.05). The bone density (CT) of the humerus in the low exercise group was greater than that of the high exercise group (P = 0.03). Breaking force in the humerus and femur was greater (P < 0.05) in the low exercise group than the control group. Breaking force in the tibia of the high exercise group was greater than the control group (P = 0.01). The tibia of both the low and high exercise groups had a greater breaking force (P < 0.05) than the control group. Although there was no benefit of exercise on lameness, differences in bone density and quality, lying behavior, and piglet survivability may provide useful insight into alternative housing for sows.  相似文献

AIMS: To gather information on management practices and farmer attitudes to management of cows and calves during the immediate post-partum period on dairy farms in New Zealand, and to assess these practices for associations with concentrations of total protein (TP) in serum of calves 1–8 days-old.

METHOD: Between July and September 2015 blood samples were collected from calves aged between 24 hours and 7 days, from dairy farms (n=105) in nine areas in New Zealand, on three occasions throughout the calving period. Concentrations of TP were determined in all serum samples. At each visit technicians collected 1?L of the pooled colostrum that was intended for feeding to newborn calves that day. These samples were assessed for Brix, coliform and total bacterial counts. After the last sampling visit, the calf rearer or farm manager were asked to complete a questionnaire describing calf and colostrum management practices on the farm. Potential farm-level variables associated with concentrations of TP in serum of sampled calves were identified using univariable and multivariable linear mixed models.

RESULTS: Mean concentration of TP in serum of calves across all farms was 59.8 (95% CI=59.4–60.2) g/L, and was associated with region and herd size in the final multivariable model. Concentrations of TP were lower in calves from farms in Otago (56.2 (95% CI=53.4–58.9) g/L) and Southland (56.9 (95% CI=54.1–59.7) g/L) compared to calves on farms in the Far North (62.6 (95% CI=59.8–65.3) g/L), and were lower in calves from farms with a herd size >600 (58.3 (95% CI=56.7–59.8) g/L) than ≤600 (61.3 (95% CI=60.1–62.5) g/L) cows. After accounting for fixed effects, farm accounted for only 8.4% of the unexplained variation. There was no association between any of the measures of colostrum quality and concentrations of TP in serum (p>0.2).

CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Very few herd-level variables were associated with concentrations of TP in serum. Risk factors that have been shown to be of importance in previous studies outside New Zealand were not identified as important in the current study. It is possible that, in the situation where calves are kept at pasture with their dams for prolonged periods, variables which influence how well a cow can feed its calf in the first 12–24 hours have a larger influence on concentrations of TP in serum than the collection and management of calves once they reach the rearing shed.  相似文献

Summary

Lime (Citrus aurantifolia Swingle cv. ‘Paan’) native to South East Asia, has a distinct flavour and quality characteristics. Maintenance of the green colour in the peel of lime is a desirable quality attribute during storage. Post-harvest chlorophyll degradation in lime was studied in fruit stored at room temperature (30°C) at a relative humidity (RH) of 70 – 85%. Within 7 d of storage, the total chlorophyll content decreased to 53.9% of its initial level. The highest chlorophyllase activity (1.68 units mg–1 protein) was observed after 4 d of storage and declined thereafter. Peroxidase activity differed from chlorophyllase activity and increased significantly to 6.25 units mg–1 protein after 9 d of storage, (i.e., at the late maturity stage). Respiration rate and 1-aminocyclopropene-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) oxidase activity did not significantly affect the chlorophyll degradation process in lime.The total nitrogen content of lime peel was inversely correlated with its chlorophyll content. A higher soluble protein content was observed in yellow peel than in mature green peel. A colour index chart was developed for maturity stages 1–4 in lime based on peel colour changes from mature green to full-yellow, and its correlation with chlorophyll content and fruit quality attributes.  相似文献

Abstract

AIMS: To assess the effect of two temperatures (ambient temperature and 4°C), three preservation methods (no preservative, yoghurt and potassium sorbate), and two periods of storage (3 and 7 days) on Brix and total bacterial and coliform counts of colostrum collected from New Zealand dairy farms.

METHODS: One litre of colostrum destined to be fed to newborn calves was collected from 55 New Zealand dairy farms in the spring of 2015. Six aliquots of 150 mL were obtained from each colostrum sample, with two aliquots left untreated, two treated with potassium sorbate and two with yoghurt, and one of each pair of aliquots stored at ambient temperature and the other at 4°C. All samples were tested for Brix, total bacterial counts and coliform counts before treatment (Day 0), and after 3 and 7 days of storage. The effect of preservation method and storage temperature on the change in Brix, bacterial and coliform counts after 3 or 7 days of storage was analysed using multivariable random effects models.

RESULTS: For all outcome variables there was a temperature by preservation interaction. For aliquots preserved with potassium sorbate, changes in Brix and bacterial counts did not differ between aliquots stored at ambient temperature or 4°C, but for aliquots preserved with yoghurt or no preservative the decrease in Brix and increase in bacterial counts was greater for aliquots stored at ambient temperature than 4°C (p<0.001). For aliquots preserved with potassium sorbate, coliform counts decreased at both temperatures, but for aliquots preserved with yoghurt or no preservative coliform counts increased for aliquots stored at 4°C, but generally decreased at ambient temperatures (p<0.001). There was also an interaction between duration of storage and temperature for bacterial counts (p<0.001). The difference in the increase in bacterial counts between aliquots stored at 4°C and ambient temperature after 3 days was greater than between aliquots stored at 4°C and ambient temperature after 7 days.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Use of potassium sorbate to preserve colostrum for 3 or 7 days resulted in little or no reduction in Brix and a lower increase in total bacterial counts than colostrum stored without preservative or with yoghurt added. Colostrum quality was not affected by storage temperature for samples preserved with potassium sorbate, but storage at 4°C resulted in better quality colostrum than storage at ambient temperatures for colostrum with no preservative or yoghurt added.  相似文献

Abstract

AIMS: To describe colostrum quality in spring-calving dairy herds in New Zealand, in terms of Brix, pH and total and coliform bacterial counts and to investigate associations between farm management practices and these measures of colostrum quality.

METHODS: In June 2015, commercial dairy farms (n=105), located in North and South Islands of New Zealand, were visited shortly after the first cows had calved, and when approximately 50% and 80% of the herd had calved (early, middle and late visits). One litre of pooled colostrum that was being fed to newborn calves was collected at each visit and used to determine Brix, pH, total bacterial and coliform counts. A survey of calf management practices was conducted with the herd manager or calf rearer after the final visit.

RESULTS: Of 298 pooled colostrum samples tested 29/298 (9.7%) had Brix >22%. Brix was higher on farms where calves were picked up twice daily compared with once daily (18.2 (95% CI=16.5–19.9)% vs. 15.9% (95% CI=15.2–16.6)%; p=0.012), and was lower where first milking colostrum was combined with colostrum obtained at later milkings (15.0 (95% CI=13.9–16.1)%) compared with where it was not (16.9 (95% CI=16.3–17.6)%; p=0.002). Vaccination of all cows against calf diarrhoeal pathogens was associated with increased Brix compared with no vaccination (18.1 (95% CI=16.6–19.6)% vs. 16.3 (95% CI=15.6–17.0)%; p=0.033). Mean pH of samples tested decreased from 5.97 (95% CI=5.84–6.09) to 5.58 (95% CI=5.45–5.71) for early and late-season visits, respectively (p<0.001). Of 268 samples tested, 23 (8.6%) had bacterial counts below the recommended threshold of 1.00×105 cfu/mL. Mean bacterial counts increased from 2.75 (95% CI=1.80–3.70)×108 to 4.99 (95% CI=3.95–6.03)×108 cfu/mL for early and late-season visits, respectively (p<0.001). Of 259 samples tested, 23 (8.9%) had coliform counts below the recommended threshold of 1.00×104 cfu/mL.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: On a large majority of dairy farms included in this study the pooled colostrum fed to newborn calves had sub-optimal Brix and excessive bacterial counts. Farm-level risk factors such as twice daily pick up of calves from the paddocks, herd vaccination and feeding pooled colostrum that did not combine colostrum obtained at later milkings with first milking colostrum were associated with colostrum quality measures.  相似文献

A condition resembling human sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis was identified in 3 young large-breed dogs. All 3 dogs had similar clinical signs: ascites, vomiting, and excessive borborygmus. The condition was discovered at laparotomy and confirmed histologically. Laparotomy revealed a sac-like formation totally or partially occupying the peritoneal cavity. The predominant histologic abnormality was marked peritoneal and serosal fibrosis. None of the dogs had a favorable response to treatment, and euthanasia was performed because of development of abdominal distention.  相似文献

An aerosol generating system capable of producing inert, insoluble, non-toxic, respirable, submicronic particles suitable for deposition, retention and clearance studies in the lungs of calves was designed and tested. The machine generated high volume outputs of respirable aerosols by nebulization of an aqueous solution of metallic ions, drying the droplet aerosol, thermal degradation in the presence of oxygen to form insoluble oxides, and subsequent cooling of the aerosol. Aqueous solutions of ferric nitrate, ferric chloride, ferric citrate, ferric oxalate, zinc acetate, lead acetate, cobalt nitrate, cobalt chloride and cobalt acetate were examined, and the resultant aerosols characterized by particle size distribution, shape, aerosol mass concentration, and production of toxic by-products. Iron oxide and cobalt oxide aerosols were judged suitable for inhalation studies in calves, and cobalt oxide was selected for pulmonary clearance studies due to the low background content of cobalt in lung tissue. The cobalt oxide aerosol selected had a geometric mean diameter (GMD) of 0.54 to 0.65 micron with a dimensionless geometric standard deviation (GSD) of 1.41 to 1.71, a mass aerosol concentration of 124 to 335 mg/m3, and a NO2 contamination of 5 to 33 ppm. The cobalt oxide particles were measurably polydisperse, but virtually all particles were smaller than 2.0 microns making the aerosol totally respirable.  相似文献

Gestating sows may be more susceptible to increasing dry bulb temperatures (TDB) due to greater metabolic heat production and increased body mass, especially as gestation advances. However, there are few studies on the thermoregulatory and physiological responses of sows at differing gestation stages exposed to gradually increasing temperatures. The study objective was to determine the thermoregulatory and physiological responses of nonpregnant (n = 12; parity 3.27 ± 0.86), mid-gestation (59.7 ± 9.6 d pregnant, n = 12; parity 3.25 ± 0.83), and late-gestation (99.0 ± 4.8 d pregnant, n = 12; parity 3.33 ± 0.75) sows exposed to increasing TDB. Prior to the experiment (5.0 ± 0.7 d), jugular catheters were placed in all sows. During the experiment, the TDB was increased incrementally by 2.45 ± 0.43 °C every 60 min from 19.84 ± 2.15 to 35.54 ± 0.43 °C over 400 min, and relative humidity was recorded at 40.49 ± 18.57%. Respiration rate (RR), heart rate (HR), skin temperature, and vaginal temperature were measured, and blood samples were obtained via the jugular catheter every 20 min. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED in SAS 9.4. RR increased at a lower TDB (P < 0.01) in late-gestation sows compared with mid-gestation and nonpregnant sows, but no differences were detected between mid-gestation and nonpregnant sows. Overall, late-gestation sows had greater RR (P < 0.01; 23 ± 2 breaths per min [brpm]) compared with mid-gestation (16 ± 2 brpm) and nonpregnant (15 ± 2 brpm) sows. Late-gestation sows had an overall greater HR (P < 0.01; 84 ± 5 beats per min [bpm]) than mid-gestation (76 ± 5 bpm) and nonpregnant (69 ± 5 bpm) sows. Late-gestation sows had overall reduced bicarbonate and total carbon dioxide levels (P = 0.02; 23.89 ± 1.97 and 25.41 ± 2.07 mmol/L, respectively) compared with mid-gestation (27.03 ± 1.97 and 28.58 ± 2.07 mmol/L, respectively) and nonpregnant (26.08 ± 1.97 and 27.58 ± 2.07 mmol/L, respectively) sows. Moreover, late-gestation sows had overall greater nitric oxide levels (P < 0.01; 248.82 ± 34.54 µM) compared with mid-gestation (110.47 ± 34.54 µM) and nonpregnant (41.55 ± 34.54 µM) sows. In summary, late-gestation sows appear to be more sensitive to increasing TDB as indicated by thermoregulatory and physiological responses when compared with mid-gestation or nonpregnant sows. The results from this study provide valuable information regarding thermoregulatory thresholds of sows at differing gestation stages.  相似文献

Successful identification of a desirable segregant depends partly on the parents chosen to make the crosses. This experiment was conducted to compare performance and genetic variability for seed yield, yield components, agronomic traits and harvest index of lines derived from low- and high-yielding flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) crosses, and to identify important yield components for flax seed yield improvement. The lines chosen as high yielding parents for this experiment were‘Linott’and 'Summit; and the low yielding parents were‘Grant’and Ci2395. The high-yielding lines produced significantly more seeds per boll and had a higher harvest index than the low-yielding lines. Evaluation of 161 F2:6 lines from four crosses among these lines showed that the greatest genetic variability, highest cross average, and highest F6 line seed yield occurred in the low x high cross,‘Grant’x‘Linott’. All low X high crosses exhibited higher genetic variances for seed yield than the high x high crosses. The high x high cross 'Summit’x‘Linott’had low genetic variance for seed yield. Number of bolls per area was determined by linear regression, path coefficient analysis, and stepwise multiple regression analysis to be the most important component of seed yield. This study showed that hybridization of low and high-yielding flax lines may be useful to increase genetic variability and obtain high-yielding flax lines.  相似文献
