A 13-year-old gelding was examined because of weight loss, hyperglobulinemia, and hypercalcemia. Possible causes of hypercalcemia that were considered included renal failure, primary hyperparathyroidism, vitamin D toxicosis, and malignancy. There was no history of vitamin D ingestion, and serum creatinine and parathyroid hormone concentrations were normal, making renal failure and primary hyperparathyroidism unlikely. The hypercalcemia was suspected to be a result of malignancy, but thorough testing did not reveal any neoplastic disease. Eight months later, serum parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) concentration was high, supporting the suggestion that hypercalcemia was a result of malignancy. In addition, radial immunodiffusion confirmed a selective 300-fold increase in serum IgA concentration. The horse was euthanatized, and postmortem examination revealed neoplastic infiltrates in the kidneys, lymph nodes, liver, and bone marrow. Neoplastic cells had morphologic characteristics of plasma cells, and immunohistochemical staining confirmed that neoplastic cells were expressing PTHrP and IgA. A laboratory study was conducted to examine the effects of food level and water temperature on the ingestion rate in the larvae of the peppermint shrimp Lysmata wurdemanni , a popular aquarium spe cies. Artemia nauplii were used as the food item. Number of newly hatched Artemia nauplii consumed by the larvae (from zoea II to zoea VII, zoea I can metamorphose to zoea II without exogenous nutrition in about one day) was measured daily at four food concentrations (2, 5, 10 and 20 Artemia nauplii/mL) and two temperature levels (25 C and 28 C). The experiment was conducted in 500-mL beakers with three replicates for each treatment. The results show that the shrimp consumed significantly more food at 28 C than at 25 C (P < 0.01). Ingestion rate increased with increasing food concentration in all larval stages and with larval development except for the lowest food level ( 2 Artemia nauplii/mL) where insufficient food supply limited the ingestion rate to around 35 Artemia nauplii/ larva per d after zoea IV stage. The larval development rate was significantly lower (P < 0.05) in the shrimp subjected to the two lowest food concentrations (2 and 5 Artemia nauplii/mL) in the 500-mL beakers. But in a separate experiment conducted in the 1,400-mL beakers, the results were reversed: both survivorship and development rate were significantly lower at the two higher food levels (6 and 12 nauplii/mL) than those at 3 nauplii/mL level. In a convenience sample of 100 feedlot operations (included in the United States Department of Agriculture: Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service 1994 Cattle on Feed Evaluation), up to 25 cattle fecal samples were collected and tested for the presence of Salmonella from each of two pens (the pen which contained the most-recent arrivals, and the pen with cattle that had been on feed the longest). One or more Salmonella spp. were recovered from 38 (38.0%) of the 100 feedlots, 52 (26.0%) of the 200 pens and 273 (5.5%) of the 4977 fecal samples collected. Multivariable logistic regression indicated that feeding tallow and feeding whole cottonseed or cottonseed hulls within seven days prior to fecal sample collection was associated with an increased risk of finding Salmonella in a pen. Variables not found to be significantly associated with the detection of Salmonella in a pen included region, operation size, use of sprinklers, time on feed, type of cattle in the pen, number and concentration of cattle in a pen, feeding probiotics, and various other feeds. 相似文献
A case-control study of pseudorabies virus (PRV) infection in Illinois swine herds was conducted to identity risk factors associated with PRV infection. Factors identified as being associated with increased risk of PRV infection included percentage of herd in total confinement (adjusted OR (aOR)=19.7, 95% confidence interval (CI): 3.3–117.2) and having two or more PRV positive herds in the township (aOR=3.2, 95% CI: 1.0–10.2). A protective factor identified in the study included using one's own vehicle to transport pigs to market rather than hiring truckers (aOR=0.2, 95% CI: 0.07–0.6). A protective factor for producers who used their own vehicle for transporting pigs was cleaning the truck after off-site trips (aOR=0.09, 95% CI: 0.03–0.2). Management factors which can be most easily altered by producers who wish to prevent PRV infection in their herd include purchasing one's own vehicle for transport of pigs, and cleaning out this vehicle carefully after off-site visits. Total confinement herds and herds in areas where PRV is endemic appear to be at higher risk of becoming infected with PRV, and managers should be especially aware of herd security measures. 相似文献
To evaluate the effect of diet on hair mineral content, 61 feeds, 31 pasture grasses, 29 mineral supplements, 31 water samples and hair samples from 391 horses from 31 ranches in Arizona were analyzed for fifteen minerals. Based on dietary histories and estimated intakes when free choice access was involved, mineral intake of the horses was calculated and compared to mineral content of the hair. Data were evaluated by regression analysis for correlations between hair and dietary minerals and variations in hair mineral content attributable to coat color, age, sex and breed.11,12,13,14
There were differences (P<.05) in hair mineral content of horses of different breeds, coat colors, ages and sex, regardless of dietary intake. However, there were some significant correlations between feed mineral intake and hair mineral content. A few weak simple correlations (Ca:Ca, P:P, Na:Na, K:K) were found, but complex mineral correlations (Ca:P, Ca:Na, Zn:K, Fe:Zn etc.) were more common and had higher correlation coefficients (Table 7). Variations in mineral intake explained only 30% of the variation for a given hair mineral, with the exception of manganese. The multiple relationships between minerals and their effect on metabolism appear to have a greater effect on hair mineral content than a single mineral deficiency or excess17,18,20,21 and may offer better insight to the interpretation of mineral nutrition than simple one to one correlations. 相似文献
A 25-year-old Arabian gelding was presented for investigation of a subcutaneous neck mass. Fine-needle aspirates and impression smears revealed mast cells with widely varying degrees of cytoplasmic granulation and scattered eosinophils. Histopathology revealed a poorly circumscribed mass composed of sheets and bundles of mast cells with a large population of eosinophils. The mast cells were separated into numerous lobules by a heavy collagenous stroma, and multifocal collagen necrosis was present. Strong reactivity of the tumor cells for both Giemsa and toluidine blue stains confirmed the diagnosis of a mast cell tumor, and a Luna stain accentuated the eosinophilic infiltrates. Cutaneous mast cell tumors are found in many domestic animals but are uncommonly encountered in horses. Equine cutaneous mast cell tumors are usually benign, and there are no reports of visceral metastasis. Surgical excision is thought to be curative. 相似文献
