An outbreak of congenital hydranencephaly and cerebellar hypoplasia occurred between November 1985 and May 1986 in Miyazaki, South Kyushu, Japan. Seventy-three calves had nervous signs of varying severity such as inability to stand, locomotor difficulties, defective vision and difficulty in sucking. At necropsy, 62 calves had macroscopic lesions in the central nervous system: hydranencephaly accompanied by cerebellar hypoplasia in 47; hydranencephaly alone in eight; and dilatation of the lateral ventricle in seven; none had arthrogryposis. Microscopically, all 62 cases involved various degrees of hypoplasia of neural components, such as total or partial thinning of the cerebral or cerebellar laminae. Heterotopia, such as abnormal islands of granule cells or Purkinje cells was also observed. Fourteen of these animals had other lesions such as non-purulent encephalitis, focal gliosis, neuronal degeneration, calcification or pseudocalcification, and cholesterol deposits, activation of vascular endothelial cells and haemorrhage. From the findings, these cases were considered to represent mainly hypoplasia of nerve tissue due to infection with a virus different from Akabane virus. 相似文献

The plans and technical specifications of a unit specifically designed for large animal radiography are described. The unit has two examination rooms, one for routine radiography in the standing position and the other for special procedures and investigations utilizing a custom-designed table with a carbon fiber top. The table is computer operated and the x-ray tubes above and below it are capable of penetrating the thickest parts of horses as well as performing such procedures as linear tomography, angiography, and magnification radiography. The facility is equipped with an image intensifier, television monitor, 100 mm spot film camera, Potter-Bucky grid, and Puck film changer as well as a number of additional features for coping with anesthetized large animals. OBJECTIVE: To measure the quadriceps angle (Q-angle) in dogs with congenital patellar luxation using magnetic resonance (MR) methods. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective clinical study. ANIMALS: Thirty-eight client-owned dogs. METHODS: Thirty-eight dogs were examined and placed into the following groups based on the degree of patellar instability: normal, grade I, grade II, and grade III. MR images of 37 pelvic limbs without patellar instability, 33 pelvic limbs with patellar luxation, and 6 limbs with cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) rupture were made. The Q-angle was calculated using trigonometric methods based on MR images. Limbs with patellar luxation were compared with normal stifles and stifle with other disorders. RESULTS: The average Q-angle of the normal group was 10.5 degrees (24.9 degrees to -2.0 degrees ). The grade I group had an average Q-angle of 12.2 degrees (28.8 degrees to 2 degrees ), the grade II group 24.3 degrees (44.6 degrees to 7.7 degrees ), and the grade III group 36.6 degrees (51.4 degrees to 15.6 degrees ). The average Q-angle of limbs with an isolated CrCL rupture was 19.3 degrees (34.7 degrees to 3.9 degrees ). CONCLUSION: MR images can be used to make exact calculations of the Q-angle. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: MR images can be used to quantify the degree of patellar luxation. 相似文献

Acetone-dried hypophyses from the common toad and bullfrog administered intramuscularly was an effective inducing agent for spawning the African catfish Clarias gariepinus held in cisterns. A dosage schedule of 4–6 mg dry gland/kg female catfish applied in two installments (equal doses) is recommended. Toad and frog hypophyses were as good as or better than human chorionic gonadotropin or homoplastic injection to induce spawning of C. gariepinus under ambient temperature conditions (28–30 C). 相似文献

Conventional film autoradiography was used at the light microscopic level for the localization and quantization of 4-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors in the locust brain (Schistocerca americana). Localization of the receptor site was achieved via binding with the receptor-ligand probe [3 H]muscimol. Frozen sections were cut and subsequently incubated either in 40 nM [3H]muscimol or by coincubating sections with [3H]muscimol and one of the following: GABA (50 μM)], a receptor specific agonist [muscimol (1 μM) or isoguvacine (1 μM)], an uptake inhibitor [nipecotic acid (50 μM)], or a noncompetitive channel modulator [avermectin B1a, (1 μM) or aldrin (50 μM)]. Through computer image enhancement and densitometric analysis of the optical density of [3H]muscimol binding sites, the interaction of the above compounds with the putative GABA receptor was determined for various anatomical regions of the locust brain. By comparing the differently treated, but adjacent sections, GABA receptor distribution was quantitated and mapped. Receptor sites were found distributed in the antennal lobes, central body, β-lobe and β-lobe of the corpus pedunculatum, protocerebral bridge, and calyx as well as the optic lobe regions. 相似文献

The rate of transformation of a pesticide as a function of the depth in the soil is needed as an input into computations on the risk of residues leaching to groundwater. The herbicide bentazone was incubated at 15 °C in soil materials derived from four layers at depths of up to 2.5 m in a humic sandy soil profile with a fluctuating water table (0.8 to 1.4 m), while simulating the redox conditions existing in the field. Gamma‐irradiation experiments indicated that bentazone is mainly transformed by microbial activity in the soil. The rate constant for transformation was highest in the humic sandy top layer; it decreased with depth in the sandy vadose subsoil. However, material from the top of the phreatic aquifer had a higher rate constant than that from the layers just above. The presence of fossil organic material in the fluviatile water‐saturated sediment probably stimulated microbial activity and bentazone transformation. The changes in the transformation rate constant with depth showed the same trend as those in some soil factors, viz organic carbon content, water‐extractable phosphorus and microbial density as measured by fluorescence counts. However, the (low) concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the top of the aquifer did not fit the trend. A 9‐month‐old intact crossbred female cat was presented with jaundice, intermittent anorexia and lethargy, increased hepatic enzyme activities, and hyperammonemia. Abdominal ultrasound and computed tomographic examinations determined that the liver had a rounded and irregular margin, and histopathological examination identified excessive accumulation of copper hepatocytes in the liver. Concentrations of both blood and urine copper were higher than in healthy cats. The patient responded well to treatment with penicillamine. Clinicopathological abnormalities and clinical signs improved within 2 months, and the patient was alive for >9 months after starting treatment. Genetic examination determined that the patient and its littermate had a single‐nucleotide variation (SNV, p. T1297R) that impaired the function of the ATP7B gene product; the gene that is mutated in patients with Wilson's disease (WD). Hepatic copper accumulation was believed to be associated with the SNV of the ATP7B gene, and the patient had a genetic disorder of copper metabolism equivalent to WD in humans. 相似文献

A 7‐year‐old neutered female domestic shorthaired cat born in Poland and then moved to Japan presented to the local clinic with recent onset of convulsive cluster seizures and status epilepticus. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed bilateral swelling of the hippocampus with T2 hyperintensity and contrast enhancing image, suggesting hippocampal necrosis. The cat completely recovered after treatment with antiepileptic drugs (AED) and administration of prednisolone (1 mg/kg PO q24h for 4 days and tapered). However, cluster seizures reoccurred and developed into status epilepticus despite increasing doses of AED. Although the convulsions were resolved by other AEDs, stupor and renal failure developed, and the cat was euthanized. Pathological findings were consistent with hippocampal necrosis. Immunological analysis for leucine‐rich glioma inactivated 1 (LGI1) autoantibodies was negative, but antibodies against DCC (deleted in colorectal carcinoma) known as netrin‐1 receptor were found. This report describes a case of feline autoimmune limbic encephalitis and hippocampal necrosis that were presumably associated with DCC autoantibodies. 相似文献
