Amblyomma variegatum, the Tropical Bont Tick (TBT), is the principal vector of heartwater and is associated with dermatophilosis, major causes of losses in animal production and mortality in Caribbean livestock. From 1995 to 2007, the Caribbean Amblyomma Programme (CAP) supported treatment and surveillance activities in 11 islands of the Eastern Caribbean with an initial objective of eradicating TBT. In addition to control activities, surveillance data were collected between 1997 and 2006 in a unique regional database. We report the analysis of the surveillance data from four islands (Nevis, St Kitts, St Lucia, and Barbados) where control and surveillance followed the initial protocol and where enough data were collected. We describe the evolution of TBT infestation levels and the efforts carried out throughout the surveillance period. Logistic regression identified factors associated with herds found infested with TBT. Overall, treatment programmes were associated with a decrease in proportion of TBT-infested farms. High surveillance efforts were carried out throughout the 1997–2007 period for all island of interest, but inadequate level of surveillance was observed in several quarters especially for St Kitts. Third quarter of the year, as indication of adult TBT seasonality on livestock, was significantly associated with the risk of detecting TBT in Nevis and St Kitts livestock farms. Also, presence of cattle in Nevis farms was shown associated with an increasing probability of farms being declared TBT-infested. Outcomes of these analyses provide basis for recommendations to improve future national and regional control and surveillance activities. This analysis demonstrates the usefulness of long term and adequate surveillance data for control programmes and identification of factors associated with risk of having infested herds.  相似文献

For coniferous gymnosperms, few data exist as to the contribution of the membrane-associated proteome to cell wall and wood formation. In this study, we begin to address this knowledge deficiency by examining the proteomic profile of Golgi-enriched membrane preparations derived from developing Pinus radiata compression wood. These membrane preparations were generated by a combination of discontinuous sucrose gradient centrifugation and Triton X-114-based phase separation. Fractionation by phase separation removed contaminating proteins associated with the cytoskeleton and enabled the discrimination between soluble and membrane-bound/integral proteins. The proteomic analysis of the resulting aqueous and detergent phases using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry resulted in the identification of 175 proteins. The majority of the identified proteins were membrane bound/integral and originated from cellular components such as the nucleus, plastids, endoplasmic reticulum, plasma membrane and Golgi vesicles. On the basis of bioinformatic analysis, many of the identified proteins were predicted to be involved either in the regulation of wood formation or in cell wall biosynthesis, which indicated that the proteomic analysis of non-cytosolic proteins in developing xylem is a useful strategy to investigate the molecular aspects of wood formation in pine.  相似文献

Abstract

Following declining numbers in some areas in the 1980s, Mute Swan numbers have shown a marked increase in recent years. In some areas, such as the Wylye Valley in Wiltshire, this increase has been accompanied by complaints of damage caused to farming and fishing interests. The population dynamics of this population of Mute Swans is described, including its habitat preferences, and these findings are related to possible management options. As the Wylye catchment already receives immigrants from unknown sources, culling and translocation are not appropriate solutions to prevent agricultural damage. A combination of scaring, repellents and the provision of alternative food sources could provide the most successful long‐term management. Whilst different techniques may be needed to resolve the fishing problem, it is considered that integration of selected management options is most likely to provide maximum benefit.  相似文献

Brans of specialty sorghum varieties (high tannin, black, and black with tannin) were used to investigate the effects of sorghum phenolic compounds on starch digestibility of soft and hard sorghum endosperm porridges. Endosperms of varieties with the highest and lowest grain hardness index were mixed with brans of specialty sorghum varieties in the ratio of 85:15 and cooked into porridges with distilled water using a Rapid Visco Analyzer. Brans of condensed tannin containing sorghum varieties (high‐tannin and black with tannin sorghums) significantly (P < 0.05) decreased starch digestibility and estimated glycemic index (EGI) and increased resistant starch (RS) content of endosperm porridges. However, the addition of phenolic‐rich tannin‐free (mostly anthocyanins) black sorghum bran significantly (P < 0.05) increased starch digestibility and EGI but did not affect RS content of endosperm porridges. The disparate effects with black bran may, in part, result from its larger particle size and different bran structure compared with other sorghum varieties evaluated. Thus, our study showed that not only presence of phenolic compounds in the brans but also structural differences of specialty sorghum brans can have significant effects on starch digestibility.  相似文献

Purpose

Exposure to elevated ultraviolet B (UV-B) radiation during plant growth may influence plant tissue chemistry and subsequent decomposition. We conducted a 22-month decomposition experiment to evaluate the effects of UV-B radiation on litter chemistry and subsequent decomposition in humid subtropical forest systems.

Materials and methods

Leaf litters were derived from five native tree species, including Cunninghamia lanceolata, Cinnamomum camphora, Schima superba, Cyclobalanopsis glauca, and Elaeocarpus sylvestris, which grew under ambient and elevated UV-B radiation treatments for 1 year.

Result and discussion

UV-B treatment significantly altered the original C, N, P, K, and lignin content and ratios of C/N, lignin/N, and C/P of leaf litter of five species but just slightly accelerated decomposition at variable degree from 2 % to 13 %. Statistical analyses showed litter species, but not UV-B treatment, had significant effect on decomposition. Only initial lignin content was significantly related to the decay rate. Abundant precipitation and warm temperature in subtropical China maybe weaken or even mask the importance of litter chemistry change resulted from UV-B radiation to decomposition especially in early decomposition stage.

Conclusions

Exposure to supplemental UV-B level induced significant changes of the initial leaf litter chemistry but did not accelerate significantly subsequent decomposition of each species in humid subtropical areas of China at least in the early phase. The interspecific differences in litter chemistry of the five species showed greater effect on decomposition than elevated UV-B radiation at the early decomposition stage.  相似文献

This study examined the interaction between sorghum grain hardness and sorghum malt quality in terms of diastatic power and free amino nitrogen with endosperm modification during malting. The changes in kernel hardness during malting of four commercial sorghum cultivars of differing quality in terms of endosperm texture and potential malt quality were measured using tests for hardness and density, and endosperm modification was followed by scanning electron microscopy. The general pattern of modification during sorghum malting was confirmed to start at the endosperm–scutellum interface and then continue into the floury endosperm toward the kernel distal end. Significantly, a cultivar of intermediate hardness and low malting quality remained harder and modified more slowly than a harder cultivar of high malting quality. It appeared that intrinsic grain hardness and malt amylase and protease activity both affected malt hardness and endosperm modification, but amylase and protease activity had a greater effect because of their degradation of endosperm starch and protein. Of the hardness and density tests studied, the tangential abrasive dehulling device (TADD) gave the best measure of hardness throughout malting; maximum range was 24–100% kernel removed over five days of malting. Also, the data agreed with the observed malt modification rates. Thus, the TADD may have application as a simple and rapid test for estimating sorghum malt quality.  相似文献

Bentazon [3-(l-methylethyl)-(1H)-2,l,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide] was applied at two rates to nine potato cultivars in the field, with or without a crop oil, to plant foliage at two different heights. Seven days after application of bentazon, foliar injury ranged from 0 to 36 percent depending on rate, cultivar, and plant height at the time of application. Of nine cultivars tested, Russet Burbank was the most susceptible to injury and Red LaSoda the least susceptible. A bentazon application rate of 1.12 kg a.i./ha, compared to a rate of 0.84 Kg a.i./ha, resulted in a biologically insignificant increase in foliar injury of two to four percent and a significant increase in weed control. The addition of crop oil to bentazon did not result in an increase of foliar injury, but increased the percentage of weeds controlled approximately two-fold. With one exception, application of bentazon to plants 8–15 cm in height resulted in less foliar injury than application to plants 20–30 cm in height. Application of bentazon to larger plants resulted in lower yield and quality. For most cultivars, the application of bentazon (1.12 kg/ha a.i.) and crop oil (2.3 L/ha) to 8 to 15 cm-tall potato plants resulted in no appreciable loss in potato tuber yield, while controlling 74–85 percent of broadleaf weeds.  相似文献

To estimate the relative contributions of woody and herbaceous vegetation to savanna productivity, we measured the 13C/12C isotopic ratios of leaves from trees, shrubs, grasses and the surface soil carbon pool for 22 savannas in Australia, Brazil and Ghana covering the full savanna spectrum ranging from almost pure grassland to closed woodlands on all three continents. All trees and shrubs sampled were of the C3 pathway and all grasses of the C4 pathway with the exception of Echinolaena inflexa (Poir.) Chase, a common C3 grass of the Brazilian cerrado. By comparing the carbon isotopic compositions of the plant and carbon pools, a simple model relating soil delta 13C to the relative abundances of trees + shrubs (woody plants) and grasses was developed. The model suggests that the relative proportions of a savanna ecosystem's total foliar projected cover attributable to grasses versus woody plants is a simple and reliable index of the relative contributions of grasses and woody plants to savanna net productivity. Model calibrations against woody tree canopy cover made it possible to estimate the proportion of savanna productivity in the major regions of the world attributable to trees + shrubs and grasses from ground-based observational maps of savanna woodiness. Overall, it was estimated that 59% of the net primary productivity (Np) of tropical savannas is attributable to C4 grasses, but that this proportion varies significantly within and between regions. The C4 grasses make their greatest relative contribution to savanna Np in the Neotropics, whereas in African regions, a greater proportion of savanna Np is attributable to woody plants. The relative contribution of C4 grasses in Australian savannas is intermediate between those in the Neotropics and Africa. These differences can be broadly ascribed to large scale differences in soil fertility and rainfall.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The common wasp, Vespula vulgaris (L.), and the German wasp, Vespula germanica (F.), are significant problems in New Zealand beech forests (Nothofagus spp.), adversely affecting native birds and invertebrate biodiversity. This work was undertaken to develop synthetic attractants for these species to enable more efficient monitoring and management. RESULTS: Seven known wasp attractants (acetic acid, butyl butyrate, isobutanol, heptyl butyrate, octyl butyrate and 2,4‐hexadienyl butyrate) were field tested, and only heptyl butyrate and octyl butyrate attracted significantly higher numbers of wasps than a non‐baited trap. Accordingly, a series of straight‐chain esters from methyl to decyl butyrate were prepared and field tested for attraction of social wasps. Peak biological activity occurred with hexyl butyrate, heptyl butyrate, octyl butyrate and nonyl butyrate. Polyethylene bags emitting approximately 18.4–22.6 mg day?1 of heptyl butyrate were more attractive than polyethylene bags emitting approximately 14.7–16.8 mg day?1 of heptyl butyrate in the field. Electroantennogram (EAG) studies indicated that queens and workers of V. vulgaris had olfactory receptor neurons responding to various aliphatic butyrates. CONCLUSION: These results are the first to be reported on the EAG response and the attraction of social wasps to synthetic chemicals in New Zealand beech forests and will enable monitoring of social wasp activity in beech forests.
