Time-resolved dynamics in N2O4 probed using high harmonic generation

The attosecond time-scale electron-recollision process that underlies high harmonic generation has uncovered extremely rapid electronic dynamics in atoms and diatomics. We showed that high harmonic generation can reveal coupled electronic and nuclear dynamics in polyatomic molecules. By exciting large amplitude vibrations in dinitrogen tetraoxide, we showed that tunnel ionization accesses the ground state of the ion at the outer turning point of the vibration but populates the first excited state at the inner turning point. This state-switching mechanism is manifested as bursts of high harmonic light that is emitted mostly at the outer turning point. Theoretical calculations attribute the large modulation to suppressed emission from the first excited state of the ion. More broadly, these results show that high harmonic generation and strong-field ionization in polyatomic molecules undergoing bonding or configurational changes involve the participation of multiple molecular orbitals.  相似文献   

Genetic evaluation of cutting scores in horses

Cutting scores for 3399 horses representing 327 different sires from the NCHA World Championship Futurities of 1975 through 1983 were used to calculate heritability and yearly change in scores. The analysis yielded a heritability estimate of 19%±5%. Appropriate selection schemes, then, should be successful in bringing about an improvement in cutting score. The analysis of yearly trend, however, indicates that average cutting scores at NCHA futurities are decreasing by 0.78 points per year.  相似文献   

Quantification of Globodera rostochiensis and G. pallida in mixed populations using species-specific thermostable proteins

A method has been developed to quantify species ratios in mixed populations. The method is based on the separation of species-specific thermostable proteins by SDS-PAGE. Densitometric analyses of the 17 kD protein ofGlobodera pallida and the 18 kD protein ofG. rostochiensis revealed a high correlation (R ²=0.93) with the species ratio in the mixed samples. Within the limits of 10 to 90% of each species, one can estimate with 95% reliability the species composition with 3 to 6% deviation.Samenvatting Een methode is ontwikkeld om de samenstelling van soortenmengsels vanGlobodera rostochiensis enG. pallida te kwantificeren. Bij deze methode wordt gebruik gemaakt van de soort-specifieke thermostabiele eiwitten die met behulp van SDS-PAGE gescheiden worden. De kleurintensiteit van het 17 kD eiwit vanG. pallida en het 18 kD eiwit vanG. rostochiensis is per gel-laan bepaald m.b.v. een densitometer en heeft een lineair verband met de soortsverhouding in de mengsels (R ²=0.93). Evaluation of ivermectin paste in the treatment of ponies for Parascaris equorum infections

Twenty ponies less than 18 months of age and infected with Parascaris equorum were treated with either 0.2 mg of ivermectin/kg of body weight (n = 10) or a placebo (n = 10; controls). Five control and 5 ivermectin-treated ponies were euthanatized 14 and 35 days after treatment, respectively. At necropsy, the small intestinal contents, lungs, and liver were examined for larvae and/or adult P equorum. Significantly (P less than 0.02) higher mean total numbers of P equorum were found in the small intestinal contents of the controls on day 14 (51) and on day 35 (21) than in the ivermectin-treated ponies on days 14 (0) and 35 (3). The efficacy of ivermectin in removing adult and intestinal larvae of P equorum at 14 days after treatment was 100%. The efficacies of ivermectin in removing adults and intestinal larvae of P equorum at 35 days after treatment were 100% and 76.9%, respectively. Gross examination of liver and lung tissues revealed damage as a result of P equorum infections in all ponies. The Baermann technique used on liver and lung tissues did not yield any P equorum larvae. Adverse reactions attributable to treatment were not observed.  相似文献

Hydrogen radicals, nitrogen radicals, and the production of O3 in the upper troposphere

The concentrations of the hydrogen radicals OH and HO2 in the middle and upper troposphere were measured simultaneously with those of NO, O3, CO, H2O, CH4, non-methane hydrocarbons, and with the ultraviolet and visible radiation field. The data allow a direct examination of the processes that produce O3 in this region of the atmosphere. Comparison of the measured concentrations of OH and HO2 with calculations based on their production from water vapor, ozone, and methane demonstrate that these sources are insufficient to explain the observed radical concentrations in the upper troposphere. The photolysis of carbonyl and peroxide compounds transported to this region from the lower troposphere may provide the source of HOx required to sustain the measured abundances of these radical species. The mechanism by which NO affects the production of O3 is also illustrated by the measurements. In the upper tropospheric air masses sampled, the production rate for ozone (determined from the measured concentrations of HO2 and NO) is calculated to be about 1 part per billion by volume each day. This production rate is faster than previously thought and implies that anthropogenic activities that add NO to the upper troposphere, such as biomass burning and aviation, will lead to production of more O3 than expected.  相似文献   

North atlantic oscillation dynamics recorded in greenland ice cores

Carefully selected ice core data from Greenland can be used to reconstruct an annual proxy North Atlantic oscillation (NAO) index. This index for the past 350 years indicates that the NAO is an intermittent climate oscillation with temporally active (coherent) and passive (incoherent) phases. No indication for a single, persistent, multiannual NAO frequency is found. In active phases, most of the energy is located in the frequency band with periods less than about 15 years. In addition, variability on time scales of 80 to 90 years has been observed since the mid-19th century.  相似文献   

Caesarean section and other methods for assisted delivery: comparison of effects on mare mortality and complications.

Data from 116 mares that had caesarean section or vaginal delivery at 2 university hospitals were analysed in 5 groups, as follows: dystocia corrected by caesarean section, Group DCS (n = 48); elective caesarean section, Group ECS (n = 10); caesarean section concurrently with colic surgery, Group CCS (n = 8); assisted vaginal delivery, Group AVD (n = 22); and controlled vaginal delivery under general anaesthesia, Group CVD (n = 28). Survival rate in all mares that had caesarean section, excluding Group CCS, was 88% (51/58). All mares in Group ECS survived and Group CCS had the lowest survival rate (38%). In 98 mares with dystocia, Groups DCS (15%) and AVD (14%) had significantly lower (P<0.05) mortality rates than Group CVD (29%). There were no differences between groups for duration of dystocia. The placenta was retained in 75 (65%) of 116 mares, and for a longer period following elective caesarean section than following assisted vaginal delivery. Multiple complications (> or = 3) were recorded in 6 mares in Group CVD but not in the other groups. Of the 102 foals delivered from 98 mares with dystocia, 11 (11%) were alive at delivery and 5 (5%) survived to discharge. Survival rate for foals was 38% in Group CCS, and 90% in Group ECS. Under conditions similar to those in this study, it is calculated that caesarean section is preferable to CVD if dystocia is protracted and great difficulty and trauma is involved, even if CVD allows delivery of the foal.  相似文献   

Ivermectin toxicosis after topical administration in dog-faced fruit bats (Cynopterus brachyotis).

Forty dog-faced fruit bats (Cynopterus brachyotis) were administered 1 drop of 1% ivermectin topically as part of a routine physical exam and deworming program, and 11 developed sudden generalized paresis. Six of the bats recovered within 24-48 hr, and the remaining 5 were presented recumbent and weak to the University of Florida Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Ivermectin toxicosis was suspected, and the admitted bats died or were euthanatized within 3-5 days of the development of clinical signs despite supportive care. Three of the dead bats had renal tubular necrosis.  相似文献
