Objective To compare arterial blood pressure measurements obtained from the femoral and auricular arteries in anaesthetized pigs. Study design Prospective experimental study. Animals Fifteen female Large White pigs were used weighing 21.3 ± 2.3 kg. Methods The pigs were anaesthetized with tiletamine/zolazepam and xylazine administered intramuscularly, and anaesthesia maintained with isoflurane delivered in oxygen/nitrogen. Arterial oxygen partial pressures were maintained between 11.3 and 13.3 kPa and PaCO2 between 4.6 and 6.0 kPa. Monitoring included electrocardiogram, capnography and invasive blood pressure. The auricular and femoral arteries were catheterized for continuous systolic (SAP), diastolic (DAP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) measurements. Measurements were recorded every 15 minutes. Statistical analysis involved a Bland–Altman plot analysis. Results The mean difference ± confidence intervals between the femoral and the auricular arterial diastolic, systolic and mean blood pressure measurements during hypotension were 2 ± 7, 2 ± 5 and 2 ± 5 mmHg respectively. In conditions of normotension mean difference ± confidence intervals, of femoral and auricular arterial blood pressure measurements of diastolic, systolic and mean blood pressure were 4 ± 5, 3 ± 7 and 4 ± 4 mmHg respectively. In conditions of increased arterial blood pressure, mean difference ± confidence intervals, of femoral and auricular arterial blood pressure measurements of diastolic, systolic and mean blood pressure were 4 ± 5, 3 ± 8 and 4 ± 4 mmHg respectively. Conclusion Auricular artery catheterization is easier and quicker to perform. Pressure measurements from the auricular artery compared well with the femoral artery. Clinical relevance We found that auricular arterial blood pressures were similar to femoral arterial values under the conditions of this experiment. The purpose of this investigation was to define the magnetic resonance imaging anatomy of the rostral part of the equine head. 10 mm-thick, T1-weighted images of two isolated equine cadaver heads were obtained using a 1.5 Tesla magnet and a body coil. MR images were compared to corresponding frozen cross-sections of the cadaver head. Relevant anatomic structures were identified and labeled at each level. The resulting images provided excellent anatomic detail of the oral and nasal cavities, paranasal sinuses and associated structures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utility of double-phase parathyroid scintigraphy using 99mTc-sestamibi for detecting and localizing hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands in hypercalcemic dogs. Fifteen hypercalcemic dogs that underwent parathyroid scintigraphy were included in this study: 3 dogs with hypercalcemia of malignancy, and 12 dogs with hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue (parathyroid adenoma or parathyroid hyperplasia). The presence of parathyroid adenoma or parathyroid hyperplasia was documented by histopathologic examination. In 3 dogs with hypercalcemia of malignancy, parathyroid scintigraphy was negative for hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue and the scans were classified as true negative. Parathyroid scintigraphy correctly identified the presence and location of hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue in only 1 of 6 dogs with a parathyroid adenoma. False positive and false negative results occurred in dogs with parathyroid adenomas. Parathyroid scintigraphy failed to detect hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue in 5 of 6 dogs with parathyroid hyperplasia and were classified as false negative. False positive results were obtained in the remaining dog with parathyroid hyperplasia. Sensitivity of parathyroid scintigraphy for detecting and localizing hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue was 11%, specificity was 50%, and overall accuracy was 27%. Positive and negative predictive value were 25% and 27%, respectively. Sensitivity for detection of parathyroid adenomas was 25%, and sensitivity for detection of hyperplastic glands was 0 %. Results of this study indicate that double-phase parathyroid scintigraphy does not appear to have acceptable accuracy in detecting hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands in dogs. Due to the poor sensitivity and specificity of the technique in dogs, parathyroid scintigraphy is not recommended for definitive identification of abnormal parathyroid glands as the cause of hypercalcemia in dogs. 相似文献

Excavations at Quebrada Jaguay 280 (QJ-280) (16 degrees30'S) in south coastal Peru demonstrated that Paleoindian-age people of the Terminal Pleistocene (about 11,100 to 10,000 carbon-14 years before the present or about 13,000 to 11,000 calibrated years before the present) in South America relied on marine resources while resident on the coast, which extends the South American record of maritime exploitation by a millennium. This site supports recent evidence that Paleoindian-age people had diverse subsistence systems. The presence of obsidian at QJ-280 shows that the inhabitants had contact with the adjacent Andean highlands during the Terminal Pleistocene. 相似文献

The metabolizable energy (ME) content, digestibility in vivo and chemical composition of fermented and urea-treated whole crop wheat (WCW) forage harvested were measured at different maturities. Over 2 years, twenty-four wheat forages (cv. Slepjner, Hussar and Cadenza) were harvested at 376, 516 and 632 g dry matter (DM) kg−1 in Year 1 and 341, 467 and 544 g DM kg−1 in Year 2 (Cuts 1, 2 and 3 respectively). Forages were conserved in 200−-ι barrels with or without a formic acid-based additive and with urea in Cuts 2 and 3 (20 or 40 g kg−1 DM). Chemical compositions, digestibility in vivo and energy losses in faeces, urine and methane were measured in wethers fed 12 g DM kg−1 live weight. Respective ranges in pH, crude protein, water-soluble carbohydrates, starch and neutral detergent fibre plus amylase (NDFA) contents were 3·8–8·5, 89–394, 2–43, 23–424 and 306–655 g kg−1 DM. ME content, digestible organic matter content (DOMD) and digestibilities of starch and NDFA ranged between 8·4 and 15·7 MJ kg−1 DM, 558 and 708 g kg−1 DM, 0·901 and 0·999 and 0·362 and 0·693 respectively. Predicted methane energy losses were poorly correlated with measured values ( r 2 < 0·45) in both years, but this accounted for less than 0.1 MJ ME kg−1 DM. Significant ( P < 0.05) effects of maturity on the ME/DOMD ratio were observed and ascribed to differences in the extent of fermentation. Therefore, treatment application and maturity exert considerable influence on the ME content of WCW. 相似文献
