ABSTRACT

Soybean yields in Ghana are low and stagnant in spite of the trio of recommendations: (1) improved seed, (2) rhizobium inoculant and (3) phosphorous fertilizer application being promoted by government to boost productivity. This study evaluates the response of soybean to Pro-soil biostimulant, triple super phosphate (TSP), and rhizobium inoculant in the interior savanna of Ghana. A treatment structure comprising two mainplot factors (biostimulant and conventional), and four subplots factors; TSP, inoculant, TSP+Inoculant and unamended control arranged in a split-plot design was used for this study. Apart from dry matter which increased by 42%, Pro-soil biostimulant as a stand-alone management practice did not significantly increase agronomic parameters measured in this study. Biostimulant did not have a significant effect on grain yield, nodule weight, nodule number, canopy diameter, and plant height. Application of TSP alone, and in combination with inoculant, significantly increased yield, plant dry matter, nodule weight, nodule number, and dry pod weight. Highest soybean yield was obtained from TSP + Inoculant treatment, averaging 3.6 t ha?1 compared to 1.8 t ha?1 for control. Biostimulant, TSP+Inoculant combination resulted in yields as high as 4 t ha?1. Overall, the results indicate that neither PS-Foundation biostimulant nor rhizobia inoculation can be used as stand-alone management practices to increase soybean yield. However, an integrated application of PS-Foundation biostimulant, TSP, and inoculant could double current soybean yields in Ghana.  相似文献

During the spring and summer of 2001 and in association with the mare reproductive loss syndrome, 22 terminal and 12 clinical cases of equine pericarditis were diagnosed in central Kentucky. Actinobacillus species were the principal isolates from 8 of 10 nontreated, terminally affected and 3 of 10 clinically affected horses. Enterococcus faecalis and Streptococcus zooepidemicus were cultured from the remaining 2 nontreated terminal cases. No viruses were isolated in tissue culture. Nucleic acid of equine herpesvirus-2 was detected in pericardial and tracheal wash fluids of 3 and 1 individuals, respectively. Microscopic alterations in sections of heart and parietal pericardium were consistent with chronic fibrinous bacterial pericarditis. This report confirms a significant role of Actinobacillus species in equine pericarditis and describes an epidemic of this infrequently observed syndrome in the horse.  相似文献

Intensification of crop production in Tonga has resulted in a move to mechanical soil preparation, often with a rotary hoe, and a consequent loss in both chemical physical fertility. An experiment was conducted on a clay loam soil (Typic Argiudoll) on the Forestry Vaini Research Station, Tongatapu Island, Tonga, to investigate the effect of a once‐off application of mulch on yield and quality of watermelon, maize and capsicum grown in rotation over a 1‐yr period. The treatments applied were a nonmulched control, transparent plastic and 200‐mm‐thick applications of locally available coconut sawdust, guinea grass and mature coconut fronds. The fresh fruit yield of watermelon in all the mulch treatments was 7.3–18.1% higher than in the nonmulched control. There was no significant effect of thick vegetative mulch on maize grain dry matter yield; however, the maize yield was significantly lower in the transparent plastic mulch than in the other treatments. The capsicum marketable fruit yield in the following crop was increased by 49–73% in all the vegetative mulch treatments compared to the non‐mulched control. The higher crop yields with the vegetative mulch were attributed to the measured lower soil temperatures and higher soil moisture in these treatments. There was no effect of mulch on soil total N (TN), but soil total C (TC), soil labile C (LC) and the carbon management index (CMI) were increased.  相似文献

The gastric mucosa and the mucosa of the right and left dorsal colon were biopsied in each of the 15 horses, and a total of 45 samples were collected. Mucosal samples were cultured using a Lactobacillus enrichment broth. While numerous Lactobacillus strains were identified, Lactobacillus reuteri was the most common organism identified. Sixteen strains of Lactobacillus reuteri were selected for antimicrobial testing. Salmonella antimicrobial activity was identified in six out of 16 strains tested. Organisms with Salmonella antimicrobial activity were cultured from the stratified squamous epithelium of the stomach and the mucosa of the right and left dorsal colon.  相似文献

Human salmonellosis is a major public health problem worldwide. Infections can pass to humans by contact with contaminated substances in the food chain. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and contamination levels of Salmonella isolated from pork, chicken and beef sold in different types of retail stores in Chiang Mai and Lamphun provinces and to investigate the genetic relatedness among Salmonella isolates in food chains in that area. A total of 360 meat samples from supermarkets, mini‐grocery stores and fresh markets were obtained. Salmonella Rissen and S. Weltevreden were found in all meat sample types and in human cases. The overall prevalence of Salmonella in the chicken, pork and beef samples was 34.17%, 32.50% and 3.33%, respectively. Quantitatively, Salmonella contamination was highest in pork (1.24 log10MPN/g), followed by chicken (1.08 log10MPN/g), and beef (0.75 log10MPN/g). The highest frequency of Salmonella contamination was found at the fresh markets (85.71%), whereas the highest quantity of contamination level was from mini‐grocery stores (1.27 log10MPN/g). The rep‐PCR analysis results revealed that some of the Salmonella from meat samples and human cases were identical clones.  相似文献

During the 2002 and 2003 foaling seasons, Cellulosimicrobium (Cellumonas) cellulans (formerly Oerskovia xanthineolytica) was the principal microorganism isolated from fetal tissues or placentas from cases of equine abortion, premature birth, and term pregnancies. Significant pathologic findings included chronic placentitis and pyogranulomatous pneumonia. In addition, microscopic and macroscopic alterations in the allantochorion from 4 of 7 cases of placentitis were similar to those caused by Crossiella equi and other nocardioform bacteria. This report confirms a causative role of C. cellulans infection in equine abortion.  相似文献

During 2001, central Kentucky experienced acute transient epidemics of early and late fetal losses, pericarditis, and unilateral endophthalmitis, collectively referred to as mare reproductive loss syndrome (MRLS). A toxicokinetic/statistical analysis of experimental and field MRLS data was conducted using accelerated failure time (AFT) analysis of abortions following administration of Eastern tent caterpillars (ETCs; 100 or 50 g/day or 100 g of irradiated caterpillars/day) to late-term pregnant mares. In addition, 2001 late-term fetal loss field data were used in the analysis. Experimental data were fitted by AFT analysis at a high (P <.0001) significance. Times to first abortion ("lag time") and abortion rates were dose dependent. Lag times decreased and abortion rates increased exponentially with dose. Calculated dose x response data curves allow interpretation of abortion data in terms of "intubated ETC equivalents." Analysis suggested that field exposure to ETCs in 2001 in central Kentucky commenced on approximately April 27, was initially equivalent to approximately 5 g of intubated ETCs/day, and increased to approximately 30 g/day at the outbreak peak. This analysis accounts for many aspects of the epidemiology, clinical presentations, and manifestations of MRLS. It allows quantitative interpretation of experimental and field MRLS data and has implications for the basic mechanisms underlying MRLS. The results support suggestions that MRLS is caused by exposure to or ingestion of ETCs. The results also show that high levels of ETC exposure produce intense, focused outbreaks of MRLS, closely linked in time and place to dispersing ETCs, as occurred in central Kentucky in 2001. With less intense exposure, lag time is longer and abortions tend to spread out over time and may occur out of phase with ETC exposure, obscuring both diagnosis of this syndrome and the role of the caterpillars.  相似文献
