Based on a survey of 1820 Ontario pork producers and 16 veterinary members of the Ontario Swine Practitioners Association, condemnation/demerit data, while viewed as potentially valuable, are seldom, if ever, utilized in the provision of herd health programs. We found, however, that: 1) 89.4 percent (SD 1.04 percent) of producers and all veterinarians would use the disease information made available by a computerized system that would collect and report on subclinical and other disease entities detected during the slaughter of hogs; 2) Iesion diagnosis should be as detailed as possible and report on severity of disease; and 3) with the exception of those producers who ship larger numbers of hogs to market for which reports were wanted for each kill, monthly reports would be adequate.

Written comments by producers expressed concerns about confidentiality of individual herd data, costs for the information/service, and veterinary expertise in the interpretation of findings.

Triacontanol (1-triacontanol) applied as a foliar spray at 10(-7) M to 4-day-old, hydroponically grown leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seedlings in a controlled environment increased leaf fresh and dry weight 13% to 20% and root fresh and dry weight 13% to 24% 6 days after application, relative to plants sprayed with water. When applied at 8 as well as 4 days after seeding, triacontanol increased plant fresh and dry weight, leaf area, and mean relative growth rate 12% to 37%. There was no benefit of repeating application of triacontanol in terms of leaf dry weight gain.  相似文献

1. Eight diets (1 to 8) containing respectively 36.8, 30.9, 19.6, 9.7, 5.5, 1.9, 0.96 and 0.48 g of calcium/kg food were each fed for 11 weeks to 24 individually‐caged laying hens (Gallus domesticus) aged 24 weeks. After the experimental period, all birds were returned to a normal diet (34.9 g calcium/kg).

2. Food consumption and egg production decreased as dietary calcium decreased. Shell weight was unaffected on diets 1 and 2; on diet 3 there was slight reduction of shell weight and on diets 4 to 8 the reduction was marked. The proportion of calcium in the shell was affected particularly on diets 7 and 8, though those from diet 5 also showed a decreased shell calcium.

3. The values for calcium intake and calcium loss in the egg showed that, generally, birds restricted calcium loss to less than intake. Only on the very low concentrations of calcium (diets 6, 7 and 8) did output appear to exceed input.

4. The main mechanism for controlling calcium loss involves the regulation of the number of eggs produced, i.e. the number of ovulations. Alterations in shell quality are of less importance with respect to calcium balance, although shell strength was impaired on the more restrictive diets (5 to 8).  相似文献
