A male Queensland koala (Phascolarctos cinereus adustus) at Kanazawa Zoological Gardens (Kanagawa, Japan) exhibited paralytic symptoms in the hind limbs. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass on the left ventral side of the 11th to 13th thoracic vertebrae, and the presence of myelitis or edema in the spinal cord. The koala was under anesthesia during the examination and suddenly developed ventricular fibrillation and died. Necropsy revealed a firm flat ovoid hemorrhagic mass on the vertebrae. Following a microscopic examination including immunohistochemistry, the perivertebral mass was diagnosed as B cell lymphoma. Therefore, neoplastic cell infiltration into the spinal cord may cause paralytic symptoms in the hind limbs.  相似文献

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of estrus synchronization treatments on recipient heifers for embryo transfer (ET). Holstein heifers were separated into the following three groups: (i) an administration of 50 µg GnRH (gonadotropin‐releasing hormone) analog was given to heifers at a random stage of the estrus cycle, followed 7 days later by two administrations of 7.5 mg prostaglandin F2 alfa analog (PG) as control; (ii) another administration of 100 µg GnRH was given to the control group at 48 h after the administration of PG as the second GnRH group; and (iii) an administration of 0.75 mg estradiol benzoate (E2) was given to the control group at 24 h after the administration of PG as the E2 group. Each method caused estrus synchronization. Fresh embryos were nonsurgically transferred into the suitable recipients that had a functional corpora lutea (CL) 7 days after estrus. The E2 group showed a significantly higher (P < 0.01) rate of estrus synchronization (98.9%) at 1–3 days after PG administration and the final pregnancy rate of the E2 group (50.6%) was also significantly higher than the other groups (37.1%, P < 0.05 and 30.9%, P < 0.01, respectively). These findings demonstrate that E2 administration 24 h after PG protocol is effective for estrus synchronization of Holstein heifers, thus improving the productivity of ET.  相似文献

This study has focused on solute diffusing into cell walls in solution-impregnated wood under conditioning, process of evaporating solvent. The amount of the diffusion is known to be determined by the solute diffusivity and the solute-concentration difference between cell walls and cell cavities. Purpose of this paper was to clarify the effect of temperature only on the solute diffusivity that is directionally related to the thermal vibration of the solute molecule. The cross-cut block of hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa), polyethylene glycol (PEG1540), and water was employed as wood sample, solute, and solvent, respectively. The sample impregnated with a 20 mass% solution was conditioned at 20, 35, or 50 °C to finish the solute diffusion evaluated using the dimension of the sample that was conditioned followed by drying in a vacuum. To unify the solute-concentration difference, for all temperatures, the equilibrium moisture content was unified and the solvent-evaporation rate was controlled in three ways during conditioning. The solute diffusivity was higher in order of 35, 50, and 20 °C, which was evaluated by the solute diffusion at the same evaporation rate. It is clarified that the diffusivity increases with increasing the dimension of cell walls rather than with increasing the thermal vibration of solute molecule.  相似文献

Holstein Cows ( n  = 702) from 26 dairy herds in the Tama area of Tokyo, Japan were examined for polymorphisms of the BoLA-DRB3 allele using a PCR-RFLP method. Twenty alleles were observed and allelic frequencies ranged from < 1% to 20.3%. Nine alleles ( DRB3.2 * 24, * 16, * 8, * 23, * 22, * 3, * 11 , * 10 and * 7 in order) constituted 90.0% of all alleles. Somatic cell counts (SCC) were used to classify healthy (group 1), mastitis (group 2) and suspected (group 3) cows. Frequencies of DRB3.2 * 11 and DRB3.2 * 23 were slightly higher in group 1 than in group 2, whereas, frequencies of DRB3.2 * 8 and DRB3.2 * 16 were slightly higher in group 2 than in group 1. However, none of the differences in frequencies between the two groups were statistically significant. For combinations of alleles, frequencies of DRB3.2 * 8/ * 23 ( P  < 0.1) and DRB3.2 * 16/ * 24 ( P  < 0.05) were significantly higher in group 2 than in group 1, and their odds ratios were 2.1, 2.5, respectively. However, there were no significant differences between genotypes in their effects for SCC. On the other hand, frequency of DRB3.2 * 23/ * 23 including combinations of DRB3.2 * 23 with minor alleles was significantly higher in group 1 than in group 2 ( P  < 0.01), and the odds ratio was 0.3. Therefore, it was considered that mastitis resistance or susceptibility of cows may vary with the combination of BoLA-DRB3 alleles.  相似文献

After feeding experiments of Myrica rubra young shoots with 4-[8,9-13C2]coumaric acid, mass spectrometric analyses revealed that the cyclic diarylheptanoids, myricanol and myricanone, were derived from two molecules of 4-coumaric acid. 13C Nuclear magnetic resonance analysis of myricanol isolated after administration of 4-[8,9-13C2]coumaric acid demonstrated that the C-8 and C-9 atoms of 4-coumaric acid are incorporated into C-8, C-9, C-11, and C-12 of the corresponding myricanol. A new method for preserving viable soft X-ray irradiated pollen for the production of seedless watermelons (Citrullus lanatus L.) from diploid plants was established by storing the pollen under N2 at −25°C for 1 year. Pollen stored at 4°C had the ability to germinate until 28 days under all atmospheres tested except O2. However, after storage at this temperature for 3 months it did not germinate in any treatment conditions. Pollen stored at −25°C for 1 year under N2, CO2 or under a vacuum had a germination rate of about 50%. Pollen stored in O2 or in air had a much lower germination rate, less than 20% and 10%, respectively. Thus, it is important to store watermelon pollen at a low temperature when it is being stored for a long time. Nitrogen and CO2 were effective in extending the life of watermelon pollen. On the other hand, it has been demonstrated that the viability of pollen was reduced by storage under O2. The N2 and CO2 are thought to be effective because they are essentially inert to the living pollen. Also, a lot of pollen tubes were observed in a middle portion of an ovary pollinated with pollen stored at −25°C under N2; however, pollen tubes were not observed in ovaries pollinated with pollen stored under a vacuum. It was revealed in 1 year storage experiments that viability of pollen stored under N2 was higher than that stored under a vacuum. Seedless fruits produced with pollen stored at −25°C under N2 had the same characteristics as the control fruit. In this study, 714 cows from 26 dairy herds were reclassified as healthy or mastitic cows on the basis of long‐term somatic cell count (SCC) in milk. Cows with more than three consecutive lactation records of SCC from the first or second to fifth lactation, were selected, and their BoLA‐DRB3 (DRB3) alleles were identified using polymerase chain reaction‐restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR‐RFLP) method. Cows with an SCC of < 200 000 cells/mL in all monthly records were classified as healthy (n = 91). Cows with an SCC of > 300 000 cells/mL in two consecutive tests or four non‐consecutive tests or cows with an SCC of > 500 000 cells/mL in any one test during lactation, regardless of parity, were classified as mastitic (n = 201). Mastitic cows (n = 153) from another 40 herds were considered to be infected if bacteriological testing revealed mastitis pathogens in milk. Their DRB3 alleles were identified using PCR‐sequence‐based typing (PCR‐SBT). The differences in DRB3 allelic frequencies between healthy cows and cows with various degrees of mastitis were re‐investigated. Moreover, the associations of various amino acid motifs in DRB3 alleles with resistance or susceptibility to mastitis pathogens were re‐examined. DRB3.2*8(DRB3*1201) and DRB3.2*16(DRB3*1501) alleles were found to be associated with susceptibility, while DRB3.2*22(DRB3*1101), DRB3.2*23(DRB3*2703), and DRB3.2*24(DRB3*0101) alleles were found to be associated with resistance.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo evaluate perioperative stress-related hormones in isoflurane-anesthetized horses administered infusions of dexmedetomidine alone or with butorphanol or remifentanil, compared with ketamine–morphine.Study designRandomized, prospective, nonblinded clinical study.AnimalsA total of 51 horses undergoing elective surgical procedures.MethodsHorses were premedicated with xylazine, anesthesia induced with ketamine–diazepam and maintained with isoflurane and one of four intravenous infusions. Partial intravenous anesthesia (PIVA) was achieved with dexmedetomidine (1.0 μg kg–1 hour–1; group D; 12 horses); dexmedetomidine (1.0 μg kg–1 hour–1) and butorphanol bolus (0.05 mg kg–1; group DB; 13 horses); dexmedetomidine (1.0 μg kg–1 hour–1) and remifentanil (3.0 μg kg–1 hour–1; group DR; 13 horses); or ketamine (0.6 mg kg–1 hour–1) and morphine (0.15 mg kg–1, 0.1 mg kg–1 hour–1; group KM; 13 horses). Infusions were started postinduction; butorphanol bolus was administered 10 minutes before starting surgery. Blood was collected before drugs were administered (baseline), 10 minutes after ketamine–diazepam, every 30 minutes during surgery and 1 hour after standing. Mean arterial pressure (MAP), pulse rate, end-tidal isoflurane concentration, cortisol, nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), glucose and insulin concentrations were compared using linear mixed models. Significance was assumed when p < 0.05.ResultsWithin D, cortisol was lower at 120–180 minutes from starting surgery compared with baseline. Cortisol was higher in KM than in D at 60 minutes from starting surgery. Within all groups, glucose was higher postinduction (except DR) and 60 minutes from starting surgery, and insulin was lower during anesthesia and higher after standing compared with baseline. After standing, NEFA were higher in KM than in DB. In KM, MAP increased at 40–60 minutes from starting surgery compared with 30 minutes postinduction.Conclusions and clinical relevanceDexmedetomidine suppressed cortisol release more than dexmedetomidine–opioid and ketamine–morphine infusions. Ketamine–morphine PIVA might increase catecholamine activity.  相似文献

Fat tissue produces a variety of secreted proteins (adipocytokines) with important roles in metabolism. We isolated a newly identified adipocytokine, visfatin, that is highly enriched in the visceral fat of both humans and mice and whose expression level in plasma increases during the development of obesity. Visfatin corresponds to a protein identified previously as pre-B cell colony-enhancing factor (PBEF), a 52-kilodalton cytokine expressed in lymphocytes. Visfatin exerted insulin-mimetic effects in cultured cells and lowered plasma glucose levels in mice. Mice heterozygous for a targeted mutation in the visfatin gene had modestly higher levels of plasma glucose relative to wild-type littermates. Surprisingly, visfatin binds to and activates the insulin receptor. Further study of visfatin's physiological role may lead to new insights into glucose homeostasis and/or new therapies for metabolic disorders such as diabetes.  相似文献
