During an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in southern England in 2007, a case-control study was conducted to identify risk factors for infection and to investigate the relative impact of risk factors on transmission between the infected farms. Seven of the eight case farms in the outbreak and 22 control farms participated. Data were collected via questionnaires and subjected to comparative statistical analysis. Case farms were further classified as primary or secondary according to the likely source of infection during the study. On primary case farms, it was plausible that infection had been introduced directly from the original source. On secondary case farms, FMD infection was more likely to have originated from another infected premises. Calving occurred more frequently on case farms than on control farms during the risk period, and the two primary case farms had a larger proportion of youngstock than the other farms. Ultrasound-assisted water extraction was optimized to recover gelling biopolymers and antioxidant compounds from Mastocarpus stellatus. A set of experiments following a Box–Behnken design was proposed to study the influence of extraction time, solid liquid ratio, and ultrasound amplitude on the yield, sulfate content, and thermo-rheological properties (viscoelasticity and gelling temperature) of the carrageenan fraction, as well as the composition (protein and phenolic content) and antiradical capacity of the soluble extracts. Operating at 80 °C and 80 kHz, the models predicted a compromise optimum extraction conditions at ~35 min, solid liquid ratio of ~2 g/100 g, and ultrasound amplitude of ~79%. Under these conditions, 40.3% carrageenan yield was attained and this product presented 46% sulfate and good mechanical properties, a viscoelastic modulus of 741.4 Pa, with the lowest gelling temperatures of 39.4 °C. The carrageenans also exhibited promising antiproliferative properties on selected human cancer cellular lines, A-549, A-2780, HeLa 229, and HT-29 with EC50 under 51.9 μg/mL. The dried soluble extract contained 20.4 mg protein/g, 11.3 mg gallic acid eq/g, and the antiradical potency was equivalent to 59 mg Trolox/g. 相似文献

To specifically study the functional ontogeny of the digestive tract, larvae of Japanese flounder at various developmental stages were injected with liquid solutions using tube feeding in vivo. The survival in the stages tested was on average 93%. The injected solutions were almost completely transferred from the presumptive stomach, or stomach to the midgut within 10 min of injection. The passage to the hindgut in some cases started 10 min after injection and over 90% of the solution had passed from the midgut to the hindgut after 1 h. In most cases the hindgut seemed to be completely empty after 3 h.Two different mixtures of pH indicators with sensitivities in the alkaline (7.5 to 9) and acid (4 to 6) ranges respectively were used for assessment of pH in the various gut segments. The pH of the stomach remained alkaline during the larval period, but had fallen close to 4 during late metamorphosis, an indication of active HCl secretion and progressive stomach differentiation. In mid and late metamorphosing fish a rapid colour change in the pH indicator was observed once it had passed the pyloric sphincter. This demonstrates that there was also active secretion of alkaline fluid, most likely HCO3
–, from the pancreas into the pylorus lumen.A single injection of liquid solution of 14C-FAA showed that assimilation of FAA was high in all stages tested (79.5 ± 7.1%; SD; n=91). A 10-year-old male neutered Boxer presented with recurrence of a mast cell tumor at the right medial canthal area. Following excision including 2 cm margins, the medial one-half of the upper and lower eyelids and the medial canthus were reconstructed using an axial pattern flap based on the cutaneous branch of the superficial temporal artery. The bulbar conjunctiva of the nictitans was preserved and sutured to the medial flap edge, thus creating a conjunctival lining to the deep aspect of the flap, protecting corneal epithelium. Efficiency of superovulatory protocols is affected by the occurrence of reproductive abnormalities, such as the presence of anovulatory follicles. The objective of current study was to assess the incidence and possible causes of anovulatory follicles in superovulated sheep, in order to characterize the endocrine functionality of these follicles in terms of estradiol production and to evaluate their relationship with development of embryos from other follicles. The number and size of all follicles present in the ovaries of 12 sheep treated with a superovulatory FSH step-down treatment was assessed by ultrasonography. On Day 3 after subsequent estrus behaviour, the number of corpora lutea and anovulatory follicles were recorded and the fluid of anovulatory follicles >or=5mm in size was aspirated and assayed for estradiol. At once, embryos were recovered to evaluate their viability. In current study, anovulatory structures averaged 34.6% of the follicles developing to preovulatory sizes. The number of anovulatory follicles was determined by the existence of follicular dominance effects, since they increased with a higher difference in size between the largest and the second largest follicle at the beginning of the superovulatory treatment (P<0.05, r(2)=0.420). Most of the anovulatory follicles showed signs of functionality failures, indicated by a low mean estradiol concentration (9.9+/-1.1 ng/ml). However, a 22.4% of them were highly estrogenic (>200 ng/ml) and their permanence beyond the ovulation was related to a drop in the embryo viability rate (P<0.005), leading to decreased final superovulatory yields. 相似文献

Genetic maps published for elite durum wheat (Triticum turgidum durum Desf.), were mainly related to Italian and North American pools. To provide additional information dedicated to durum elite pool,
a recombinant inbred population (217 RILs) derived form 2 French commercial varieties (Ixos and Primadur), has been mapped
with 529 loci (98 AFLPs, 67 SSRs, 1 ISBP and 363 DArTs). Genetic map spanned a total of 2,082 cM (5.7 cM/marker on average).
Recombination rate variation over the genome was documented through the analysis of six segregating populations representing
a total of 48 RILs × 6, issued from an half diallel design based on four elite lines—Neodur, Ixos, Lloyd and Primadur—including
the 2 previous genitors. Each set of three genetically connected populations (48 RILs × 3) was used to build the consensus
parental maps for each genitor. To construct the four consensus parental maps, marker ordering was determined on 217 RILs
map which was an extended population of the most polymorphic cross (Ixos × Primadur). Sizeable, recombination rate variation
has been observed between the four parental maps both at the marker pair scale and at the linkage group scale. Two of the
parents, Lloyd and Primadur, had strong, opposite effects increasing and decreasing, respectively the recombination rate.
Additional studies are proposed to increase our understanding of this variation, with the identification of environmental
