Three hundred forty-seven cases of lead poisoning in small animals, diagnosed after 1976, were reviewed. The types of treatments used and their outcomes were analyzed. Changes in blood lead concentrations following various treatments, as well as the sources of lead exposure, were also reviewed. The geographic origins of the cases were traced, and demographic factors were studied to determine possible correlates that might explain the regional distribution of cases.  相似文献   

Influence of rearing conditions and respiratory disease on haptoglobin levels in the pig at slaughter

Associations between serum concentrations of haptoglobin, pathological lung lesions indicative of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (EP) or Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (PL) infection at slaughter and previous rearing environment were investigated in 510 pigs (90-100 kg live weight) from 17 farms in England. Haptoglobin concentrations were significantly higher in pigs showing pathological signs of EP infection compared to those without signs of this disease (EP positive median 0.43 mg ml(-1) vs. EP negative median 0.26 mg ml(-1), p<0.01). However, there were no significant associations between serum haptoglobin concentrations and pathological signs of PL. The presence of solid partitions compared with barred or similar open partitions was associated with a decrease of 0.44 mg ml(-1) farm mean haptoglobin concentration, whilst an increase in pen size of 10 m(2) was associated with a decrease of 0.08 mg ml(-1) farm mean haptoglobin concentration. The findings indicate that pathological signs of EP were associated with increased serum haptoglobin at slaughter, which in turn was influenced by components of the farm environment.  相似文献

The development of tourism in New Zealand during the 1990s reflects an intensification of many of the trends that were beginning to emerge in the latter part of the preceding decade, notably in terms of growth and change. The environment for tourism in the 1990s, however, was more fluid and challenging than it had been earlier. Growth continued, despite some major perturbations due to such factors as the Asian economic crisis. The industry proved its resilience and ability to adapt to changing conditions, institutional restructuring occurred and tourism in New Zealand generally became more diverse and complex. Increasing attention, but not much action, was directed at some of the externalities that the growth of tourism was generating.  相似文献

Defensive genes in plants can be activated by several different types of nonpeptide signaling molecules. An endogenous polypeptide, consisting of 18 amino acids, was isolated from tomato leaves and was able at very low concentrations to induce the synthesis of two wound-inducible proteinase inhibitor proteins when supplied to young tomato plants. The sequence of the polypeptide was determined, and an identical polypeptide was synthesized that possessed full inducing activity. These data establish that a polypeptide factor can initiate signal transduction to regulate the synthesis of defensive proteins in plant tissues.  相似文献   

Gibberellins: a phytohormonal basis for heterosis in maize

Four commercially important maize parental inbreds and their 12 F(1) hybrids were studied to investigate the role of the phytohormone gibberellin (GA) in the regulation of heterosis (hybrid vigor). All hybrids grew faster than any inbred. In contrast, all inbreds showed a greater promotion of shoot growth after the exogenous application of GA(3). Concentrations of endogenous GA(1), the biological effector for shoot growth in maize, and GA(19), a precursor of GA(1), were measured in apical meristematic shoot cylinders for three of the inbreds and their hybrids by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with selected ion monitoring; deuterated GAs were used as quantitative internal standards. In 34 of 36 comparisons, hybrids contained higher concentrations of endogenous GAs than their parental inbreds. Preferential growth acceleration of the inbreds by exogenous GA(3) indicates that a deficiency of endogenous GA limits the growth of the inbreds and is thus a cause of inbreeding depression. Conversely, the increased endogenous concentration of GA in the hybrids could provide a phytohormonal basis for heterosis for shoot growth.  相似文献

Protons and helium nuclei are the most abundant components of the cosmic radiation. Precise measurements of their fluxes are needed to understand the acceleration and subsequent propagation of cosmic rays in our Galaxy. We report precision measurements of the proton and helium spectra in the rigidity range 1 gigavolt to 1.2 teravolts performed by the satellite-borne experiment PAMELA (payload for antimatter matter exploration and light-nuclei astrophysics). We find that the spectral shapes of these two species are different and cannot be described well by a single power law. These data challenge the current paradigm of cosmic-ray acceleration in supernova remnants followed by diffusive propagation in the Galaxy. More complex processes of acceleration and propagation of cosmic rays are required to explain the spectral structures observed in our data.  相似文献   

Haemophilia A in the cocker spaniel: a case report

A four-year-old entire male cocker spaniel was presented with a history of dyspnoea due to tracheal stenosis. As part of the clinical approach, a coagulation screening profile revealed moderately reduced levels of Factor VIII procoagulant activity (VIII: C), but elevated factor VHI-related antigen levels (VIIIR: Ag). A diagnosis of haemophilia A (classic haemophilia) was made and the tracheal stenosis attributed to a mediastinal haematoma. The dyspnoea was alleviated by the surgical insertion of a tracheostomy tube and the dog was treated with citrated whole blood and fresh-frozen canine plasma. Response to treatment was excellent and follow-up radiography three months later revealed resolution of the tracheal stenosis.  相似文献

Physiological effects of etorphine, acepromazine and xylazine in the scimitar horned oryx (Oryx dammah)

Scimitar horned oryx (Oryx dammah), kept under confined and unconfined conditions were immobilised with etorphine in combination with acepromazine or xylazine or both, and with xylazine alone. Both groups of animals were successfully sedated with etorphine and xylzine, with or without acepromazine, although hypothermia and mild hypoxaemia and a fall in packed cell volume were frequently noted. Xylazine alone produced a dose dependent degree of sedation in semitame subadult animals kept in confinement, but only slight depression in their wild, unconfined counterparts. If xylazine was not included in the immobilising mixture induction was traumatic and full sedation not achieved. Heart rates and arterial pressures (systemic and pulmonary) were also monitored but no remarkable changes were noted. The only abnormalities in blood biochemistry were raised aspartate transminase and creatine kinase. Ruminal regurgitation could be a major problem if endotracheal intubation was not achieved early in the procedure.  相似文献
