In recent years, the Internet has become an effective and accessible delivery mechanism for distance education. In 2003, 81% of all institutions of higher education offered at least one fully online or hybrid course. By 2005, the proportion of institutions that listed online education as important to their long-term goals had increased by 8%. This growth in available online courses and their increased convenience and flexibility have stimulated dramatic increases in enrollment in online programs, including the Veterinary Technology Distance Learning Program (VT-DLP) at Purdue University. Regardless of the obvious benefits, distance learning (DL) can be frustrating for the learners if course developers are unable to merge their knowledge about the learners, the process of instructional design, and the appropriate uses of technology and interactivity options into effective course designs. This article describes strategies that we have used to increase students' learning of physiology content in an online environment. While some of these are similar, if not identical, to strategies that might be used in a face-to-face (f2f) environment (e.g., case studies, videos, concept maps), additional strategies (e.g., animations, virtual microscopy) are needed to replace or supplement what might normally occur in a f2f course. We describe how we have addressed students' need for instructional interaction, specifically in the context of two foundational physiology courses that occur early in the VT-DLP. Although the teaching and learning strategies we have used have led to increasingly high levels of interaction, there is an ongoing need to evaluate these strategies to determine their impact on students' learning of physiology content, their development of problem-solving skills, and their retention of information.  相似文献

The antifeedant, oviposition deterrent, and toxic effects of dialkoxybenzene minilibraries and of disubstituted cyclopentene minilibraries (i.e., consisting of four to five compounds) along with their pure constituent compounds were assessed against third instar larvae and adults of the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni, in laboratory bioassays in a search for new insect control agents. These compounds mimic naturally occurring bioactive odorants and tastants and are relatively easily prepared from commodity chemicals. Most of these libraries strongly deterred larval feeding, with some exhibiting strong toxic and oviposition deterrent effects as well. Our results suggest some structure-function relationships within these libraries. Replacement of a methyl group with larger alkyl substituents increased the feeding deterrent effects in most cases. The presence of a free hydroxyl group, irrespective of the carbon framework or alkyl substituent, served to reduce feeding deterrent effects in all series of compounds. Further, exceeding a certain group size also generally had a detrimental effect. This information will be useful in designing new insect control agents for agriculture. Some of these libraries and compounds may have potential for development as commercial insecticides.  相似文献

Agro-ecosystems support a vast array of non-native insects, but the potential of these insects to invade and degrade natural ecosystems is largely unknown. Plutella xylostella L. (diamondback moth) is a global agricultural pest that is not native to North America. It feeds on members of the Brassicaceae family, including the endangered Braya longii (Fernald) (Long’s braya) and threatened B. fernaldii (Abbe) (Fernald’s braya) which are endemic to the limestone barrens of Newfoundland, Canada. The immigration of P. xylostella from overwintering sites in the United States to this rare natural ecosystem was monitored with pheromone traps between 2003 and 2005. After their mass immigration in early summer, females lay eggs on an average of 30% of the B. longii and 16% of the B. fernaldii population. Larval feeding reduces the mean seed output of infested plants by 60%, from 10.8 to 4.3 seeds/fruit, and damages 26% of their leaves. There are residual and long-term effects of this herbivory, as many dead braya had higher numbers of eggs, and subsequent leaf and fruit damage one to three years before they died. High summer air temperatures and low precipitation allowed this pest to become multivoltine, resulting in additive damage to braya individuals. Presently, insufficient attention is directed to the impacts of agricultural pests on native ecosystems and rare host plants; hence, there is a need for both the conservation and agricultural communities to cooperate in mitigating the impacts of these pests on native biodiversity.  相似文献

Claviceps purpurea infects the seed heads of cereal grains and grasses and produces ergopeptine alkaloids that cause hyperthermia and agalactia in cattle during periods of heat stress. A field experiment was undertaken to examine the effects of ergopeptine alkaloids found in barley on thermal status of dairy cattle during periods of heat stress. Production end points were also measured to identify the effect of the change in thermal status. Contaminated barley screenings containing known levels of ergopeptine alkaloids were fed to lactating Holstein cattle (10 microg total ergopeptine alkaloids/kg BW/day) for 10 days during summer heat stress. Air temperature increased 14.4 C during the first 8 days of treatment and then declined the same during the last 2 days. Extreme daily values for rectal temperature and respiration rate, using averages of all animals, showed maximum increases of 2.3 C and 56.8 breaths/minute, respectively, during this period. Group afternoon milk production decreased 2 kg/day during the heat stress period, with no measurable change in feed intake. A greater level of hyperthermia occurred in cattle consuming the diet with ergopeptine alkaloids, with only marginal symptoms of ergot toxicosis reflected in feed intake and milk production. Therefore, the ergopeptine alkaloid dose used in this study represents a level for minimal induction of the ergot toxicity response.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether cattle exposed to heat stress alone or heat stress while consuming endophyte-infected fescue (EIF) have lower whole-blood (WB) concentrations of glutathione (GSH). ANIMALS: 10 Simmental cows. PROCEDURE: Cows were sequentially exposed to thermoneutral (TN; 2 weeks; 18 C, 50% relative humidity [RH]), heat stress (HS; 2 weeks; alternating 4-hour intervals at 26 and 33 C; 50% RH), and heat stress while consuming EIF (10 microg of ergovaline/kg/d; 2 weeks, HS + EIF). Blood samples were collected after each period and tested for GSH and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) concentrations. RESULTS: Feed consumption was similar when data were analyzed for time points at which WB concentrations of GSH or GSSG were determined. However, significant effects of treatment, cow, days exposed to heat, cow-by-treatment interaction, and treatment-by-days exposed to heat interaction were detected when data were considered simultaneously. Mean +/- SD hematocrit for TN, HS, and HS + EIF were 35.3+/-3, 33.3+/-2, and 37.1+/-3%, respectively. Mean WBGSH concentrations for TN, HS, and HS + EIF were 3.2+/-0.65, 2.7+/-0.62, and 2.4+/-0.56 mmol/L of RBC, respectively. Reduced WBGSH concentrations were associated with reduced feed intake during the later part of each heat period. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Decreased GSH and increased GSSG concentrations were evident during heat stress, especially when cattle consumed EIF These were associated with reduced feed intake during heat stress. Heat stress, reductions in feed intake, and thermoregulatory effects of EIF may induce oxidative stress in cattle.  相似文献
