Cell extracts that were prepared from blood mononuclear leukocytes from 66 samples obtained from 6 clinically normal calves contained mean 2',5'-oligoadenylate (2',5'-oligo[A]) synthetase activity sufficient to synthesize 186 +/- 82 pmol of 2',5'-oligo(A)/h/10(6) cells. Calves had no measurable serum interferon (IFN) activity. Five calves were given IM injections of 10(4), 10(5), 5 x 10(5), 10(6), and 10(7) U of bovine IFN-alpha 1/kg of body weight at 2-week intervals. Five dosing sequences were used with a 5 x 5 Latin square design so that each calf received each dose once. Activity of 2',5'-oligo(A) synthetase increased at 24 hours in response to all dosages of IFN and then declined following first-order kinetics, with an apparent half-life (t1/2) of 2.1 +/- 0.5 days. The area under the concentration-time curve for 2',5'-oligo(A) synthetase increased with dose of IFN more rapidly than did peak response. Serum IFN that was measured at 1-day intervals following administration of IFN was consistently measurable only at dosages above 10(6) U of IFN/kg. The t1/2 for circulating IFN was 12.4 +/- 1.0 hours. Over all dosages, increases in 2',5'-oligo(A) synthetase activity were measurable for 3.5 days longer than were increases in IFN following IM injection of IFN. None of the calves developed detectable anti-IFN antibodies.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine whether evidence could be obtained of foetal infection with Leptospira interrogans serovar hardjo in aborted foetuses collected from dairy farms. Material from 197 abortions occurring over a wide area of Victoria was collected over 3 years. None of 195 foetal kidney cultures or 7 cultures from membranes was positive for leptospiral organisms. Immunogold silver staining for leptospires was performed on sections of kidneys, lungs or heart from 156 foetuses, with negative results. Evidence of transient leptospiral infection in 11 of 123 foetuses was obtained by foetal heart blood serology. Two isolates of L. interrogans serovar hardjo were obtained from the urine of milking cows. These strains were examined by restriction endonuclease analysis and both were shown to be of the genotype Hardjobovis, as have been all Australian isolates studied so far. It appears that foetal infection with serovar hardjo is not associated with any substantial proportion of bovine abortions in Victoria, in contrast to the situation in Northern Ireland. The apparent absence from Victoria of the pathogenic genotype Hardjoprajitno is a possible explanation.  相似文献

Budgerigars ( Melopsittacus undulatus ) from two different breeding colonies were found to have Giardia infection. Light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and in-vitro and in-vivo studies confirmed the species was G psittaci . Chicks were clinically affected and showed signs of retarded growth, dehydration and diarrhoea. The faeces of adult birds treated with metronidazole in drinking water were negative for Giardia 5 days after treatment. Megabacteria were also found in adult birds but were not treated. This study extends the known host range for Giardia in Australia to include budgerigars.  相似文献

通过试验研究对注射用头孢呋辛钠的安全性进行评价。采用豚鼠和家兔分别进行本品的全身用药过敏性、血管和肌肉局部刺激性及家兔红细胞体外溶血性试验研究。结果显示本品对豚鼠无明显全身过敏性、静脉注射对家兔耳缘静脉无明显局部刺激性、对家兔肌肉注射给药无明显局部刺激性、对家兔红细胞无明显体外溶血性。表明本品的各项安全性均良好,为实际应用提供了有力依据。  相似文献

Infestations of larval and nymphal Ixodes spp. were identified in 16 dogs and 16 cats from several small animal clinics in Sydney. Cases occurred in late summer or autumn, peaking in February, and were seasonally recurrent in some individuals. Clinical signs of infestation included a papular dermatitis and irritation or pruritus that ranged from severe to mild or absent. The distribution of tick attachment tended to be cranial and ventral, with the face, legs, axillae and ventrum the most commonly affected sites. The estimated number of ticks in each infestation varied from less than 10 to more than 100. Basic morphological examination of ticks collected from affected animals was performed by attending veterinarians using light microscopy, and larvae and nymphs belonging to the Ixodes genus were identified. Ticks collected from 17 animals and submitted to the Department of Medical Entomology, Westmead Hospital were putatively identified as I. trichosuri (57%) and I. holocyclus (25%) larvae. Histopathological samples of attachment sites collected from three dogs and one cat were characterised by ticks attached in well-demarcated invaginations of the skin ('tick craters') associated with variable epidermal and/or dermal necrosis, focal eosinophilic intraspinous pustules, mild to marked eosinophilic and neutrophilic, superficial to deep, dermal perivascular to interstitial inflammation, and moderate to marked superficial dermal oedema and red cell extravasation. A range of topical acaricidal preparations, including fipronil and synthetic pyrethroids, were used for treatment.  相似文献

Two hundred beef carcasses were randomly selected by dental classification (zero, two, four, six, or eight permanent incisors) from a population of 11,136 carcasses harvested by a large commercial beef processor. Warner-Bratzler shear force and trained sensory panel evaluations of longissimus thoracis steaks as well as cooking and carcass traits were evaluated for differences among dental classes. No differences in Warner-Bratzler shear force (P = 0.60), sensory panel evaluations (P = 0.64) for tenderness, or percentage of total cooking loss (P = 0.73) were found among the five dental classes. Longissimus muscle color, USDA marbling score, hot carcass weight, adjusted fat thickness, longissimus muscle area, and USDA yield grade did not differ among the five dental classes. A significant dental classification x sex interaction indicated that heifers advanced in skeletal and overall maturity at a much faster rate than steers. An increase of intramuscular fat was associated (P < 0.05) with decreased shear force (r = -0.31), whereas darkening of the lean (r = 0.16), advancing lean maturity (r = 0.21), and increased evaporative cooking loss (r = 0.39) were associated (P < 0.05) with increased shear force values. Warner-Bratzler shear force measurements were not related to sensory panel overall tenderness scores. Carcass traits accounted for a relatively small proportion of the variation in tenderness of longissimus steaks, and dental classification was not related to tenderness.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between respiratory tract infection with bovine coronavirus (BCV), treatment for respiratory tract disease, pulmonary lesions at slaughter, and average daily gain in cattle in feedlots. ANIMALS: 837 calves in feedlots in Ohio and Texas. PROCEDURE: Nasal swab specimens were obtained from cattle at arrival in a feedlot (day 0) and at various times during the initial 28 days after arrival. Specimens were tested for BCV, using an antigen-capture ELISA. Serum samples were obtained at arrival and again 28 days after arrival and tested for antibodies to BCV, using an antibody-detection ELISA. Information was collected regarding treatment for cattle with respiratory tract disease and average daily gain during the feeding period. Pulmonary lesions were evaluated at slaughter. RESULTS: Cattle shedding BCV from the nasal cavity and developing an antibody response against BCV were 1.6 times more likely to require treatment for respiratory tract disease than cattle that did not shed the virus or develop an immune response against BCV. Additionally, cattle that shed BCV from the nasal cavity were 2.2 times more likely to have pulmonary lesions at slaughter than cattle that did not shed the virus. The BCV shedding or seroconversion status did not affect average daily gain. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Bovine coronavirus infects feedlot cattle and is associated with an increased risk for cattle developing respiratory tract disease and pulmonary lesions. Development of appropriate control measures could help reduce the incidence of respiratory tract disease.  相似文献
