Mantle peridotites drilled from the Izu-Bonin-Mariana forearc have unradiogenic 187Os/188Os ratios (0.1193 to 0.1273), which give Proterozoic model ages of 820 to 1230 million years ago. If these peridotites are residues from magmatism during the initiation of subduction 40 to 48 million years ago, then the mantle that melted was much more depleted in incompatible elements than the source of mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB). This result indicates that osmium isotopes record information about ancient melting events in the convecting upper mantle not recorded by incompatible lithophile isotope tracers. Subduction zones may be a graveyard for ancient depleted mantle material, and portions of the convecting upper mantle may be less radiogenic in osmium isotopes than previously recognized.  相似文献

Forty‐nine accessions used in the Germplasm Enhancement of Maize (GEM) project, two commercial hybrids (Pioneer Brand Hybrids 3394 and 3489), and two Corn Belt inbreds (B73 and Mo17) were evaluated for compositional, physical, and wet‐milling properties. GEM accessions had lower starch contents (65.9–69.1% vs. a mean of 72.2% for the commercial hybrids) and greater protein contents (12.0–14.4% vs. a mean of 8.2% for the commercial hybrids) than did the improved Corn Belt material. Absolute densities were consistently higher for the GEM accessions compared with the commercial hybrids (1.320 vs. 1.265 g/cm3, respectively). The wet‐milling characteristics of the GEM accessions were not nearly as good as for the commercial hybrids. Mean starch yields were only 54.3% for the GEM accessions versus 64.8% for the commercial hybrids. Residual protein levels in the starches recovered from the GEM accessions were much greater (0.45–2.03%) than for commercial corn hybrids (<0.3%).  相似文献

The presentation of approximately 40 dairy cows affected with left-side displacement of the abomasum (LDA) per annum in a cattle practice in East Gippsland, Victoria provided an opportunity to conduct a survey and case-control study of the disease in a grazing environment. The study, involving 37 dairy cows at pasture, revealed significant differences from the pattern of the disease occurring in the northern hemisphere where cows in older age groups, of larger frame size, higher production and fed high grain rations are at increased risk. Affected cows were diagnosed over a 10-month period and represented approximately 0.06% of the dairy cow population. Most cases were diagnosed in the early lactation period. Evidence for a genetic predisposition was suggested by the discovery that one sire generated a disproportionately large number (9) of the cows with LDA. Although affected cows were average producers in their herds, being a member of a high-producing herd was a significant risk factor.  相似文献

Phenotypic variances for linear and transformed weight traits were partitioned into residual, direct genetic (D) and maternal genetic (M) components using REML techniques with American Simmental Association data from calves born 1969 to 1985. Variance components were estimated separately from subclasses defined by sex (male, female) and percent Simmental (50, greater than or equal to 75). The model included fixed effects of contemporary group and age-of-dam (less than 3, 3 to 5, greater than 5 yr). Additive relationships among sires and maternal grandsires were included. Results follow for a sire-maternal grandsire model for greater than or equal to 75% Simmental untransformed data based on 143,280 male and 281,805 female weaning weights (WW) representing 4,763 and 7,406 sires, respectively. Female results are bracketed. For computational simplification, 47,650 [30,909] postweaning gain (PW) records were included in the analysis only for 114,404 [182,255] calves with birth weight (BW). Phenotypic standard deviations (kg) were: BW, 4.5 [4.1]; WW, 26.9 [23.2]; and PW, 25.9 [19.9]. Heritabilities were: BWD, .40 [.45]; WWD, .32 [.39]; PWD, .26 [.32]; BWM, .13 [.15]; WWM, .20 [.16]; and PWM, .01 [.01]. These heritabilities are higher than previously used for genetic evaluations in this breed. Moderate and positive correlations .26 to .50, existed between direct effects and were similar for both sexes. Direct and maternal effects on the same trait were correlated negatively: BW, -.45 [-.31]; and WW, -.27 [-.34]. Genetic correlation between BWM and WWM was .53 [.49]. First-cross progeny exhibited less genetic and residual variation and had lower heritabilities than Simmental calves of higher percent. Correlations between sire evaluations on the subsets were consistent with those expected given a perfect genetic correlation between traits for each sex and percent Simmental. Logarithmic transformed records were no more homogeneous than untransformed records.  相似文献

Data from a selection experiment conducted with sheep at Massey University, New Zealand, were analyzed to obtain an evaluation of selection response. Selection was for heavy 14-mo greasy fleece weight. Approximately seven generations of selection were represented in the data. Three estimates of genetic superiority of the selected line to the control line were obtained. All three estimates were obtained from a mixed model evaluation using the individual animal model for predicting breeding values from own and relatives' records. The estimators were 1) deviation of selected line predicted yearly phenotypes from control line predicted yearly phenotypes, 2) deviation of the predicted yearly phenotype for the selected line from the year estimate in the control line and 3) the mean yearly breeding value from the analysis of the selected line only. The realized heritability using the first approach was .20. However, the control line was found to have a slight positive drift; hence, this estimate was biased downward. Using Approach 2, accounting for drift, the realized heritability was .23. The same realized heritability, .23, was obtained from an analysis of the selected line ignoring the control (Approach 3), when a prior heritability of .30 was assumed for the mixed model evaluation. The estimate of genetic trend from predicted breeding values in the latter approach is, however, quite dependent on the assumed heritability.  相似文献

The interferon system is part of the innate immune system in vertebrates. It represents the first line of host defence against viral infections. Virus entry triggers intracellular signalling pathways which lead to the secretion of soluble factors such as interferons and other cytokines. Interferons signal to neighbouring cells that a viral infection has occurred and induce an "antiviral state" resulting in inhibition of virus replication. The first recombinant interferons were produced in the 1980ies and were considered to be a major breakthrough. At present, interferons are routinely used in the therapy of certain viral and autoimmune diseases as well as for neoplastic disorders in man. In 2001 the first interferon preparation for veterinary use was licensed in the European Union. This review summarises the molecular mechanisms of the interferon system and the viral counteractions. The current type I interferon therapies in humans are described and an overview of recent clinical studies in veterinary medicine, including cat, dog, horse, cow, sheep, pig, and poultry, is given. We review the potential application of interferons and arguments in favor or against its therapeutic use in veterinary medicine.  相似文献

Many scientists have expended efforts to determine what regulates development of an indifferent gonad into either a testis or ovary. Expression of Sry and upregulation of Sox9 are factors that initiate formation of the testis-specific pathway to allow for both sex-specific vasculature and seminiferous cord formation. Migration of mesonephric precursors of peritubular myoid cells and endothelial cells into the differentiating testis is a critical step in formation of both of these structures. Furthermore, these events appear to be initiated downstream from Sry expression. Sertoli cell secretion of growth factors acts to attract these mesonephric cells. One hypothesis is that a growth factor specific for these cell linages act in concert to coordinate migration of both peritubular and endothelial cells. A second hypothesis is that several growth factors stimulate migration and differentiation of mesonephric 'stem-like' cells to result in migration and differentiation into several different cell lineages. While the specific mechanism is unclear, several growth factors have been implicated in the initiation of mesonephric cell migration. This review will focus on the proposed mechanisms of a growth factor, Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor, and how different angiogenic and inhibitory isoforms from this single gene may aid in development of testis-specific vascular development.  相似文献

The role of melatonin as a protective neurohormone against restoring cyclicity in summer anoestrous animals in photoperiod species has gained wider acceptance. This study was designed to uncover the evidence the slow‐release melatonin (MLT) has on initiation of ovarian cyclicity and conception rate (CR) in summer anoestrous buffaloes. Thus, buffaloes diagnosed as summer anoestrous (absence of overt signs of oestrus, concurrent rectal examination and radioimmunoassay for serum progesterone at 10 days interval) were grouped as untreated (Group I, sterilized corn oil, n = 8) and treated (Group II, single subcutaneous injection of MLT @18 mg/50 kg bwt in sterilized corn oil, n = 20). Animals treated and detected in oestrus were artificially inseminated (AI) followed by division into Group III (second dose of MLT on 5th day post‐AI, n = 8) and Group IV (no melatonin administration, n = 10). Blood samples were collected at 4 days interval for estimation of serum MLT, progesterone and oestrogen using radioimmunoassay kit. Mean oestrous induction rate (OIR), oestrous induction interval (OII), interoestrous interval (IOI) and CR were estimated. Compared to control, concentration of melatonin was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in treated group ranging from 14.34 ± 1.72 to 412.31 ± 14.47 pg/ml whereas other two hormones did not show any concentration difference. Melatonin‐administered buffaloes showed significantly (p < 0.05) higher (90%) OIR with OII of 18.06 ± 1.57 days. Results showed improvement in conception rate in buffaloes administered with post‐insemination melatonin. It can be concluded from the study that slow‐release melatonin supplementation restored cyclicity in summer anoestrous animals resulting in improvement in conception rate in buffaloes.  相似文献

A 12-week-old female alpaca cria weighing 10 kg presented with a 2-month history of left hindlimb lameness associated with osteomyelitis and sequestration of the shaft and wing of the left ilium. The affected segment of the ilium was surgically removed. Bacteriological culture revealed a small number of mixed aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. The cria recovered well, was discharged from the hospital 8 days after surgery and was paddock sound without complications 8 months later. Osteomyelitis and sequestration of long bones has been reported in alpacas, but further investigation is necessary to define the prevalence and pathogenesis and to develop specific recommendations for prevention and treatment.  相似文献
