Comparative Earth History and Late Permian Mass Extinction   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
The repeated association during the late Neoproterozoic Era of large carbon-isotopic excursions, continental glaciation, and stratigraphically anomalous carbonate precipitation provides a framework for interpreting the reprise of these conditions on the Late Permian Earth. A paleoceanographic model that was developed to explain these stratigraphically linked phenomena suggests that the overturn of anoxic deep oceans during the Late Permian introduced high concentrations of carbon dioxide into surficial environments. The predicted physiological and climatic consequences for marine and terrestrial organisms are in good accord with the observed timing and selectivity of Late Permian mass extinction.  相似文献

Spinning disc-atomizers are widely used in seed-dressing machines. They not only give an initial velocity to the droplet but deliver air as well, consequently the droplet enters a moving medium. Computer analysis shows the influence of this mutual motion in the case of linear, parabolic and hyperbolic air velocity decrease. The moving air exerts a significant effect on the ideal encounter zone of liquid and seed. This effect should be taken into consideration in designing the dressing chamber of seed treatment machinery.  相似文献

The correlation between the inhibition of hatching of Haemonchus contortus eggs and inhibition of mammalian tubulin polymerisation by benzimidazole carbamates has been investigated. The hatching process was observed to be independent of the biomass (eggs plus debris) over a 6-fold range and the early (E1-E3) stages of egg development, but was dependent on the concentration of co-solvent (DMSO) and time of incubation. Benzimidazole carbamates with strong inhibitory activity against mammalian tubulin were potent inhibitors of egg hatch, while non-inhibitors failed to prevent hatching. It is postulated that the primary mode of action of these drugs on nematode eggs is the inhibition of microtubule-dependent processes within the developing egg. The implications and limitations of this correlation are discussed.  相似文献

Anthelmintic control of Ostertagia ostertagi in cattle presents some special problems because the arrested larval stage (hypobiotic EL4) tolerates all of the older anthelmintics. The only anthelmintics on the North American market that are effective against this stage as well as the adult and developing stages are ivermectin and fenbendazole. In addition to these, the newer broad-spectrum benzimidazoles and probenzimidazoles, albendazole, febantel, netobimin and oxfendazole, are effective and available in other countries. These anthelmintics can be used for prophylaxis of Type II ostertagiasis. The older anthelmintics, levamisole, morantel tartrate, thiabendazole, coumaphos, haloxon and phenothiazine, are effective against the adults and to some extent the developing stages of O. ostertagi so that they can be used to treat Type I ostertagiasis. They can also be used to prevent incoming larvae from establishing if they are administered continuously over a long period of time. This is possible with long term in-feed administration or by the use of the morantel slow release bolus. In cooler temperature regions, where cattle are housed over the winter, this bolus is given at turnout to remove any parasites in the animals and to kill incoming larvae for 60-90 days. This can prevent the build up of significant infective larvae on pasture so that very few arrested L4 larvae accumulate in the summer/autumn, effectively preventing Type II ostertagiasis from occurring later. The use of ivermectin and the newer benzimidazoles in intermittent or slow release devices should prove highly effective in the control of Type I and II ostertagiasis, as well as of subclinical ostertagiasis. To achieve maximum economic benefit, the use of anthelmintics should be based on sound epidemiological considerations, so that stock are not rapidly reinfected after treatment.  相似文献

Five groups of Tswana-cross castrated male cattle between 20 and 30 months of age (a total of 158 animals) were transported from a ranch in a heartwater-free area of south Botswana to a feedlot near Gaborone in the east of Botswana where heartwater is endemic. On arrival, one group was vaccinated intravenously with the Onderstepoort sheep blood heartwater vaccine, one group was vaccinated intravenously with the new Onderstepoort tick-derived heartwater vaccine and a third group was vaccinated subcutaneously with this tick-derived vaccine. Vaccine reactions were blocked with long acting oxytetracycline on the first day of fever. A fourth group had a series of injections of long acting oxytetracycline on days 0, 7, 14 and 21 after arrival, and a fifth served as untreated controls. The animals remained at the feedlot for 65 days during which time they faced a low level of challenge by Amblyomma hebraeum ticks. None contracted heartwater and so they were then challenged, together with a further group of control cattle, with a dose of the sheep blood vaccine. Some animals in all groups had severe heartwater reactions and died despite therapy, but 76.7 per cent, 64.5 per cent and 74.3 per cent of the cattle in the blood vaccine, intravenous tick vaccine and long acting oxytetracycline groups respectively were resistant to challenge, compared with 48.3 per cent of the subcutaneous tick vaccine group and 36.4 per cent of the controls. It was concluded that intravenous vaccination of susceptible adult cattle with either the blood or the tick-derived vaccine needs careful monitoring in the month after vaccination and does not necessarily result in immune animals.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Radiolabelled fenbendazole (FBZ) and thiabendazole (TBZ) were administered into the rumen or abomassum of sheep previously infected with benzimidazole-susceptible or resistant Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis. Plasma radioactivity was determined for 12 hours following anthelmintic administration and at the end of this time the incorporation of radiolabel into the parasites was determined.Incorporation of radiolabel from FBZ was significantly greater in susceptible than in resistant worms. However, with TBZ there was no significant difference. There were no significant differences in the incorporation between H. contortus and T. colubriformis. Incorporation of TBZ was greater than FBZ in the worms except after ruminal administration to sheep showing clinical parasitism resulting from infection with benzimidazole- susceptible worms. TBZ was administered at five times the dose rate as FBZ, and thus a lower proportion of the administered TBZ than FBZ was incorporated.With the exception of incorporation of TBZ by resistant worms, the route of administration had a major effect on incorporation by the parasites and on plasma levels. Based on plasma levels, TBZ appeared to be rapidly absorbed from both the rumen and abomasum, whereas FBZ was less readily absorbed from the rumen with the rate of absorption being markedly greater if FBZ was administered directly into the abomasum. The findings suggest that the rumen may act as a reservoir of FBZ prolonging the period of high anthelmintic concentration in the host. This may contribute to the high efficacy of this anthelmintic.  相似文献

SUMMARY: Vascular access ports were surgically placed, first in rabbits maintained under laboratory conditions, and then in koalas maintained in a wildlife park. The ports remained patent for 9 months in rabbits and for up to 13 months in the koalas and were removed successfully. They allowed collection of blood samples without assistance or disturbance in koalas, and without stress as reflected by plasma cortisol concentration. The use of retention rings on the cannula tubing is recommended.  相似文献

Resistance to benzimidazole anthelmintics in the nematode Haemonchus contortus has been correlated with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on the β-tubulin isotype 1 gene. Three mutations can be used as markers for the detection of resistance, namely SNPs at position 200 and 167 (both TTC to TAC) or at position 198 (GAA to GCA). Harbouring a resistance genotype at any one of these codons can lead to a resistant phenotype. Our objective in this study was to analyse the frequencies of the three mutations when the albendazole dose rate and selection pressure were increased. We used adult H. contortus (males and females) collected directly from the abomasum of untreated lambs, or lambs treated with the manufacturer's recommended dose rate (5mg/kg), three times the recommended dose rate (15 mg/kg), or nine times the recommended dose rate (45 mg/kg). Anthelmintic efficacy was determined by worm and egg count reductions. For the surviving worms of the four treatment groups, the frequencies of each resistance SNP at codons 167, 200 and 198 were measured using pyrosequencing. Our results showed a strong relationship between an increasing dose rate and an increase in the frequency of the (TAC)(200) SNP and a decrease in the (TAC)(167) SNP. All worms genotyped were GAA at codon 198.  相似文献
