The distribution and severity of lesions in the skeletal muscles of 37 Merino sheep with congenital progressive muscular dystrophy (CPMD) are described. An explanation for the clinical signs is offered on the basis of functional defects in regional muscle groups. Lesions in the extensors of the hip, stifle and hock joints and flexors of the digits are primarily responsible for the progressive abnormality of hind limb gait that is characteristic of the clinical syndrome. Lesions in extensors of the elbow and flexors of the shoulder, carpus and digits affected fore limb function in advanced cases. The tendency for some affected sheep to develop ruminal tympany is probably caused by lesions in the diaphragmatic crus. Clinically affected sheep had higher resting and post-exercise concentrations of serum creatine phosphokinase and lactic dehydrogenase than unaffected control sheep. The rise in serum creatine phosphokinase after exercise was greater in affected sheep than in controls. Myotonia was not demonstrated in electromyographic studies in one sheep.  相似文献

Objective To derive a severity score for spontaneous canine acute pancreatitis applicable to general practice.
Design Cohort study of canine pancreatitis cases.
Procedure Cases (n = 68) of spontaneous canine acute pancreatitis presented to general practitioners were identified among accessions to Veterinary Pathology Services Brisbane. The primary veterinarian was surveyed by telephone to ascertain the outcome of each case. Scores were assigned for extent of hyperamylasaemia, hyperlipasaemia and number of organ systems other than the pancreas compromised. The probability of mortality with each score of each analyte was calculated. The strength of interaction between scores for each analyte and mortality rate was assessed by chi-square analysis where appropriate. Relationships between the organ system score, other physiological variables and likelihood of euthanasia were analysed.
Results Scores derived mathematically from analysis of enzyme activities had poor abilities to predict mortality. The score based upon the number of organ systems compromised showed good ability to predict mortality and the interaction between the organ system score and mortality rate was significant by chi-square analysis (P < 0.01). Distribution of data within the amylase and lipase scores was not compatible with chi-square analysis.
Conclusion Assessment of severity of spontaneous canine acute pancreatitis using pancreatic enzyme activities is potentially inaccurate. The use of a severity score based upon organ system compromise was more accurate in determining the likelihood of mortality in spontaneous canine acute pancreatitis. This is compatible with the hypothesis that severe canine acute pancreatitis is a multiple organ failure syndrome.  相似文献

Objective To compare the sensitivities of three coprological techniques for the diagnosis of Anoplocephala perfoliata infection in horses and to assess the value of the methods for diagnosis of horses at risk of clinical cestodiasis.
Design Faecal samples were collected from necropsied horses with or without A perfoliata infection and examined using one sedimentation and two different flotation methods. The coprological results were compared with worm counts performed at necropsy of the horses and the degree of mucosal damage. In addition, the efficiency of recovery of A perfoliata eggs from faeces was tested.
Results The overall sensitivities of the methods ranged from 22.5 to 37.5%, and the capacity of the methods to diagnose infection increased with the intensity of infection. A simple flotation method achieved a better sensitivity (37.5%) at all intensities of infection compared with the other two methods (22.5 to 25%). That method was also more sensitive in detecting eggs in 'negative' faecal samples spiked with known numbers of A perfoliata eggs.
Conclusion The results indicated that, despite the low sensitivities of present methods, faecal flotation is likely to be of value in detecting horses at risk of clinical disease.  相似文献

A test of comparative in vitro cerato-ulmin wilt toxin production in the aggressive and non-aggressive subgroups of the Dutch elm disease pathogen Ophiostoma ulmi was carried out by turbidity and ELISA methods. Ten non-aggressive, ten EAN aggressive and ten NAN aggressive isolates were tested from a range of geographical sources. In liquid shake cultures the non-aggressive isolates produced the greatest and the NAN aggressives the least mean biomass. Despite considerable variation in cerato-ulmin production by individual isolates in three separate experiments, both the turbidity and ELISA methods showed a clear separation of the non-aggressive and aggressive subgroups. Non-aggressive isolates produced little or no cerato-ulmin (ELISA range of means 0–56.0 ng/ml) and EAN and NAN aggressive isolates moderate to high levels (EAN 1.6–89.0 × 104 ng/ml and NAN 0.2–300 × 104 ng/ml). In the aggressive isolates no correlation was detected between cerato-ulmin production and either biomass or pathogenicity to clonal Commelin elm. The role of cerato-ulmin in the pathogenicity of O. ulmi is discussed.  相似文献

The traditional technique of applying anticoagulant rodenticides, as shaped by long experience in the use of low-toxicity, first-generation anticoagulants such as warfarin, aims to maximize treatment efficiency by maximizing the rate of bait consumption by the target rodents. This is done, somewhat laboriously, by laying surplus amounts of bait initially, and maintaining this surplus throughout the treatment by repeatedly replenishing the bait placements. The suggestion that the high toxicity of the second-generation anticoagulants should enable a more efficient baiting system to be designed is examined experimentally in this field study of the control of Rattus norvegicus on British farms. Bait toxicity, infestation size and the incidence of complete takes of bait were found to be independent and highly significant determinants of treatment duration whilst, in comparison, the size and density of bait points and the frequency with which the bait was replenished were found to be relatively unimportant. However, bait size and, more especially, replenishment frequency had detectable secondary effects, apparently through partial relationships with the incidence of complete takes and infestation size. The results indicate, in relation to the control of commensal infestations of R. norvegicus on British farms, that the use of high-toxicity bait formulations and frequent replenishment schedules increase the speed of control, whilst the number and size of bait placements are relatively unimportant; they also suggest that reductions in the frequency of bait replenishment made in order to save labour could be compensated for by increasing the toxicity of the bait and taking other steps to reduce the incidence of complete takes of bait. The results are discussed in relation to the concept of ‘pulsed baiting'.  相似文献

Cryopreservation causes damage to spermatozoa, and methods minimizing this damage are therefore needed. Although much discussed, seminal plasma removal has become an alternative to improve sperm quality and viability after freezing and has been applied to different species in attempt to obtain good results. The objective of this study was to evaluate semen quality in buffaloes submitted to two methods for seminal plasma removal (filtration and centrifugation). Semen samples were collected from seven Murrah buffalo bulls (Bubalus bubalis) once a week for 8 weeks. Each ejaculate was divided into three groups: control (presence of seminal plasma), centrifugation and filtration. Sperm kinetics was evaluated with the computer‐assisted sperm analysis (CASA) system. Plasmalemma and acrosomal membrane integrity, mitochondrial membrane potential and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were measured by flow cytometry, and lipid peroxidation was evaluated by the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) assay. Seminal plasma removal did not improve sperm kinetics compared to the control group. Centrifugation increased the number of cells with damaged acrosomal membranes (0.77 ± 0.05) and filtration caused greater plasmalemma and acrosomal membrane damage (22.18 ± 1.07). No difference in the mitochondrial membrane potential was observed between groups. In contrast, ROS production was higher in the centrifugation group compared to the control and filtration groups, although no differences in TBARS formation were detected. In conclusion, seminal plasma removal did not improve the quality of thawed buffalo semen compared to control in terms of sperm kinetics, membrane integrity, mitochondrial membrane potential or lipid peroxidation.  相似文献
