Optimized conditions for determination of total soil organic matter in diverse samples by mass loss on ignition 下载免费PDF全文

Reliable measurement of soil organic matter (SOM) contents is crucial to assessment of soil health, productive longevity and the effects of climate change. In this study, the loss‐on‐ignition (LOI) method has been used to determine the SOM of dried soil samples with a wide range of clay, sand and silt contents from the Agricultural Laboratory Proficiency (ALP) program. Regressions of ALP participant data against LOI measurements at 350–650°C indicate that the extent of SOM oxidation depends more on the ignition temperature and time than on the sample compositions. Thus, LOI data from ignition at 350–550°C for 12 h relative to ignition at 650°C for 12 h converge at 650°C and the average coefficient of variance decreases to ≈ 4% at 650°C. Also examined are regressions of soil organic C from direct dry combustion as standards with LOI measured at 360°C for 2 h, LOI measured at 650°C for 12 h and with the Walkley‐Black procedure used in the ALP program. 相似文献

During development, the ribonuclease activity of maize endo sperm homozygous for the opaque-2 gene increased earlier and, after a longer period of exponential increase, was much higher finally than in normal endosperm. The maximum difference was about sixfold and occurred 22 to 25 days after pollination. Heterozygotes on day 23 did not show a comparable in crease in endosperm activity. No differ ence in the activity ratio (pH 6.0: pH 5.2) was found between normal and opaque-2 endosperm, indicating that the increase in activity in opaque-2 was due solely to an increase in ribo nuclease A. Control rats and rats treated with subcutaneous trypan blue were injected intravenously with denatured albumin-I(125). Lysosome-rich fractions of their livers, when incubated at 22 degrees C in osmotically protected medium (pH 7.4), retained their capacit to digest albumin-I(125). The rate of digestion was lower in suspensions pre-pared from rats treated with trypan blue than in control suspensions, but rates of lysosome breakage were not different. T'hese results and other experimental evidence suggest that trypanblue concentrated within lysosomes can inhibit intralysosomal digestion, probably by inhibition of lysosomal proteinases. 相似文献

We purified antifreeze proteins from winter-active snow fleas, Hypogastrura harveyi. These 6.5- and 15.7-kilodalton thermolabile proteins are glycine-rich (45% of the residues), and the short isoform is composed of the tripeptide repeat Gly-X-X. Supergene chalcocite enrichment during weathering is an economically vital natural process that may lead to severalfold increases in the copper content of sulfide deposits. A scanning electron microscope study of chalcocite (Cu2S) from major enriched copper deposits in northern Chile revealed myriad bacterioform bodies in original growth positions near replacement interfaces with remnant hypogene sulfide grains. These minute (0.03 to 0.2 micrometers) chalcocite bodies are interpreted as fossilized and metallized nannobacteria that promoted the fixation of mobilized copper ions. Bacterial activity may thus be a fundamental factor in supergene enrichment of copper deposits. 相似文献

The accompanying article of Horo witz et al. concluded with the view that the COSPAR recommendations re garding Mars should be adjusted to re flect new environmental information. Specifically, it was concluded that viable terrestrial microorganisms which are transported to Mars inside solid components in sealed spaces have a low probability of being released to the sur face or atmosphere, and that, if any are released, they are not likely to in fect the planet. We suggest, in addition, that both the COSPAR recommenda tions and U.S. planetary quarantine policy should be altered to take into account past and continuing Soviet prac tice regarding the. exploration of Mars and Venus. No amount of analysis by COSPAR, or of costly, self-imposed restrictions by the U.S. on its own planetary exploration program, can reduce the probability of contamination of either Venus or Mars below what the Soviets have already made it, or will make it as they continue their large planetary effort. All that U.S. policy can accomplish is to insure that U.S. efforts do not significantly increase the probability above that level. Any rec ommended policy which would require the U.S. to apply significantly more stringent restrictions is illogical in that, in effect, the U.S. would be asked to increase greatly the cost and complexity of its planetary program without achieving any significant reduction in the probability of actual contamination. There exists some parallelism be tween the problem of planetary quaran tine and that of radioactive fallout from atmospheric nuclear testing, al though the desirable solution to the quarantine problem is not merely to stop all activity. Both are multilateral problems, and individual national policy necessarily must reflect the policy of other nations. Thus, the real questions that must be faced by COSPAR, and by the U.S., are, (i) What is the prob able number of viable terrestrial micro organisms alreadyr transported to Venus and to Mars? and (ii) What is the to tal number to be expected in the next decade or so from foreseeable Soviet efforts alone? Then COSPAR can rec ommend, and the U.S. can decide, that the total U.S. contribution should be equal to some specified fraction of the total present and future Soviet contribu tion. This approach in turn suggests that every effort should be made to induce the Soviets to supply additional de tails on the Zond 2 and Venus 3 mis sion and trajectory and, particularly, on the procedure used for sterilizing the components and assembly of both space craft. With such information, the proba ble number of viable terrestrial microor ganisms deposited on Venus and Mars could be estimated well enough to per mit a. realistic quantitative analysis of what U.S. policy and practice should be. However, if more complete informa tion on Soviet practice cannot be ob tained, then, it seems to us, the U.S. has no logical alternative but to per mit greater engineering freedom in lander delivery technique and to ac cept gaseous and other nonthermal sterilization procedures, where neces sary, in its own program. By relying on the demonstrated U.S. spacecraft reliability to insure that the U.S. con tribution to planetary contamination will remain significantly less than the Soviet contribution, we could reduce significantly the cost and time required to carry out serious scientific investiga tions of the surfaces of Venus and Mars. 相似文献

The effects of auxin on the inhibition of lateral buds in decapitated bean plants are enhanced if kinetin is applied together with auxin. The uptake of (14)C-indoleacetic acid by the stumps of decapitated plants is increased in the presence of kinetin and leads to extensive transport of (14)C-indoleacetic acid in the stems. The increased bud inhibition resulting when auxin and kinetin are applied together may be due to greater amounts of auxin reaching the buds, but an alternative explanation is that metabolites are directed from the buds to the point of hormone application. 相似文献

Experimental acidification of a small lake from an original pH value of 6.8 to 5.0 over an 8-year period caused a number of dramatic changes in the lake's food web. Changes in phytoplankton species, cessation of fish reproduction, disappearance of the benthic crustaceans, and appearance of filamentous algae in the littoral zone were consistent with deductions from synoptic surveys of lakes in regions of high acid deposition. Contrary to what had been expected from synoptic surveys, acidification of Lake 223 did not cause decreases in primary production, rates of decomposition, or nutrient concentrations. Key organisms in the food web leading to lake trout, including Mysis relicta and Pimephales promelas, were eliminated from the lake at pH values as high as 5.8, an indication that irreversible stresses on aquatic ecosystems occur earlier in the acidification process than was heretofore believed. These changes are caused by hydrogen ion alone, and not by the secondary effect of aluminum toxicity. Since no species of fish reproduced at pH values below 5.4, the lake would become fishless within about a decade on the basis of the natural mortalities of the most long-lived species. 相似文献
