The toxicity of pindone, a rabbit poison, to horses, cattle, goats, chickens, dogs and cats was investigated, using extension of prothrombin time (PT) as an index of poisoning. The daily dose of pindone, administered for 5 days, ranged from 0.3 mg/kg for dogs to 2.5 mg/kg for chickens. This range of dose rates was considered to be indicative of the worst possible case that could arise following a campaign of baiting for rabbits. Although significant elevations in PT (more than double baseline values) were noted in all species other than horses, clinical signs of anticoagulant poisoning were not observed in any of the species tested. From the observed PT, cattle and cats appeared to be the most susceptible, and horses the least susceptible, to pindone toxicity. The half-lives of the elevated PT were calculated as 3.1 days for cattle, 2.8 days for goats and chickens, 1.9 days for horses and dogs and less than one day for cats. It is proposed that these half-lives can be used as a guide for determining the duration of treatment of pindone-affected animals. 相似文献

An ELISA to detect Clostridium botulinum type D toxin was developed using polyclonal antibodies to a semi-purified toxic complex of the neurotoxin. Sensitivity of the ELISA for detecting type C and type D toxin compared with mouse inoculation was 70% and specificity 96% on samples from animals with botulism diagnosed on clinical signs and herd history. However, both mouse inoculation and the ELISA failed to detect toxin in many animals with a presumptive diagnosis of botulism. Some cross-reaction was seen with Clostridium novyi type A, but not with other clostridial species. While the ELISA described here cannot replace mouse inoculation for the diagnosis of botulism, it is a useful additional test. 相似文献

The liming of soils in the lower part of an upland catchment was found to have a major effect on both soil properties and the chemistry of drainage waters. Exchangeable Al was closely correlated with soil pH and showed a very steep rise from 2.6-4.8 meq 1−1 over the pH range 5.5-4.5. As streams flowed from unimproved through improved land there was an increase in pH and the concentration of all major anions and basic cations. The greatest increase was in Ca (approximately 3.5-fold). The concentrations of all dissolved Al species decreased, with inorganic monomeric Al falling to near zero. Leachates were examined from soils representative of the most acidic and the least acidic. Calcium concentrations differed by almost tenfold. Aluminium was present in leachates from the limed soil, but most was unreactive and none was inorganic monomeric. Most of the Al leached from the acid soil was monomeric.
A model of soil acidification is proposed in which soil Ca is depleted at a rate of 8% of the exchangeable Ca per annum. The model predicts that liming a soil to neutrality would be likely to influence drainage water chemistry for 30-40 years and that the most acidic soils of the catchment show no net loss of Ca to drainage. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This paper presents an empirical analysis of the effect of impact fees on the value of land used in residential development. A random effects model is estimated to examine the relationship between impact fees and land values using forty‐three Texas cities that impose impact fees. Prior research suggests that higher impact fees result in higher lot values, and the results of this research support this suggestion. Results indicate that for each $1,000 increase in impact fees, lot values increase by 1.3 percent. Additionally, these results suggest that developers are able to pass a small amount of the impact fee to the owners of developable land. However, for undeveloped land the results are mixed. For each $1,000 in assessed impact fees, undeveloped land values decrease by 0.042 percent. These results support prior evidence that suggests home buyers may ultimately bear the majority of the cost of impact fees. 相似文献
