The aim of this analysis was to characterise the temporal pattern of infection during the 1997/98 classical swine fever (CSF) epidemic in The Netherlands and hence identify and quantify risk factors for infection in different enterprise types and areas. Survival analysis and Cox proportional hazards regression were used to describe the epidemic. Substantial differences in temporal survival patterns (herd breakdown rate) were found between areas where different control policies operated. Factors with a significant influence on the infection hazard of individual herds included: sow numbers as a percentage of total sows and fatteners (HR = 3.38 for mixed herds (0.1–60% sows) vs. fattening herds (0% sows) and HR = 2.74 for breeding herds (60–100% sows) vs. fattening herds), the number of ‘transport contacts per month’ (>0.3 vs. <0.3; HR = 4.11), pig density (pigs/km2) in the area (HR1000 pigs 1.48) and herd size (HR100 pigs = 1.01).

Pre-emptive slaughter in an area appeared to be associated with lower subsequent disease levels. Higher frequency of transport contacts for welfare slaughter during the epidemic, however, well regulated and controlled, was associated with a substantially higher risk of becoming infected. The positive association of a higher pig density with CSF indicates the potential importance of local spread as a factor in disease transmission and emphasizes that dilution of the pig population can contribute to reduction in CSF occurrence. This analysis suggests however, that if pre-emptive slaughter can promptly be applied effectively in an area after initial diagnosis, pig density is then not a significant factor. Mixed and breeding herds had a higher probability of becoming infected than fattening herds, possibly due to different types and frequencies of inter-herd contacts. These contacts continue to some extent during the epidemic, despite the standstill of animal movements.  相似文献

The effectiveness of simultaneous administration of commercial Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae vaccines was tested in an indoor commercial piggery which had experienced continuing respiratory-disease problems confirmed as due to both of these pathogens. Piglets were randomly assigned in equal numbers to vaccination and control groups, and each vaccine was administered at a separate site to assigned piglets at two and four weeks of age. Live weight of vaccinates immediately prior to slaughter was 2.49 kg higher (p = 0.04) than for controls at equal mean slaughter age of 132 days. Average daily gain (ADG) from 16 weeks to slaughter of vaccinates was also significantly higher (33 g/day) than in controls (p = 0.05). Daily gain was not significantly different in younger age groups. Active enzootic pneumonia lesions were more likely in control than in vaccinated pigs. There were no significant differences between vaccination groups with regard to severity of pleurisy or presence of pleuropneumonia lesions at slaughter. Log-linear modelling was used to test the statistical association between vaccination, enzootic pneumonia lesions, pleurisy lesions and pleuropneumonia lesions. It showed a reduction in the severity of enzootic pneumonia lesions for vaccinated pigs, and the presence of pleuropneumonia lesions increased the likelihood of pleurisy lesions. No other association was significant, and no evidence of synergy between the vaccines in influencing lesion severity for pleuropneumonia was detected (within the limitations set by the trial design).  相似文献

1. Data from 30 published experiments have been analysed to examine the relationships between environmental temperature and the long-term, adapted responses of laying pullets, measured as metabolisable energy intake, egg output and body weight change. Heat production was also estimated indirectly from the other three variables. 2. The majority of experiments employed White Leghorns, but there were 8 large trials in which brown crossbred pullets had been compared directly with White Leghorns. These trials were used to estimate differences in energy intake and heat output between brown and white birds. 3. A total of over 26,000 birds was involved in the analysis. Individual trials varied in scale from 9 birds to 2,280 birds per treatment and in duration from 8 to 61 weeks. The constant temperatures investigated ranged from 10 degrees C to 34 degrees C, but there were no data for brown pullets beyond 30 degrees C. 4. The relationship between temperature and metabolisable energy intake is curvilinear, with food intake declining more steeply as ambient temperature approaches body temperature. Adapted heat production per bird is also a curvilinear function of temperature, tending towards a value of zero when extrapolated to the point at which ambient temperature equals normal body temperature. However no satisfactory data are available for fully adapted responses in the range 34 to 42 degrees C because egg production declines continuously when these temperatures are maintained for long periods. 5. When energy intake and heat output are expressed as functions of metabolic body size (kg 0.75) they can be represented as linear functions of temperature within the range 15 to 30 degrees C, but the slope must change outside this range. 6. It is calculated that the energy available for production is at a maximum at 23 degrees C for brown birds and at 24 degrees C for White Leghorns. Gross energetic efficiency is at a maximum at 30 degrees C, but egg output is reduced at this temperature. The optimum operating temperature for laying houses will depend upon the local cost of modifying ambient temperature and on the cost of supplying diets of appropriate protein content.  相似文献

SUMMARY Clinical signs of proliferative haemorrhagic enteropathy (PHE) including anaemia, dysentery and sudden death were observed in finisher pigs and young breeding stock on 2 farms. On farm A, PHE occurred 12 months after repopulation of the farm. Other outbreaks of PHE occurred after the withdrawal of therapeutic concentrations of in-feed antibacterial agents (farm A), or after monensin sodium (100 g/t) replaced olaquindox (100 g/t) in feed (farm B). The outbreaks, the possible sources of contamination and the role of antibacterial feed additives in the treatment and control of PHE are described.  相似文献

The sexual maturity of growing pullets can be retarded either by restricting calorie intake or by feeding a diet deficient in one or more essential amino acids, Several methods have been proposed for achieving either of these objectives. In this review the methods have been classified as (a) limiting the birds’ time of access to food, (b) quantitative food restriction, (c) the use of low energy diets and (d) dietary protein restriction.

Food restriction by limiting the time of access to food has given inconsistent results and is an unsatisfactory technique. Birds quickly learn to eat normal quantities of food in a very short space of time.

Quantitative food restriction has been widely used in experiments and is usually applied from about 6 to about 20 weeks of age. The available evidence enables relationships to be established between the degree of food restriction and subsequent body weight and sexual maturity. The effect of rearing treatment on mortality and rate of lay is also examined.

The ad libitum feeding of a low‐energy growing diet has always resulted in greater rearing food costs. This is because moderate reductions in energy content of the diet are offset by higher food intake. Diets sufficiently low in energy to cause a reduction in calorie intake will involve the purchase and handling of very large proportions of non‐nutritive material.

The use of protein‐deficient diets during the growing period, or from one day of age, offers a suitable means of delaying sexual maturity. The effects of such a treatment are apparently very similar to those of restricted feeding, but there is a lack of suitable comparisons of the alternative methods.  相似文献

High concentrations of retinoids occur in some commercial cat food formulations as a result of the use of animal liver as an ingredient. Our objective was to study the teratogenic potential of dietary vitamin A in cats. We investigated the incidence of birth defects in kittens of queens given diets with retinyl acetate concentrations of 6000, 306000, or 606000 retinol equivalents (RE)/kg diet (control, 306K, or 606K groups, respectively) for approximately 3 years [1 RE=1 micro g retinol=3.3 International Units (IU)]. Each group comprised 12-15 age-matched, nulliparous domestic short-haired queens that were exposed to toms. There were a total of 396 kittens born in 97 litters. Pregnancy rate, number of kittens per gestation and gestations per year were not significantly different among treatment groups. A total of 2, 5 and 11 malformed kittens occurred in the control, 306K and 606K groups, respectively. Malformations included cleft palate, cranioschisis, foreshortened mandible, stenotic colon, enlarged heart and agenesis of the spinal cord and small intestine, which are typical foetal defects consistent with ingestion of excess retinoids in other species. This study demonstrated that a concentration of 306000 RE/kg diet has a potential for causing birth defects in the kittens.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the functionality of canine anti-Malassezia IgE via the passive transfer of immediate hypersensitivity localized to the skin (ie, cutaneous anaphylaxis) from atopic dogs with dermatitis attributable to overgrowth of Malassezia pachydermatis (Malassezia dermatitis [MD]) to healthy recipient dogs by use of the Prausnitz-Küstner (P-K) technique. ANIMALS: 7 clinically normal dogs, 32 atopic dogs with MD, serum from 11 atopic dogs with MD, and 3 healthy dogs without prior sensitization to M pachydermatis. PROCEDURE: Serum from atopic dogs with MD was used for P-K tests in 3 clinically normal recipient dogs. Serial dilutions of untreated, heat-inactivated, IgE-absorbed, and bovine serum albumin (BSA)-absorbed (control) aliquots of serum were injected ID in triplicate for dermal sensitization. Twenty-four, 48, and 72 hours later, a crude extract of M pachydermatis was injected ID into the sites used for sensitization injections, and immediate hypersensitivity reactions were graded on a 4-point scale. RESULTS: Untreated serum caused P-K reactivity beginning 24 hours after passive sensitization and persisting through 72 hours (titers, 1:32 to 1:64). Heat inactivation and IgE-absorption of serum eliminated P-K reactivity, whereas treatment of serum with BSA did not. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Analysis of P-K test results supports the passive transfer of cutaneous anaphylaxis by anti-Malassezia IgE and indicates it is functional in type-1 hypersensitivity reactions of atopic dogs with MD. Reduction or blockade of anti-Malassezia IgE in atopic dogs with MD may provide better clinical control of the disease.  相似文献
