We examine habitat use by hunting hen harriers Circus cyaneus at three study sites in Scotland to evaluate whether foraging patterns differ between sexes, sites, and stages of the breeding period. We modelled time spent hunting in focal plots as a function of habitat and nest proximity. Male hunting intensity (time spent hunting per hour of observation and km2) varied between sites and breeding periods, being lower during the nestling than the incubation period. Habitat use patterns were mostly consistent among study sites, which is important for developing species management recommendations applicable over the species’ range. Males avoided improved grassland, and selected areas of mixed heather and rough grass (with an optimum at ca. 50% heather cover). The effect of nest proximity was small. In contrast, females hunted mainly within 300-500 m of the nest, with a small additive effect of vegetation cover, areas of fragmented heather being preferred. Habitat management to benefit foraging harriers will involve creating (or maintaining) mosaics of heather/grassland around nest areas. Additionally, it might be possible to manipulate habitat to reduce conflict in areas where harrier predation on red grouse is important by segregating areas holding highest grouse densities (with high heather cover) from those favoured for harrier foraging (heather-grass mosaics). However, it would be necessary to test whether these manipulations might also influence harrier nest distribution, an effect which could negate any benefits from this strategy.  相似文献

Stage-specific analyses of starch and 18 sugars, including pentoses, hexoses, disaccharides, trisaccharides, oligosaccharides and sugar alcohols, were made throughout seed development for zygotic embryo and female gametophyte (FG) tissues of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.). Tissue was most often analyzed in triplicate from two open-pollinated families grown in different locations and sampled in different years. Carbohydrates were analyzed by enzymatic assay, high performance liquid chromatography or gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. For all carbohydrates quantified, peak concentrations were higher in embryo tissue than in FG tissue. Significant changes in starch and sugar concentrations occurred over time, with both seed collections showing similar trends in temporal changes. Although concentrations were not always similar, embryo and FG tissues generally showed similar patterns of change in starch and sugar concentrations over time. Total starch concentration was highest during early seed development and decreased as development progressed. The major sugars contributing to osmotic potential during early seed development were D-pinitol, sucrose, fructose and glucose. During mid-seed development, D-pinitol, sucrose, fructose, glucose, melibiose and raffinose provided major contributions to the osmotic environment. During late seed development, sucrose, raffinose, melibiose, stachyose and fructose were the major contributors to osmotic potential. These data suggest stage-specific media composition for each step in the somatic embryogenesis protocol.  相似文献

During the last three decades, aquaculture has been the fastest growing animal-food-producing sector in the world, accounting for half of the present seafood supply. However, there is a significant growth disparity among aquaculture-producing countries. The reasons why some countries have achieved remarkable growth in aquaculture while others have stagnated or even declined have not been determined. In this article, we investigate whether environmental regulations have an impact on aquaculture growth. Using a cross-country regression analysis, we show that stringent environmental regulations are negatively related to aquaculture growth, whereas GDP growth has a positive effect. Countries often face a difficult balancing act between growth and environmental considerations when devising regulations. Our empirical results suggest that stricter environmental regulations in developed countries have contributed to lower growth rates and that these countries are falling behind emerging and developing economies that have more lenient environmental regulations.  相似文献

Aquaculture is the world's fastest growing animal food producing sector. Although its overall performance is very good, it is unevenly spread geographically. In particular, the growth in most EU countries has been stagnating over the past 20 years despite repeated policy initiatives to launch new growth in the industry. The lack of production growth in EU aquaculture is often explained by strict environmental regulation and bureaucracy. In this article, we argue that an additional important element is an industry structure that limits the innovation and use of new technologies. Historically, farms have been small and often co‐managed with larger agriculture production. However, to succeed in a market with global competition, technological innovation and sector‐wide specialization, it is necessary to continuously increase productivity and induce investments in larger production facilities to take advantage of economies of scale. In Denmark, a structural change was ‘kicked off’ in 2005. In just 6 years, 30% of Danish production in freshwater has been reallocated to larger and more technologically advanced recirculation farms. Labour productivity has increased and the environmental impact per kilo of fish produced has been reduced, improving future prospects for aquaculture in Denmark and Europe.  相似文献

In this study we report on changes in the belowground ectomycorrhizal fungal communities in southern Swedish coniferous forests as a consequence of liming with 3–7 ton limestone per hectare 16 years prior to the study.  相似文献

Angus x Hereford steers (n = 48) similar in frame size and in muscle thickness were allotted to eight groups (n = 6) of similar mean live weight for serial slaughter at 28-d intervals (0 to 196 d). Except for d-0 steers, which served as grass-fed controls, all steers were fed a high-concentrate diet during the finishing period. Upon slaughter, one side of each carcass was trimmed of subcutaneous fat in the wholesale rib region. Postmortem longissimus muscle (LM) temperature was monitored for each side during the 24-h chilling period. After quality and yield grade data were collected, rib steaks were removed and aged (7 d) and sensory traits of the steaks were evaluated. Most carcass grade traits increased linearly (P less than .01) with days on feed, whereas most sensory panel variables and marbling increased curvilinearly (P less than .05). Generally, after 56 d on feed, carcasses chilled at slower rates (P less than .05) with increased days fed. Taste panel tenderness, amount of perceived connective tissue, and shear force values peaked at 112 d and were slightly less desirable for cattle fed longer than 112 d (quadratic term, P less than .01). Postmortem muscle temperature at 2.5 h was the chilling time most highly correlated with tenderness values among untrimmed sides. Correlations for shear force with 2.5-h LM temperature, marbling score, days fed, fat thickness, and carcass weight were -.63, -.61, -.56, -.55, and -.53, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Selection in pigs for either fast (line F) or slow (line S) postweaning gain was replicated in spring (SREP) and fall (FREP) farrowing groups. Littermate barrows were sampled from F and S during Generations 2, 3, and 4 of the SREP and Generation 3 of the FREP. Beginning at approximately 35 kg (OTWT), barrows were either allowed ad libitum access to feed (AL) or limited to a standard total feed intake (LIM). Blocks of the line x intake level factorial were removed from test and carcass data collected when the average weight of barrows in the block was approximately 110 kg. Carcass data were also collected on an additional barrow from each litter at OTWT to allow estimation of lean tissue gain per unit of feed consumed (LTFC) of tested barrows. In Generations 3 and 4 of the SREP, F-AL was greater (P less than .01) than S-AL for average daily intake and ADG; carcass backfat was greater (P less than .01) but LTFC tended to be less (P less than .10) for F-AL than for S-AL. When LIM was imposed in the SREP, F barrows gained faster (P less than .05) than S barrows in Generation 4, but across generation the lines did not differ for carcass backfat and LTFC was greater (P less than .01) for F than for S. In the FREP, F-AL was greater (P less than .05) than S-AL for average daily intake and ADG and was less (P less than .05) for LTFC, but F and S did not differ for these traits when LIM was imposed; carcass backfat of F was greater (P less than .01) than that of S by .46 cm under AL and .38 cm under LIM. Most of the response in ADG could be attributed to changes in intake, but results in Generation 4 of the SREP indicated that changes in efficiency had also contributed. Most of the additional intake in F vs S resulted in deposition of fat, probably due in part to the heavier weight of F-AL vs S-AL barrows.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine absolute and relative heart size in clinically normal cats by correlating heart size and selected skeletal structures. DESIGN: Prospective radiographic study. ANIMALS: 100 cats that did not have thoracic radiographic abnormalities. PROCEDURE: Standardized measurements of the long and short axes of the heart, midthoracic vertebrae, and other structures were made. Measurements were recorded in millimeters and number of thoracic vertebral lengths spanned by each dimension, measured caudally from T4 in a lateral radiograph. The long- and short-axis measurements of the heart, expressed in vertebral lengths, were added to yield vertebral heart size. RESULTS: Mean +/- SD vertebral heart size in lateral radiographs was 7.5 +/- 0.3 vertebrae. The long-axis dimension correlated with the length of 3 sternebrae, measured from S2 to S4. The cardiac short-axis dimension correlated moderately with the length of 3.2 vertebrae, measured from T4 to T6. The cardiac short-axis dimension in ventrodorsal radiographs was 3.4 +/- 0.25 vertebrae. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The vertebral heart-size method is easy to use, allows objective assessment of heart size, and may be helpful in determining cardiomegaly and comparing heart size in sequential radiographs.  相似文献

Lifetime productivity of young (2 to 6-yr-old) crossbred cows containing various proportions (0, 1/4, or 1/2) of Braham breeding was evaluated using 188 spring-calving and 154 fall-calving cows. Cows were mated to Limousin sires to produce 1983 through 1986 calf crops. The 1987 calf crops were produced using Limousin and Salers sires. Significant (P less than .10) genotype (crossbred cow group) x environment (season of calving) interactions were found for age at first calf and lifetime calving percentage and mature cow weight. Within the spring calving group, no differences were found between crossbred groups for age at first calf or lifetime calving percentage. However, within the fall-calving group, 0 and 1/2 Braham cows from Angus dams calved earlier than did those from Hereford dams. Age at first calf also tended to increase as proportion of Brahman increased in the fall-calving group. Within the fall-calving group, lifetime calving percentage for 0 and 1/2 Brahman cows from Hereford dams was lower than for those from Angus dams. The opposite was true for the 1/4 Braham crosses. In general, as the proportion of Brahman breeding increased, productivity, measured as weight per calf or weight weaned per year, increased; however, age at first calving increased also as proportion of Brahman increased. All spring-calving groups calved earlier in life (P less than .05) than their respective fall-calving counterparts and with the exception of the 0 Brahman groups, which were similar, spring-calving groups produced a higher (P less than .05) percentage of calves than did the fall groups.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
