Distribution of cortical, perimedullary, and pith tissues and total solids content were determined on both a fresh and a dry weight basis for six potato cultivars grown concurrently in three locations in California. At one location, tubers harvested 80 days from planting were 1.0 to 2.5% lower in total solids than tubers harvested at later dates. The high solids cortical tissues ranged from 39 to 51% of whole tubers on a dry basis, and the amount appeared to be related to tuber shape. White Rose and Red LaSoda showed greater difference in per cent total solids between cortical and perimedullary tissues than did Kennebec, Lenape,3 Norchip, and Russet Burbank. The high total solids of the cortical tissues is particularly significant to processing losses. Any method of peeling that removes one half the linear depth of the cortical tissues can result in a loss of 25% or more of total tuber solids, depending upon cultivar and tuber shape. Tuber development and distribution of total solids and other components were previously described for Red Pontiac, Russet Burbank, and White Rose tubers obtained from the retail market (6,9,10,11). It was particularly noted that the high-solids cortical tissues, although averaging only about 6mm in depth, comprised between 40 and 50% of both fresh and dry tuber weights (6,11). Because this sort of distribution of solids is especially significant to peeling loss, possible differences in solids among cultivars and at different harvest dates were investigated.  相似文献

Calculations based on average parenchyma cell diameters of 160 to 240 μ in potatoes show that for chips expected losses range from 8 to 12% at 2 mm slice thickness, and from 16 to 24% at 1 mm thickness. Similar calculations for different size and thickness of dice used in dehydrated and frozen potato products show losses ranging from 4 to over 13% per piece. These calculated losses are due entirely to cut cells, the contents of which are washed out before processing. It is assumed that clean, sharp cuts are made without tearing of additional cells. These calculations do not take into account losses from peeling, trimming, leaching, irregular pieces, and other sources. Total losses from all potato processing may exceed 750 million pounds of potato solids per year. Relationships of these losses to the economy of potato processing and particularly to potato breeding, growing, and problems of waste reclamation and utilization are discussed.  相似文献

Root-nodule bacteria that nodulate the legume genus Lotononis are being investigated to develop new forage species for agriculture. Bacteria isolated from nodules of Lotononis angolensis were fast-growing, highly mucoid and pink-pigmented, and on the basis of 16S rRNA phylogeny <94% related to other genera in the Alphaproteobacteria. Root-nodule bacteria isolated from other Lotononis species (L. bainesii, L. solitudinis and L. listii) resembled the more common dry, slow-growing, pink-pigmented rhizobia previously described for L. bainesii. These isolates could be attributed to the Methylobacterium genus, although not to the type species Methylobacterium nodulans. Further differences were uncovered with nodulation studies revealing that nodule isolates from L. angolensis were effective at nitrogen fixation on their host plant, but could nodulate neither L. bainesii nor L. listii. Reciprocal tests showed isolates from L. bainesii, L. listii and L. solitudinis were incapable of nodulating L. angolensis effectively. Nodule morphology for L. bainesii, L. angolensis and L. listii was characteristically lupinoid, with little structural divergence between the species, and with nodules eventually enclosing the entire root.  相似文献

Cell wall composition and histological distinctions between immature and mature periderm are reviewed. The structural characteristics of the periderm of immature tubers vitiate economic peeling. Continuous sloughing and replacement of periderm, occurring with rapid enlargement of Russet Burbank tubers, creates large unsuberized surface areas particularly susceptible to deep penetration of hot caustic and consequent pitting of tubers. The fully developed russetted net of mature periderm is well suberized and holds the caustic so it does not deeply penetrate. Improved crop management and harvest practices could eliminate excessive peel loss due to immature periderm.  相似文献
