Three experiments were conducted to investigate experimentally the occurrence of periparturient nematode egg rise in ewes and the hormonal modulation of Haemonchus contortus infections. In the first experiment, fall-bred and winter-bred pregnant (n = 4 and 14, respectively) and nonpregnant (n = 5 and 29, respectively) ewes were treated with anthelmintic and were pastured together on fields that were contaminated with H contortus. Three weeks before lambing, all ewes were placed in concrete pens; fecal egg counts for the winter-bred group were obtained on alternate days. Pregnant and lactating ewes had significantly larger numbers (P less than 0.01) of H contortus eggs than did the nonpregnant controls 1 week before and after lambing. Lactating, fall-bred ewes had significantly (P less than 0.01) more adult worms in their abomasum through natural acquisition than the nonpregnant controls. In the second experiment, fall-bred and winter-bred, helminth-free, pregnant (n = 4 and 8, respectively) and nonpregnant (n = 3 and 15, respectively) ewes were inoculated on 5 alternate days, beginning 70 days after breeding with 20,000 infective H contortus larvae. The ewes were maintained on concrete pens throughout pregnancy. Fecal egg counts were significantly (P less than 0.05) greater in pregnant ewes, beginning 1 week before lambing until 1 week after lambing. Abomasums of lactating ewes from both lambing seasons yielded significantly (P less than 0.01) more adult worms at necropsy than nonpregnant ewes. Florida pompano perform well on soy‐based, low‐animal protein diets. These diets may be improved through the use of enzymes as a feed supplement or as pretreatment of the soy product prior to inclusion. Novel soy products produced through enzyme treatment or fermentation often have higher protein content and lower levels of indigestible carbohydrates. Two trials were conducted to evaluate the potential of enzyme supplements. The first trial evaluated the effects of carbohydrase supplementation to diets based on two different soybean meals (commodity or selectively bred meal). Pompano fed the selected soybean had significantly improved growth rates and feed efficiency, while enzymatic supplementation had no significant effect on fish performance. However, enzyme supplementation increased phosphorus and energy retention when added to diets based on commodity soybean meal. Carbohydrase supplementation improved dry matter digestibility in commodity soy‐based diets but had no significant effect on selected soybean‐based diets. The second growth trial consisted of an increasing inclusion of an enzymatically treated soybean meal product (NutriVance). Results indicate that NutriVance can replace the totality of commodity soybean without impacting fish performance. Digestibility of the commodity soy, NutriVance, and a fermented soybean meal (Pepsoygen) was also evaluated, with no detectable difference in digestibility values.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between serologic status for bovine leukemia virus (BLV) and culling rates by use of survival times in a commercial Holstein dairy herd. DESIGN: Longitudinal study. ANIMALS: 593 milking cows. PROCEDURE: Cattle were tested for antibodies against BLV by use of agar gel immunodiffusion or ELISA 4 times each year from 1989 to 1993 and then annually through 1999. Dates of birth, first calving, and culling or death were obtained from Dairy Herd Improvement Association records. Most cows were enrolled in the study on the date of first calving. Survival times were compared among seropositive, seronegative, and seroconverted cows with the Kaplan-Meier method and a Cox regression model stratified on the basis of year of birth. RESULTS: Complete records were available for 593 of 685 (87%) cattle in the dairy herd during the study period. Median survival time for all cows was 31.7 months. Survival times, which correspond to cull rates, did not differ significantly between seropositive and seronegative cattle, whereas cattle that seroconverted during the study had a significantly longer survival time. Year of birth was positively and significantly associated with survival time. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: BLV serologic status was not associated with cull rate as measured by survival time in this dairy herd. This finding is in contrast to results of studies that used survival analysis techniques; our results may influence management decisions concerning BLV.  相似文献

Chemoradiotherapy in young women with cancer has substantially improved life expectancy in these patients, but these treatments often cause infertility. One method of preserving fertility is to cryopreserve ovarian tissue. In this study, an automatic open-vessel freezing system with self-seeding was tested for cryopreservation of murine ovarian tissue; the mouse is a species widely used in human and veterinary medical research. The freezing system concerned, is used for cryopreservation of oocytes and embryos in Europe. Twenty severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice were ovariectomized. The ovarian tissue was either directly transplanted heterotopically into the neck muscle (group 1, n = 6) or cryopreserved after equilibration with 1.5 M dimethylsulphoxide and propanediol. After thawing, the tissue was transplanted in SCID mice (group 2, n = 6). Before and after thawing, a part of the ovarian tissue was examined with the LIVE/DEAD fluorescent viability staining. The count of follicles revealed intact (fresh 24.1%/thawed 21.7%), impaired (fresh 35.1%/thawed 35.4%), and dead follicles (fresh 40.8%/thawed 42.9%). The healthy follicular loss because of the cryopreservation was 10.0%. All recipient mice were killed after 3 weeks. Transplanted ovarian tissue was found macroscopically in all mice. Histological examination showed several growing follicles in all developmental phases in both groups of SCID mice [group 1 (fresh grafts): 315 +/- 76.3 (mean +/- SD); group 2 (cryopreserved grafts): 237 +/- 63.4]. These results demonstrate that the use of an open-freezing system allows the survival of cryopreserved mouse ovarian tissue.  相似文献
