SUMMARY The metabolism and clinical potential for dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) modifications using oil supplements containing n-3 and n-6 fatty acids are reviewed. Their use in such disorders as renal disease, inflammatory and immune-related disorders, and dermatological conditions in dogs and cats is discussed. The influence of n-3 fatty acid-rich rations on the endotoxin response in horses is described. Progress has been made toward understanding the clinical potential for PUFAs in these species. However, they have not yet been shown to be efficacious in any of the conditions investigated.  相似文献

Tomato fruits at the green mature stage were inoculated with a mixed sporangial suspension of A1 and A2 isolates ofPhytophthora infestans. Other fruits were inoculated with either A1 or A2 sporangia. Seeds were extracted from the blighted fruits and sown in soil or on agar media to test for the transmission of late blight to the emerging seedlings. Only 23 (0.09%) of approximately 25,000 seedlings developed symptoms. All blighted seedlings originated from fruits inoculated with mixed A1 + A2 sporangia. Isolates ofP. infestans recovered from the emerging blighted seedlings were seemingly of oosporic origin, as they differed phenotypically (mating type, virulence, sensitivity to metalaxyl) from the parent isolates used to inoculate the fruits. The results suggest that transmission ofP. infestans might occur by seeds extracted from fruits carrying oospores and less probably by seeds extracted from fruits having no oospores. http://www.phytoparasitica.org posting April 30, 2004.  相似文献

Changes in gene regulation likely influenced the profound phenotypic divergence of humans from other mammals, but the extent of adaptive substitution in human regulatory sequences remains unknown. We identified 992 conserved noncoding sequences (CNSs) with a significant excess of human-specific substitutions. These accelerated elements were disproportionately found near genes involved in neuronal cell adhesion. To assess the uniqueness of human noncoding evolution, we examined CNSs accelerated in chimpanzee and mouse. Although we observed a similar enrichment near neuronal adhesion genes in chimpanzee, the accelerated CNSs themselves exhibited almost no overlap with those in human, suggesting independent evolution toward different neuronal phenotypes in each species. CNSs accelerated in mouse showed no bias toward neuronal cell adhesion. Our results indicate that widespread cis-regulatory changes in human evolution may have contributed to uniquely human features of brain development and function.  相似文献
