The objective of this experiment was to examine the effects of feeding a vitamin A deficient diet (VAF) to pigs at different times on day 100 of foetal and days 0, 1 and 2 of neonatal development. Three treatments included a control (n = 12), VAF for 100 days before mating and during the first month of pregnancy (n = 13; VAF–control), and VAF during the oestrous cycle before mating and throughout pregnancy (n = 13; control–VAF). On day 100 of pregnancy, maternal liver and plasma retinol concentrations were reduced in both groups of gilts fed a vitamin A free diet compared to controls (P < 0.001 and P < 0.01, respectively). Day 100 foetal liver retinol concentrations were not affected by dietary treatment, whereas foetal plasma concentrations were higher in foetuses carried by gilts fed the VAF–control diet (P < 0.05). Piglets born to mothers fed the control–VAF, but not the VAF–control diet had consistently lower hepatic and plasma liver retinol concentrations (P < 0.05). Moderate reductions in maternal vitamin A at either stage of pregnancy did not affect pregnancy rate, litter size, progesterone secretion or the allometric relationships between foetal or neonatal organ and total body size. Reduced vitamin A during conception and early pregnancy, but not during later pregnancy, was associated with increased within-litter uniformity in birth weight (P < 0.05) and a tendency for fewer low birth weight piglets, but this needs to be confirmed in a greater number of sows. The mechanism underlying this effect is not known, but appears to not involve an alteration in progesterone production.  相似文献

We compared breeding avian communities among 11 habitat types in north-central Michoacán, Mexico, to determine patterns of forest use by endemic and nonendemic resident species. Point counts of birds and vegetation measurements were conducted at 124 sampling localities from May through July, in 1994 and 1995. Six native forest types sampled were pine, pine–oak, oak–pine, oak, fir, and cloud forests; three habitat types were plantations of Eucalyptus, pine, and mixed species; and the remaining two habitats were shrublands and pastures. Pastures had lower bird-species richness and abundance than pine, oak–pine, and mixed-species plantations. Pine forests had greater bird abundance and species richness than oak forests and shrublands. Species richness and abundance of endemics were greatest in fir forests, followed by cloud forests. Bird abundance and richness significantly increased with greater tree-layer complexity, although sites with intermediate tree complexity also supported high abundances. When detrended correspondence-analysis scores were plotted for each site, bird species composition did not differ substantially among the four native oak-and-pine forest types, but cloud and fir forests, Eucalyptus plantations, and mixed-species plantations formed relatively distinct groups. Plantations supported a mixture of species found in native forests, shrublands, and pastures. Pastures and shrublands shared many species in common, varied greatly among sites in bird-species composition, and contained more species specific to these habitats than did forest types.  相似文献

Bird strike is a significant problem for the aviation industry, caused in part by the attractiveness of the grass surrounding airports to birds. Endophyte‐infected grasses such as Avanex® have been shown to reduce bird populations at airports through the production of secondary metabolites. These metabolites are unpalatable to herbivorous, omnivorous and granivorous birds and are known to reduce insect densities, thereby making the sown areas less attractive to insectivorous birds. Raptors also provide a bird‐strike threat which could be reduced by controlling mouse populations around airports. In this study, the effect of endophyte‐infected seed on mouse feeding behaviour has been investigated. By performing a choice trial offering diets containing endophyte‐infected and endophyte‐free tall fescue seed, it was shown that endophyte‐infected seed was less palatable to mice (< 0·001 in a 14‐d trial). Furthermore, when diet positions were reversed, mouse feeding behaviour was modified to again select endophyte‐free material (< 0·001 over a further 14 d). This result shows that endophyte‐infected grasses could not only be used in the control of bird populations but they also have the potential to control mouse populations which in turn would decrease the number of raptors. This use of endophyte‐infected grasses in areas surrounding airport runways shows great promise for the aviation industry.  相似文献

The adaptation of a national/continental-scale model of carbon uptake to the local-scale using highly detailed airborne discrete lidar and hyperspectral data was investigated at a boreal forest mixedwood site in northern Ontario. Spatially explicit maps of canopy chlorophyll concentration and the fraction of photosynthetically active radiation absorbed by the canopy (FPAR) under direct and diffuse radiative conditions were developed for five time periods in 2004 (i.e., winter (January 1–May 31), leaf-out (June 1–20), summer (June 21–July 31 and August 1–31) and senescence (September 1–30)). The maps were used in conjunction with meteorological measurements, such as incident total and diffuse PAR, global solar radiation, and air temperature, taken on a flux tower which is located at the center of the study.Distinct spatial patterns in FPAR, a result of changes in canopy chlorophyll concentration, are increasingly evident throughout the season because of the variation in species groupings within the 1-km radius surrounding the flux tower. In general, the model shows a good correlation to flux-tower-measured gross ecosystem productivity (GEP) (r2 = 0.70 for 10-day averages throughout the year), with the largest deviations occurring in June–July. Species-level data shows the influence of a large homogenous patch of black spruce on the tower measured GEP and demonstrates the contribution of white birch, by far the most dominant species, to the total GEP for the area.  相似文献

Carrot fly (Psila rosae) is a serious pest of umbelliferous crops such as carrot, parsnip, celery and parsley. Carrot fly has been studied in the UK for more than 60 years. Whilst some of these studies have been focused on insecticides, others have demonstrated the potential for non‐insecticidal methods of control that might contribute to an integrated pest management strategy. These include rotation and spatial separation of susceptible crops; carrot varieties with partial resistance to carrot fly; and crop management strategies to avoid oviposition or the development of severe damage. This paper outlines some of the approaches that have been taken and indicates how these are, or might be, used in practice.  相似文献
