Analysis of the stocks available from threeSolanum germ plasm collections (Commonwealth Potato Collection, D. D. R. Sortiment and U. S. Potato Collection) shows that an adequate number of accessions are available for only a few species. Seventy-five of the 92 wild species being maintained are representd by fewer than 20 accessions. Development of activeSolanum germ plasm collections in the centers of diversity for these species eventually may provide the broader base of germ plasm needed for potato research.  相似文献

Fluctuations of serum vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol), cholesterol, and total lipids were monitored in 12 horses at 3-hour intervals for 72 hours. Mean coefficients of variation were 12, 5, and 15%, respectively. Statistical analyses were used to conclude that instrumentation error was accountable for only a small portion of the vitamin E variation. Results indicated that a single serum sample assay is an unsatisfactory indicator of vitamin E status in horses. These data have clinical application in the evaluation of horses suspected to be affected with equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy. The large variance of serum total lipids and the lack of correlation of it with serum vitamin E over time preclude the use of vitamin E/serum total lipids ratio in assessing vitamin E status.  相似文献

Four different age groups of cattle, which had never been exposed to Pb, were used to determine normal age-related values for erythrocyte delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity. Acute or chronic Pb intoxication was experimentally induced in young calves, and their ALAD values were compared with the normal values. Results indicated that ALAD of normal bovine erythrocytes increased 2- to 3-fold from 1 week to 9 weeks of age and then slowly returned to the initial (1 week old) value by 9 months of age. Erythrocyte ALAD from cattle greater than or equal to 9 months old was uniform. Because of the age-related changes in normal ALAD of cattle less than 9 months old, the age of an animal should be carefully established and age-matched controls evaluated simultaneously when ALAD is used to assess calves suspected of having Pb poisoning. A significant negative correlation was found between blood Pb concentration and ALAD during the first 24 hours after the initial administration of Pb, indicating a high sensitivity of erythrocyte ALAD to Pb. However, when blood Pb concentrations reached 50 micrograms/dl, ALAD did not change further. Because single ingestions of Pb can raise blood Pb concentrations greater than 50 micrograms/dl, ALAD appears to have little value in differentiating acute from chronic Pb intoxication. Within 7 days after Pb administration ceased, ALAD did not increase significantly, even when calves were given calcium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (CaNa2EDTA); however, blood Pb concentration decreased by 50%. The rapid change in blood Pb concentration gave a false indication of a positive treatment effect when no real effect was detected by ALAD.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Normal sensory nerve conduction velocity (SNCV) values in 8 ponies and 8 horses were compared by use of a percutaneous signal-averaging technique. Nerve fibers evaluated included those in the medial and lateral palmar and plantar digital nerves. Mean SNCV values were significantly slower (P less than 0.0002) for horses, compared with those values for ponies. Animal height and nerve segment length were inversely related to SNCV consistently. The SNCV values were affected by surface skin temperature by a factor of approximately 1.2 m/s change for 1 degree C change in temperatures from 35 C. The ability to calculate warning limits to define those SNCV values in normal and abnormal ranges were developed from these data for both ponies and horses.  相似文献

Although Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is a common disease in swine, there is a lack of prevention strategies. The objectives of this study were to evaluate: i) the effectiveness of Lactobacillus spp. and ii) non-toxigenic C. difficile (NTCD) as prevention for the development of CDI in piglets. Cesarean-derived piglets (N = 150) were randomly assigned to 6 groups: GROUP 1 — negative control (n = 10); GROUP 2 — NTCD only (n = 13); GROUP 3 — Lactobacillus spp. only (n = 14); GROUP 4 — positive control (challenged with toxigenic C. difficile strain) (n = 35); GROUP 5 — NTCD and challenged with the toxigenic C. difficile strain (n = 34); and GROUP 6 — Lactobacillus spp. and challenged with the toxigenic C. difficile strain (n = 44). Piglets which received NTCD showed lower prevalence of toxin-positive feces, mesocolonic edema, and microscopic lesions compared with positive control piglets. Administration of Lactobacillus spp. did not reveal clear benefits.  相似文献

Nitrogen flows in agroforestry systems can be quantified by applying excess 15N to one pool or part of the system and subsequentlymeasuring the quantity of 15N in other pools. Accurate quantifications depend on accurate determination of the mass, percentage N, and percentage 15N enrichment of each pool and past studies have mainly used physically isolated subplots to reduce variability. We thus assessed the within-plot and within-plant variability of 15N recovery by maize and by two hedgerow tree species, Gliricidia sepium and Peltophorum dasyrrachis, following applications of 15N-enriched materials to unbounded plots. We also assessed the potential for estimating total plant 15N recovery from a reduced set of samples, and for estimating N content allometrically from simple measurements. 15N uptake beyond 1 m radius was negligible in maize but recommended minimum inter-plot spacing for Gliricidia sepium and Peltophorum dasyrrachis was 8 m. Within-plant variation was also greater in trees than in maize. Calculating recovery from all crop plant components is not always necessary; the recovery of 15N in maize grain predicted 98.9% of variation in total plant 15N recovery. 89–95% accurate estimates of biomass and N content of maize plants and of regrowing tree shoots can be obtained non-destructively from height or basal shoot diameter respectively. 15N tracing techniques are potentially very useful for studies of competition and complementarity with respect to nitrogen uptake in agroforestry systems but they require unbounded plots and hence particular care in design and sampling procedures.
