The pathogenicity of Acremonium cucurbitacearum to 31 cucurbits, 18 crop plant species, and 15 weed species was evaluated under greenhouse conditions. This study demonstrates that many other cucurbits in addition to muskmelon and watermelon can potentially serve as hosts of A. cucurbitacearum . Using a disease severity index (DSI), all muskmelon and watermelon cultivars were ranked as susceptible or highly susceptible, with the exception of honeydew cultivar TAM Dew Improved, which ranked resistant in one study. Highly resistant cucurbits included Cucurbita maxima (autumn squash), Luffa acutangula , L. aegyptiaca (sponge gourd) and Benincasa hispida (ash gourd). Cyclanthera pedata and Cucumis miriocarpus were rated as resistant. The percentage recovery of A. cucurbitacearum ranged from 8% to 100% and tended to be higher in plants with a higher DSI. Other crops and weed species common to muskmelon production fields are not likely to be involved in the perpetuation or propagation of the fungus. 相似文献

Grazing-fed cattle were previously demonstrated to be reservoir of non-O157 Shigatoxigenic Escherichia coli (STEC) serotypes in Argentina. The acid-resistance of some STEC strains makes it reasonable to assume the presence in feedlot of particular STEC serotypes. Fifty-nine animals were sampled every 2 weeks during 6 months by rectal swabs. Twenty-seven of 59 animals (45.8%) were shown to be Stx2(+); 3/59 (5.1%) carried Stx1(+) and 7/59 (11.9%) were Stx1(+) Stx2(+). Among 44 STEC isolates, 31 isolates were associated to 10 O serogroups (O2, O15, O25, O103, O145, O146, O157, O171, O174, O175) and 13 were considered non-typable (NT). Six H antigens (H2, H7, H8, H19, H21, H25) were distributed in 21 isolates whereas 23 were non-mobile (H-). Seventeen of 44 strains (38.6%) were eaeA(+) and 14 (31.8%) harbored the 60MDa plasmid. The megaplasmid (Mp) and eaeA gene were simultaneously found in a limited number of serotypes belonging to the enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC). E. coli O157:H7 strains, isolated from four (6.8%) animals, corresponded to the Stx2(+), eaeA(+), Mp(+) pattern. Three O157:H7 strains belonged to phage type 4 and the other strain was atypical. Many serotypes isolated from grain-fed cattle (O2:H25, O15:H21, O25:H19, O145:H-, O146:H-, O146:H21, O157:H7, O175:H8) also differed from those isolated by us previously from grazing animals. The serotypes O15:H21, O25:H19 and O175:H8 had not been identified at present as belonging to STEC. This work provides new data for the understanding of the ecology of STEC in grain-fed cattle and confirms that cattle are an important reservoir of STEC. 相似文献

With 28% of the 350 species of parrots considered threatened, numerous conservation efforts have been initiated for these species. Among these, the restoration or establishment of new populations has increasingly relied on reintroductions as a conservation strategy, often with mixed or uncertain results. We reviewed the results and methodologies of 47 distinct releases and reintroductions of psittacines in nine different countries worldwide over the past 25 years to identify common denominators of successful efforts. To do so, we established a uniform and objective definition of reintroduction success (first-year survival >0.50 and released birds breeding with conspecifics, either captive-reared or wild), and applied generalized linear models and information-theoretic model selection to multiple datasets to identify important predictor variables. We identified several likely predictors of successful psittacine reintroductions, relating to predation mitigation, habitat quality, and post-release supplementation that may provide guidance for future efforts. We also advocate SWOT analysis for objectively evaluating the suitability of potential reintroduction sites. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate how different protein profiles of seminal plasma (SP) fractions affect sperm functionality in vitro. Ejaculates from three boars were separated into six fractions. The fractions differed from each other in their sperm content, in their total SP protein content, and their spermadhesin PSP-I/PSP-II and heparin-binding protein (HBP) concentrations. Spermatozoa were mainly recovered in fraction 2 (sperm-rich fraction, >1800 × 106 spermatozoa/ml), whereas the pre-sperm fraction 1 and the post-sperm fractions 4–6 contained low numbers of spermatozoa (<500 × 106 /ml). Except in fraction 2, the total SP protein concentration and the concentration of both, spermadhesin PSP-I/PSP-II and the HBPs increased with fraction order. Distinct time-dependent effects were observed on motility characteristics and membrane integrity of highly diluted boar spermatozoa upon incubation with a 10% dilution of the SP from each fraction. The highest sperm viability was recorded after exposure for 5 h to fraction 2, followed by fractions 1 and 3. The percentages of motile spermatozoa also differed significantly among fractions after 5 h of incubation. Spermatozoa incubated with SP of fractions 1–3 showed the highest percentage motility. We conclude that different SP fractions exert distinct effects on the functionality of highly diluted boar spermatozoa. Fractions 1–3 appear to promote sperm survival, whereas fractions 4–6 seem to be harmful for preserving the physiological functions of highly diluted boar spermatozoa. 相似文献

Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) are well-known prebiotic ingredients which can form the basis of new functional dairy products. In this work, the production and characterization of glycated beta-lactoglobulin (beta-LG) with prebiotic GOS through the Maillard reaction under controlled conditions ( a(w) = 0.44, 40 degrees C for 23 days) have been studied. The extent of glycation of beta-LG was evaluated by formation of furosine which progressively increased with storage for up to 16 days, suggesting that the formation of Amadori compounds prevailed over their degradation. RP-HPLC-UV, SDS-PAGE, and IEF profiles of beta-LG were modified as a consequence of its glycation. MALDI-ToF mass spectra of glycated beta-LG showed an increase of up to approximately 21% in its average molecular mass after storage for 23 days. Moreover, a decrease in unconjugated GOS (one tri-, two tetra-, and one pentasaccharide) was observed by HPAEC-PAD upon glycation. These results were confirmed by ESI MS. The stability of the glycated beta-LG to in vitro simulated gastrointestinal digestion was also described and compared with that of the unglycated protein. The yield of digestion products of glycated beta-LG was lower than that observed for the unglycated protein. The conjugation of prebiotic carbohydrates to stable proteins and peptides could open new routes of research in the study of functional ingredients. 相似文献
