We estimated the zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) balance in Japanese farmland soil in 1997. Zinc and Cu uptake by crops amounted to 563 Mg and 108 Mg, respectively, while Zn and Cu doses from chemical fertilizer were 297 Mg and 63 Mg, respectively. Zinc and Cu contents of livestock excreta were estimated to be 2,863 Mg and 713 Mg, and 1,551 Mg and 337 Mg of this was applied to farmland soil. As a result, there was an excess of 1,285 Mg of Zn and 292 Mg of Cu in farmland soil. This excess corresponded to 0.379% of the amount of total Zn and 0.270% of the amount of total Cu in farmland soil. Even if all excess Zn and Cu was accumulated in farmland soil, it would take more than 190 years to reach the permissible upper level of Zn, based on the average Zn concentration in non-polluted farmland soil. However, the promotion of the use of livestock excreta, especially pig excreta that contain high levels of Zn and Cu, may shorten the time required to reach the level. Although there are some guidelines, the recommended dose level has not clearly determined. Conventional dose of Zn applied through chemical fertilizer and manure is lower than the recommended Zn application level. Doses may depend on plant diagnosis and we should monitor the contamination of soils and crops with Zn and Cu, or the application might depend on other indicators like the Zn/cadmium ratio.  相似文献

This study presents the effects of short-term ozone exposure on the nano-scale growth behavior of the fine roots of Pinus densiflora (Japanese red pine) seedlings. Root elongation measurements were obtained in nanometers for very short (sub-second) time intervals by using the optical interference method called statistical interferometry, developed by the authors. Three categories of P. densiflora seedlings were investigated; two categories were infected with ectomycorrhiza of Pisolithus sp. (Ps) and Cenococcum geophilum (Cg), while the third was without any fungal infection. In experiments, two points on a root with a separation of 3 mm were illuminated by laser beams and the elongation was measured continuously by analyzing speckle patterns successively taken by a CCD camera. The ectomycorrhizal fungi-infected and uninfected seedlings were exposed to ozone at concentrations of 120 and 240 ppb for periods of 1, 3, or 5 h in separate treatments. The root elongations of P. densiflora seedlings were measured before and immediately after the each ozone treatment and then the root elongation rates (RER) were determined for growth-measurement periods of 5.5 s and 9.5 min. From the measurements obtained for 9.5 min, we found that the RERs of uninfected and Cg-infected seedlings were reduced by 42 and 18%, respectively, after 5 h of exposure to 120 ppb ozone compared with that before exposure, while the reduction in RER of Ps-infected seedlings was not significant. When the concentration of ozone was increased to 240 ppb, the RERs of Ps-infected and Cg-infected seedlings were reduced by 32 and 44%, respectively, after exposure for 5 h, while the reduction in RER of uninfected seedlings was 59%. These observations prove that the non-mycorrhizal seedling roots are more sensitive to ozone stress. From this study, we found that the RERs of both mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal seedlings apparently fluctuated throughout the measurements, even within a few minutes.  相似文献

Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV) is the causal agent of rhizomania, the most serious sugar beet disease worldwide. Since the first finding in Japan in 1969, BNYVV became widespread throughout Hokkaido in a few decades and led to the introduction of Rz1-resistant sugar beet cultivars in the 1990s. Here, we report the historical progress of the BNYVV epidemic in Hokkaido from 1969 to 2019. Previous analysis on samples from 1991 showed that BNYVV isolates were classified into three strains (named O, D, and T) based on the RNA3-encoded p25 gene. The O-type viruses were widely detected in Hokkaido, while the D- and T-type viruses were detected in limited areas. The RNA5, encoding the p26 gene, was initially contained in some D- and O-type isolates but not in any T-type isolates. Interestingly, recent sample analysis revealed that RNA5-containing T-type viruses, seemingly more virulent than the other two strains, were widely detected in Hokkaido. Additionally, a small group of virus isolates harbouring a new p25 gene (named C) was found in limited areas. These results suggest that the T-type viruses, which accompanied RNA5, have been preferentially spread from a limited area to other districts over the last few decades and that this spread might be strongly associated with the recent introduction of Rz1-resistant sugar beet cultivars. BNYVV-positive samples also contained mainly beet soil-borne virus and traces of beet virus Q, both of which are the first to be recorded in Japan.  相似文献

Effects of heterogeneity in stomatal behavior on gas-exchange characteristics of leaves from four tree species growing in different climates, including temperate, tropical monsoon and tropical rain forest, were investigated by combining gas-exchange measurements and the pressure-infiltration method. Field observations indicated linear relationships between whole-leaf conductance and the ratio of infiltrated to non-infiltrated leaf area (open stomata area) in Dipterocarpus sublamellatus Foxw. and Neobalanocarpus heimii (King) Ashton in a tropical rain forest in Peninsular Malaysia, whereas the ratio of infiltrated to non-infiltrated area rapidly increased up to the whole-leaf conductance at which the entire leaf was infiltrated in Cinnamomum camphora Sieb. in a temperate evergreen forest in Japan and in Azadirachta indica Juss. in a tropical monsoon area in Thailand. These results strongly suggest small ranges in bell-shaped stomatal conductance distributions in C. camphora and A. indica and bimodal stomatal conductance distributions in D. sublamellatus and N. heimii. The values of normalized maximum carboxylation rate at 25 degrees C (V(cmax25)) derived from gas-exchange measurements were not constant, but decreased with decreasing whole-leaf conductance in D. sublamellatus and N. heimii. A gas-exchange model analysis revealed a linear relationship between whole-leaf conductance and the ratio of infiltrated to non-infiltrated leaf area for bimodal stomatal conductance distributions, whereas for bell-shaped distributions, the relationships were nonlinear. Midday depression of apparent V(cmax25) in these species was mainly caused by bimodal stomatal closure. The bimodal stomatal distribution model could also explain diurnal changes in photosynthetic assimilation and transpiration rates in these species.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to describe the shape of the pectinate ligament (PL) and to estimate the width of the iridocorneal angle (ICA) in glaucomatous and non-glaucomatous eye of Shiba Inu dogs in Japan. One hundred fourteen Shiba Inu dogs were presented to the Veterinary Medical Center at the University of Tokyo between June 1998 and June 2003. Among these, 46 dogs had glaucoma; the remaining 68 dogs were presented for routine vaccinations or heartworm testing and were used as a control population. Complete ophthalmic examination and gonioscopy were performed in all the dogs. PL and ICA were evaluated by gonioscopy and goniophotographs. Of the 46 dogs with glaucoma, 17 (37%) were affected bilaterally, and 29 (63%) were affected unilaterally. Of the 29 dogs with unilateral glaucoma, the ICA of the normotensive eye was slightly narrow in 2 eyes (7%), narrow in 12 eyes (41%), and closed in 15 eyes (52%). Among the normotensive control group, the ICA was open in 13 dogs (19%), slightly narrow in 29 (43%), narrow in 22 (32%), and closed in 4 (6%). In dogs with narrow and slightly narrow ICAs, the PLs were thickened, and in some cases, formed a solid sheet. The majority of dogs with glaucoma had changes in both ICA and PL. A narrow or slightly narrow ICA was also detected in the majority of normotensive control dogs. This study suggests that ICA narrowing and PL thickening is a common abnormality in Shiba Inu dogs in Japan and may predispose those dogs to glaucoma.  相似文献

A 10‐year‐old castrated male miniature dachshund was presented with an abdominal mass. The dog had a history of splenectomy. Triple‐phase helical computed tomography was utilized, revealing a hepatic mass and multiple intra‐abdominal solid masses. In triple‐phase helical computed tomography the images, hepatic mass and two of four intra‐abdominal masses were heterogenous in all phases. Therefore, we diagnosed a malignant hepatic tumor and presumed intra‐abdominal metastases. The masses were surgically removed and were histologically composed of normal spleen tissues, findings which were consistent with ectopic spleen.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

To successfully afforest coastal forest belts ensuring high disaster prevention, growth bases for them have been constructed by piling up soil in the low wetlands along the Kujukuri coastline. Ground surfaces in such bases are often covered with water because of soil compaction, leaving them susceptible to stagnant water. Water stagnation in soil is problematic, potentially interfering with afforesting coastal forests. Therefore, row deep tillage was conducted for parts of growth bases to combat the poor physical properties of the existing soil. Here, we surveyed soil profiles and measured vertical soil hardness distribution in two forest stands with piling up soil to evaluate the effectiveness of tillage for man-made soil. Soil hardness measurements indicated that the vertical areas with ‘soft’ and ‘hard/consolidated’ soil alternately appeared in growth base profiles. Generally, soil of the dense and very hard layers was apt to be formed by strong compaction of the filled-up soil because of heavy machinery usage during growth base preparation. Such dense and hard soils in the untilled areas of the profiles were also observed in this study. By contrast, it was confirmed that row deep tillage drastically improved soil physical properties, i.e., decreased hardness and increased water permeability, because the sequential hardened subsoil layers were well-broken-up. Moreover, it was observed many thick and large roots penetrated deeper layers with deep tillage areas. These results suggest that row deep tillage of hardened soil is quite effective at securing the areas and providing the physical conditions for deeply penetrated roots into deeper soils, which increases healthy root development. They show the effects of soil hardness reduction and water permeability improvement have been maintained for two decades, at least, after construction. These findings will be useful for alleviating some problems of soil compaction, water stagnation, and tree-growth hindrance that have been encountered on afforestation sites with man-made soil.  相似文献

To evaluate the efficacy of clinical staging based on computed tomography (CT) imaging over the World Health Organization (WHO) staging system based on radiography for nasal tumors in dogs, a retrospective study was conducted. This study used 112 dogs that had nasal tumors; they had undergone radiography and CT and had been histologically confirmed as having nasal tumors. Among 112 dogs, 85 (75.9%) were diagnosed as adenocarcinoma. Then they were analyzed for survival time according to each staging system. More than 70% of the patients with adenocarcinoma were classified as having WHO stage III. The patients classified under WHO stage II tended to survive longer than those classified under WHO stage III. Dogs classified under WHO stage III were further grouped into CT stages III and IV, and CT stage III patients had a significantly longer survival time than CT stage IV patients. In addition, patients treated with a combination of surgery and radiation had a significantly longer survival time than the patients who did not receive any treatment in CT stage III. On the other hand, different treatment modalities did not show a significant difference in the survival time of CT stage IV dogs. The results suggest that WHO stage III dogs may have various levels of tumor progression, indicating that the CT staging system may be more accurate than the WHO staging system.  相似文献
