Responses of the major mitochondrial respiratory enzyme succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity in gill and muscle tissue of tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) were investigated upon their transfer to a new pond habitat. Sixty healthy adult fish were procured from each of the three ponds used and were distributed in three cages in equal numbers; the cages were placed in each of the other two ponds as well as into original rearing pond. Four fish were removed from each cage every week and were sacrificed for the assay of SDH activity in gills and muscles. Transfer of fish from a stress condition to a benign environment and vice versa resulted in an increase and decrease in SDH activity of fish, respectively. The intensity of increase upon transfer was again dependent upon the amount of stress in the new habitat. In general, the SDH activity of the test fish strongly correlated with the ammonia concentration (P?<?0.05) of water regardless of habitats. Time required for the introduced fish to acclimatize with new environmental conditions was dependent upon the environmental milieu of both its initial and final place of rearing and hence their physiological states. Differences in water quality, especially ammonia concentration, between its original place of rearing and the place of transfer were found to be responsible for the differences in acclimation period of two or three weeks. Relatively less difference in ammonia (2.68 for gills and 3.20 for muscles) between the initial place of rearing and new habitat resulted in acclimation of the fish one week earlier (second week) than the relatively wide difference (4.46 for gills and 5.62 for muscles) for third week. It may be reasonable to conclude that the varied responses of the mitochondrial respiratory enzyme of exogenously introduced fishes with the differences in the water quality—especially the ammonia concentration of ambient water between the original fish holding pond and growout pond—can be used to predict the time that will be required for the exogenously introduced fish to fully acclimatize with the new habitat.  相似文献

The recent discovery in hops of trans-resveratrol and its glucoside, trans-piceid, both famous in wine for their potential role in the "French paradox", opens new doors to understanding hop health benefits. In the present work, trans-resveratrol and trans-piceid were quantified by HPLC-APCI-MS/MS in 40 American and European hop cone samples from harvests of 2004, 2005, and 2006. Their content varies greatly, in the range 0.5-12 mg/kg. All German varieties revealed low amounts of stilbenes. The highest concentrations were found in Cascade (2004) and Willamette (2004 and 2006), two American low-alpha-acid varieties. Yet, probably because trans-resveratrol is a phytoalexin, a strong influence of harvest year was also observed.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the species and distribution of ticks infesting domestic dogs in southern Mozambique. To this end 89 collections were taken from dogs and the geographic coordinates of the localities at which they were made noted. Fifty-eight of these collections were from animals in the city of Maputo and 16 from animals at rural settlements close to Maputo. A further 15 collections were made from dogs in rural environments north of Maputo. Ten ixodid tick species, of which one was only identified to genus level, were recovered. Rhipicephalus sanguineus was the most numerous of the ten species, and its prevalence and intensity of infestation were significantly higher on city dogs than on rural dogs (P < 0.01), whereas the converse was true for Haemaphysalis leachi (P < 0.01). Including the city of Maputo, the exact localities at which nine tick species were collected, were recorded.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA sequences isolated from ancient dog remains from Latin America and Alaska showed that native American dogs originated from multiple Old World lineages of dogs that accompanied late Pleistocene humans across the Bering Strait. One clade of dog sequences was unique to the New World, which is consistent with a period of geographic isolation. This unique clade was absent from a large sample of modern dogs, which implies that European colonists systematically discouraged the breeding of native American dogs.  相似文献

Ethylenediamine-N,N'bis(o-hydroxyphenyl)acetic acid (o,o-EDDHA) is one of the most efficient iron chelates employed to relieve iron chlorosis in plants. However, the presence of positional isomers of EDDHA in commercial iron chelates has been recently demonstrated, and among them, it has been claimed that ethylenediamine-N(o-hydroxyphenylacetic)-N'(p-hydroxyphenylacetic) acid (o,p-EDDHA) is the main impurity present in EDDHA fertilizers. Here we report the preparation of o,p-EDDHA, a compound whose synthesis had not been previously reported. The synthetic o,p-EDDHA is able to form ferric complexes, and it has been used as a standard in the analysis of the impurities of commercial iron fertilizers. The presence of o,p-EDDHA/Fe(3+) in commercial samples has been unambiguously demonstrated by HPLC.  相似文献

A test mixture of five pesticides and metabolites (naphthalene acetamide, carbaryl, 1-naphthol, thiabendazole, and carbendazime) has been investigated by capillary electrophoresis with an ultraviolet diode array detector. These compounds were separated in <10 min by micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MEKC). MEKC was performed in 30 mM ammonium chloride/ammonia buffer (pH 9.0) containing 15 mM sodium dodecyl sulfate. The lowest detection limit was obtained for the insecticide carbaryl (0.22 microg mL(-)(1)) and the highest for its metabolite 1-naphthol (1.13 microg mL(-)(1)). This method was applied to the analysis of the pesticides in cultivated vegetables such as cucumbers, which were extracted with a liquid-liquid extraction procedure, obtaining recovery percentages ranging from 90.1 to 110.2%.  相似文献

Thirty-four durum wheat cultivars representing the Tunisian durum (Triticum durum Desf.) wheat collection and seven wild species of wheat relatives (Triticum turgidum L., T. dicoccon Schrank., T. dicoccoides (Körn) Schweinf., T. araraticum Jakubz., T. monococcum L., Aegilops geniculata Roth, and Aegilops ventricosa Tausch) were analysed with amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and microsatellite (SSR) markers. Both marker systems used were able to differentiate durum wheat cultivars from the wild relatives and to specifically fingerprint each of the genotypes studied. However, the two marker systems differed in the amount of detected polymorphisms. The 15 SSR markers were highly polymorphic across all the genotypes. The total number of amplified fragments was 156 and the number of alleles per locus ranged from 3 to 24 with an average of 10.4. Two SSR markers alone, Xwms47 and Xwms268, were sufficient to distinguish all 34 durum wheat genotypes. The five AFLP primer pair combinations analysed yielded a total of 293 bands, of which 31% were polymorphic. The highest polymorphic information content (PIC) value was observed for SSRs (0.68) while the highest marker index (MI) value was for AFLPs (7.16) reflecting the hypervariability of the first and the distinctive nature of the second system. For durum wheat cultivars, the genetic similarity values varied between 31.3 and 81% for AFLPs (with an average of 54.2%), and between 3.6 and 72.7% for SSRs (with an average of 19.9%). The rank correlation between the two marker systems was moderate, with r = 0.57, but highly significant. Based on SSR markers, highest genetic similarity (GS) values were observed within the modern cultivars (37.3%), while the old cultivars showed a low level of GS (19.9%). Moreover, the modern cultivars showed low PIC and MI values. UPGMA Cluster analysis based on the combined AFLP and SSR data separated the wild wheat species from the durum wheat cultivars. The modern cultivars were separated from the old cultivars and form a distinct group.  相似文献
