Excavations at Quebrada Jaguay 280 (QJ-280) (16 degrees30'S) in south coastal Peru demonstrated that Paleoindian-age people of the Terminal Pleistocene (about 11,100 to 10,000 carbon-14 years before the present or about 13,000 to 11,000 calibrated years before the present) in South America relied on marine resources while resident on the coast, which extends the South American record of maritime exploitation by a millennium. This site supports recent evidence that Paleoindian-age people had diverse subsistence systems. The presence of obsidian at QJ-280 shows that the inhabitants had contact with the adjacent Andean highlands during the Terminal Pleistocene.  相似文献

It is shown that lagged correlations for and cross-correlations between observed hemispheric-mean temperature data differ markedly from those for unforced (control-run) climate model simulations. The differences can be explained adequately by assuming that the observed data contain a significant externally forced component involving both natural (solar) and anthropogenic influences and that the global climate sensitivity is in the commonly accepted range. Solar forcing alone cannot reconcile the differences in autocorrelation structure between observations and model control-run data.  相似文献

A transition from metal-like double-layer capacitive charging to redox-like charging was observed in electrochemical ensemble Coulomb staircase experiments on solutions of gold nanoparticles of varied core size. The monodisperse gold nanoparticles are stabilized by short-chain alkanethiolate monolayers and have 8 to 38 kilodaltons core mass (1.1 to 1.9 nanometers in diameter). Larger cores display Coulomb staircase responses consistent with double-layer charging of metal-electrolyte interfaces, whereas smaller core nanoparticles exhibit redox chemical character, including a large central gap. The change in behavior is consistent with new near-infrared spectroscopic data showing an emerging gap between the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied orbitals of 0.4 to 0.9 electron volt.  相似文献

The Canadian Basin of the Arctic Ocean, largely ice covered and isolated from deep contact with the more dynamic Eurasian Basin by the Lomonosov Ridge, has historically been considered an area of low productivity and particle flux and sluggish circulation. High-sensitivity mass-spectrometric measurements of the naturally occurring radionuclides protactinium-231 and thorium-230 in the deep Canada Basin and on the adjacent shelf indicate high particle fluxes and scavenging rates in this region. The thorium-232 data suggest that offshore advection of particulate material from the shelves contributes to scavenging of reactive materials in areas of permanent ice cover.  相似文献

Leptin and peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) are adipogenic proteins that are actively involved in metabolic homeostasis of fat. Recently, it was reported that fat tissue in humans and rodents differs in metabolic activity relative to anatomical location of the fat tissue (i.e. depots) and animal age. Hence, we hypothesized that leptin and PPARγ production in various fat depots in female pigs differs in response to acute fasting, and that these responses vary with physiological maturity of the animal. Sixteen intact crossbred immature female pigs [prepubertal (PP); 132.2 ± 4.1 days] and 16 sexually mature female pigs (M; 224 ± 7.4 days) housed in an open‐air, concrete slab, sheltered barn were randomly assigned to either Control or Fasted treatments. Control pigs (PP, n = 8; M, n = 8) had ad libitum access to feed, while Fasted pigs (PP, n = 8; M, n = 8) were denied access to feed from the onset of the study (0 h) to euthanasia at 72 h. Immediately post‐mortem, fat samples were collected from the subcutaneous, pelvic, kidney, and heart (M pigs only) fat depots and analysed for leptin and PPARγ mRNA and protein content. Acute fasting decreased mean leptin mRNA tissue content in a depot specific manner in M pigs (p < 0.01), while mean leptin protein concentrations in fat tissues did not differ with fat depot or age of the pig. Furthermore, acute fasting did not affect mean PPARγ mRNA tissue content in a fat depot or age dependent manner. Mean concentrations of PPARγ protein in fat depots tended to be greater in M vs. PP pigs (p = 0.07). We suggest that these data provide evidence that acute fasting has a greater effect on leptin than PPARγ production in a fat depot dependent manner in M pigs, which may be indicative of changing physiological demands as an animal matures.  相似文献

The aims of the present study were to monitor the nucleolar cycle in Mongolian gerbil spermiogenesis, to verify the relationship between the nucleolar component and chromatoid body (CB) formation and to investigate the function of this cytoplasmic supramolecular structure in spermatogenic cells. Histological sections of adult seminiferous tubules were analysed cytochemically by light microscopy and ultrastructurally by transmission electron microscopy. The results reveal that in early spermatids, the CB was visualized in association with Golgi vesicles indicating that this structure may participate in the acrosome formation process as had been reported in other rodents. In late spermatids, the CB was observed near the axoneme region suggesting that this structure may support spermatozoon tail formation as happens in other species. Chromatoid body was joined with lipid droplets in this same cell type. This observation should be investigated to verify whether CB may be related to steroidal hormone metabolism. In conclusion, our data showed that there is disintegration of primary spermatocyte nucleoli at the beginning of prophase I and a fraction of this nucleolar material migrates to the cytoplasm, where a specific structure is formed, known as the ‘chromatoid body’, which apparently participates in some parts of the gerbil spermiogenesis process.  相似文献

The study evaluated, in early post‐partum anoestrous Nelore cows, if the increase in plasma oestradiol (E2) concentrations in the pre‐ovulatory period and/or progesterone priming (P4 priming) preceding ovulation, induced by hormonal treatment, reduces the endogenous release of prostaglandin PGF2αand prevents premature lysis of the corpus luteum (CL). Nelore cows were subjected to temporary calf removal for 48 h and divided into two groups: GPE/eCG group (n = 10) and GPG/eCG group (n = 10). Animals of the GPE/eCG group were treated with a GnRH agonist. Seven days later, they received 400 IU of eCG, immediately after PGF2α treatment, and on day 0, 1.0 mg of oestradiol benzoate (EB). Cows of the GPG/eCG group were similarly treated as those of the GPE/eCG group, except that EB was replaced with a second dose of GnRH. All animals were challenged with oxytocin (OT) 9, 12, 15 and 18 days after EB or GnRH administration and blood samples were collected before and 30 min after OT. Irrespective of the treatments, a decline in P4 concentration on day 18 was observed for cows without P4 priming. However, animals exposed to P4 priming, treated with EB maintained high P4 concentrations (8.8 ± 1.2 ng/ml), whereas there was a decline in P4 on day 18 (2.1 ± 1.0 ng/ml) for cows that received GnRH to induce ovulation (p < 0.01). Production of 13,14‐dihydro‐15‐keto prostaglandin F2α (PGFM) in response to OT increased between days 9 and 18 (p < 0.01), and this increase tended to be more evident in animals not exposed to P4 priming (p < 0.06). In conclusion, the increase in E2 during the pre‐ovulatory period was not effective in inhibiting PGFM release, which was lower in P4‐primed than in non‐primed animals. Treatment with EB promoted the maintenance of elevated P4 concentrations 18 days after ovulation in P4‐primed animals, indicating a possible beneficial effect of hormone protocols containing EB in animals with P4 priming.  相似文献
