The pike silverside has high aquaculture potential despite its slow growth. In this study, thyroxine (T4) concentrations (0.13, 1.3 and 13 nM), a control with no hormonal supplement and a negative control containing 4.5 mM methimazole (MMI) were tested to evaluate the growth of this species. Juveniles (0.2 g) were exposed by immersion to these treatments for 8 h every second day for 120 days, and growth evaluations were performed monthly over the entire trial period. In addition, tissue samples from each treatment group were assayed for triiodothyronine (T3) and deiodinase type 2 (D2) activity . The survival rates in all T4 groups were high, and a significant increase in growth was observed (average of 58%). The MMI treatment caused an increase in mortality and a reduction in the final body weight compared with the control. T4 administration did not affect the tissue levels of T3, and it decreased muscular D2 activity only after 30 days of exposure. These results demonstrated that low concentrations of T4 in the culture environment could improve the growth of this species without affecting tissue hormone levels. The technique may have useful applications for early‐stage aquaculture of this and other economically important species.  相似文献

A principle concern for aquaculturists and aquarium hobbyists is the control and removal of dissolved organic matter. Granular activated carbon is a well-established medium for the adsorption of dissolved organic substances associated with these issues. The selection of activated carbon for aquaria and aquaculture is not well established due to innate heterogeneity of these waters. The means to completely characterize adsorption between carbon sources are generally not available to end users provided their level of expertise and/or resources at their disposal. This study introduces a relatively simple method for characterizing activated carbon quality and filter performance utilizing readily available and relatively safe indicator compounds to test adsorptive capabilities between different sources of granular activated carbon. Methylene blue and a commercial mix of humic and tannic substances were used to comparatively test adsorptive performance between two filter groups (i.e., sources of granular activated carbon) by tracking spectral absorbance with nonlinear regression statistics and validating removal trends against mature aquaculture water. Greater adsorptive capacities were consistently observed in one filter group throughout the indicator testing battery. Similar findings were observed between the two indicator tests, thereby confirming the method. This method can be adopted by commercial aquaculture operations or aquarists to assist in comparatively screening particular types, particle sizes, and sources of granular activated carbon for specific water quality and engineering requirements.  相似文献

Chemical treatments in wet milling could improve the physico‐chemical properties of starch isolated from high‐tannin sorghums. Sorghums Chirimaugute (medium‐tannin), DC‐75 (high‐tannin), and SV2 (tannin‐free) were steeped in water, dilute HCl (0.9%, v/v), formaldehyde (0.05%, v/v), and NaOH (0.3%, w/v) solutions before wet milling and starch separation. Pasting, textural, and thermal properties of starch were determined. Steeping in NaOH resulted in starches with higher peak viscosity (PV), cool paste viscosity (CPV), and setback than when water, HCl, and formaldehyde were used. The time to PV (Ptime) and PV temperature (Ptemp) were markedly reduced by treatment with NaOH. NaOH could have caused a degree of pregelatinization. HCl treatment gave starches with higher Ptemp and P time, presumably due to delayed granule swelling. Gel hardness was largely determined by the starch amylase content. The low hardness of DC‐75 starch gels was slightly improved in NaOH‐treated grains. Gelatinization temperatures of sorghum starches were generally low, regardless of steeping treatment. Starch from NaOH‐treated grain generally had slightly higher gelatinization temperatures than when water, HCl, or HCHO was used. Chemical treatments during steeping of sorghum grains greatly affected starch properties. Dilute alkali steeping during wet milling could be used to improve properties of starch isolated from tannin‐containing sorghums.  相似文献

State yield contests offer a unique opportunity to examine the high end of crop productivity. Yield-contest-entered and average-yielding areas on the same or a similar soil can provide large yield and soil property variations to better examine the relationships among various near-surface soil properties and soybean (Glycine max L. [Merr.]) yield. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationships among a suite of near-surface soil properties and soybean yield across average- and high-yield areas using state yield-contest sites. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to evaluate best-fit relationships among various soil physical, chemical, and biological properties and yield separately for average- and high-yielding areas and for data combined across yield areas. Soybean yield variation was most explained for the high-yield-area dataset (R2 = 73%) and less explained for the average-yield-area (R2 = 51%) and the combined (R2 = 50%) datasets. Extractable soil Ca and S explained the largest proportion of yield variation (37% and 31% of total sum of squares) in the high-yield setting and both were inversely related to yield. A better understanding of the soil environment may be a key component of more frequent attainment of the 6270 kg ha?1 (100 bu acre?1) soybean yield mark. Additional soil properties, beyond those evaluated in this study, may need to be included for a more complete understanding of the soil environment that is associated with high-yield soybean production.  相似文献
