Pretreatment of rhesus macaques with nonlethal total-body x-irradiation (400 R) prolonged survival time from an average of 15 hours to 101 hours after intravenous (IV) inoculation of 50 microgram of staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB)/kg of body weight. Radiation exposure per se did not produce detectable cardiorenal changes; however, the longer survival after SEB challenge exposure in x-irradiated rhesus macaques was associated with improved cardiorenal functions if compared with that of nonirradiated macaques given the same dose of SEB. Total-body radiation exposure 4 days prior to IV SEB inoculation prevented typical SEB-induced decreases (where measured at 5 hours) in cardiac output, stroke volume, TcH2O, CPAH, Cosm, and urine flow, as well as increases in total peripheral and renal resistance. A theory concerning the significance of radiation-induced leukopenia on modification of SEB-induced cardiorenal functions is postulated.  相似文献   

Preservation of striated-muscle urethral sphincter function with use of a surgical technique for perineal urethrostomy in cats

It has been reported that perineal urethrostomy resulted in impairment of striated-muscle urethral sphincter function in male cats, as measured by urethral pressure profilometry and electromyography (EMG). Our study was undertaken to describe and evaluate a surgical technique for perineal urethrostomy that reduces trauma to the urethral branches of the pudendal nerve. Perineal urethrostomy was performed on 10 healthy neutered cats after demonstrating that they had normal urethral sphincter function by urethral pressure profilometry (maximal urethral closure pressure [MUCP] = 151 +/- 52 cm of water) and EMG activity at the level of the striated-muscle sphincter before surgery. All cats had normal urethral sphincter function 1 week (MUCP = 194 +/- 19 cm of water, EMG activity present) and 3 weeks (MUCP greater than 200 cm of water, EMG activity present) after surgery. These results indicated that preservation of the urethral branches of the pudendal nerve during urethrostomy preserved striated-muscle urethral sphincter function.  相似文献   

The Impact of Aquaculture Pond Engineering Design on the Returns to Shrimp Farms

The effects of pond design on the internal rate of return of a 40 ha shrimp farm is evaluated. The influence of four pond construction parameters (pond size, pond shape, levee crown size and canal bank slope) on the total amount of earth moved and construction costs is determined using an engineering design model. The bioeconomic model, MARSIM, calculates returns to farms with the design modifications. Of the four parameters, the pond shape is the most influential over the range considered (from 17% to 8%). Pond size is the second most important parameter (from 17% to 21%). Levee width and canal bank slope influence are of lesser importance (<1% change).  相似文献   

Stocking Strategies and an Investment Analysis for Producing Penaeus setiferus as a Live Bait-Shrimp on the Texas Gulf Coast

An economic and investment analysis was performed to determine the viability of bait-shrimp farming in Texas. A single pond analysis producing 5–5.5g shrimp always had higher returns above selected cost (RASC) than producing 4–4.5g shrimp. Stocking 0.01g shrimp had a higher RASC than stocking 0.25g, 0.50g or 0.75g shrimp. In the 20 pond analysis, which accounted for marketing considerations, stocking 0.25g shrimp had the highest RASC. The investment analysis, assuming average management, was declared bankrupt by the end of the fifth year. Under "excellent" management the internal rate of return was only 11.7%. It is unlikely that bait-shrimp farming will become a viable industry in Texas in the near future.  相似文献

Evoked response and behavior in cats

Electroencephalographic averaged evoked responses to flashing lights of four different intensities were recorded in ten cats and correlated with behavior. Animals showing a high degree of exploratory behavior, aggressiveness, and activity and little withdrawal showed relatively large increases in amplitude of the averaged evoked response with increases of stimulus intensity. Those showing opposite behavioral traits had small increases or decreases of average evoked response amplitude with increases of stimulus intensity. These findings are compatible with those reported for human subjects. Inference is made about a neurophysiological mechanism for stimulus intensity modulation.  相似文献

Results of this study confirm that dietary supplementation in dogs with a natural source of omega-3 fatty acids (salmon oil), with a docosahexaenoic acid:eicosapentaenoic acid (DHA:EPA) ratio of 1.5:1, increases plasma and red blood cell levels of these fatty acids. Supplementation with this DHA-enriched oil improves the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid omega-6:omega-3 (n-6:n-3) ratio, which may benefit dogs of all ages. Studies describing some of the neurologic, renal, cardiovascular, immune, and musculoskeletal effects of elevated blood levels of n-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, are reviewed. The importance of providing an enriched source of DHA, instead of its shorter precursors, is emphasized.  相似文献   

Rush allergen specific immunotherapy protocol in feline atopic dermatitis: a pilot study of four cats

Rush immunotherapy has been shown to be as safe as conventional immunotherapy in canine atopic patients. Rush immunotherapy has not been reported in the feline atopic patient. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine a safe protocol for rush immunotherapy in feline atopic patients. Four atopic cats diagnosed by history, physical examination and exclusion of appropriate differential diagnoses were included in the study. Allergens were identified via liquid phase immunoenzymatic testing (VARL: Veterinary Allergy Reference Labs, Pasadena, CA). Cats were premedicated with 1.5 mg triamcinolone orally 24 and 2 h prior to first injection and 10 mg hydroxyzine PO 24, 12 and 2 h prior to first injection. An intravenous catheter was placed prior to first injection. Allergen extracts (Greer Laboratories, Lenoir, North Carolina) were all administered subcutaneously at increasing protein nitrogen units (pnu) every 30 minutes for 5 h to maintenance dose of 15,000 pnus ml-1. Vital signs were assessed every 15 minutes. Two cats developed mild pruritus and the subsequent injection was delayed 30 minutes. No changes in either cat's vital signs were noted, nor was there any further pruritus. All four cats successfully completed rush immunotherapy. Two cats developed a dermal swelling on the dorsal neck one week later. In these four cats, this protocol appeared to be a safe regimen to reach maintenance therapy. A larger sample of feline patients is needed to determine the incidence of adverse reactions and to follow the success of ASIT based upon this method of induction.  相似文献
