The first Mesoamerican civilization, the Gulf Coast Olmec, is associated with hierarchical society, monumental art, and an internally consistent ideology, expressed in a distinct style and salient iconography. Whether the Olmec style arose in just one area or emerged from interactions among scattered contemporaneous societies remains controversial. Using elemental analysis, we determined the regional clay sources of 725 archaeological ceramic samples from across Mesoamerica. Exported Olmec-style ceramics originated from the San Lorenzo region of the Gulf Coast, supporting Olmec priority in the creation and spread of the first unified style and iconographic system in Mesoamerica.  相似文献

Episodic acidification of surface waters has been observed in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, similar to other forested watersheds with base-poor bedrock in the eastern US receiving acids from atmospheric deposition. Three remote, forested, high-elevation streams were selected in the Little Pigeon River watershed for study; two of which brook trout have extirpated, and believed to have resulted from severe acidity during stormflows. This research characterized stream chemistry during episodes in order to better understand potential factors that contribute to rapid drops in pH and acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) during stormflows. Autosamplers initialized by sondes, collected samples during storm events for analysis of pH, ANC, cations, and anions over a 15-month period. ANC and pH depressions, and increased concentrations in sulfate, nitrate, and organic acids were observed for all storms at each study site. ANC contribution analysis indicated sulfate was the strongest contributor to ANC depressions, but nitrate, cation dilution, and organic acids were also significant in some cases. Acidic deposition appears to be the primary source of episodic acidification, supported also by the finding that larger stormflows preceded by long, dry periods resulted in significantly larger pH depressions. It appears stream acidification episodes may be driven by acid deposition. However, this study documents the variability of several ion contributors to observed stormflow ANC depressions illustrating the spatial and temporal complexity of watershed processes that influence this phenomenon.  相似文献

The TFP1 gene of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae encodes two proteins: the 69-kilodalton (kD) catalytic subunit of the vacuolar proton-translocating adenosine triphosphatase (H(+)-ATPase) and a 50-kD protein. The 69-kD subunit is encoded by the 5' and 3' thirds of the TFP1 coding region, whereas the 50-kD protein is encoded by the central third. Evidence is presented that both the 69-kD and 50-kD proteins are obtained from a single translation product that is cleaved to release the 50-kD protein and spliced to form the 69-kD subunit.  相似文献

Complete blood counts, differential white blood cell and platelet counts were performed on male and female BB Wistar diabetic rats (BBWd), their nondiabetic siblings (BBWnd) and outbred Wistar rats of the line from which the BB Wistar rats were derived. Most of the observed changes were strain-related (those present in both BBWd and BBWnd but not in control rats) rather than diabetes-related (those in BBWd but neither BBWnd nor control rats) and therefore probably due to the inbreeding process. The BBW strain had significantly lower numbers of white cells and platelets, as well as markedly changed differential white cell counts. Differential counts showed a pattern of lymphopenia, neutrophilia, monocytosis and eosinophilia. It is possible that these white blood cell changes contribute to the increased susceptibility to infection reported for the BBW strain. No significant difference in serum immunoglobulin concentrations was found in any of these three groups of rats. There- fore, hypogammaglobutinemia cannot account for the increased susceptibility to infections, but it is not possible to rule out an abnormality in the distribution of immunoglobulin fractions as an etiological factor.  相似文献

Treatment with the dopamine precursor L-dopa produced a significant accumulation of adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cyclic AMP) in the caudate nucleus of the rat. In contrast, there was no change in the amount of cyclic AMP in the cerebellum. Accumulation of cyclic AMP in the caudate nucleus after administration of L-dopa was prevented by prior treatment with the decarboxylase inhibitor RO 4-4602. These observations and those in other laboratories support the assumption that dopamine formed from L-dopa selectively activates striatal adenylate cyclase. The in vivo activation of adenylate cyclase after treatment with L-dopa may be a useful model for studying neurological and psychiatric disorders that are thought to involve the dopaminergic system of the brain.  相似文献

Pig mange was investigated serologically in colostral samples with ELISA using Chekit Sarcoptest. This test has already been using to investigate sera samples from swine in veterinary practice. A total of 684 sow colostral samples were collected from 24 mange free breeding units and 6 units with clinical manifestation of mange infestation. The specificity of the test was more than 99% and the mean seroprevalence 30% (range 6% to 100%). This simple method will allow in the future not only the rapid and certain diagnosis of pig mange but also the screening of pig breeding units after eradication of the disease.  相似文献
