The present report addresses the development of cutaneous and ocular reactions possibly related to meloxicam administration in a dog. Based on clinical signs and absence of laboratory data compatible with the other differential diagnoses considered, the possibility of an adverse drug reaction (ADR) due to meloxicam was considered. Skin biopsy revealed haemorrhage of the superficial and deep dermis, associated with hyperplasia of endothelial cells and epidermal sloughing. Vasculitis in the deep dermis was also noted. Such lesions were considered compatible with an ADR. Although the owner was not aware of any previous allergic reaction to drugs, the animal had a clinical history of atopic dermatitis. Meloxicam is a nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) in the oxicam family, indicated for the control of inflammation and pain in acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders in dogs. Although meloxicam is usually well tolerated, the present clinical case represents an alert to practitioners about the potential role of NSAIDS in ADRs in dogs with a history of allergic cutaneous diseases.  相似文献

Q fever is an important zoonotic disease which has been recently diagnosed, mainly in sheep and goats, in Portugal. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of bovine Coxiella burnetii antibodies in dairy farms from the northwest of Portugal. Bulk tank milk samples were randomly obtained, on November 2013, from 90 dairy farms and assayed using an ELISA kit. The apparent prevalence was 61.1 % (95 % C.I. from 50.8 to 70.5 %). The proportion of negative and intermediate (inconclusive) herds was 34.5 % (25.5 to 44.7 %) and 4.4 % (1.7 to 10.9 %), respectively. In conclusion, a high level of exposure to Coxiella burnetii was observed in Portuguese dairy cattle herds, highlighting the needs to better understand the epidemiology of Q fever in Portugal by the implementation of a monitoring program based on harmonized serologic and molecular methodologies and elucidation of the infection status of the herds.

Objective – To describe a case of leishmaniasis associated with nephrotic syndrome and aortic and caudal vena cava thrombosis in a dog. Case Summary – A 3‐year‐old male Boxer was referred to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Lisbon, with vomiting, polyuria, polydipsia, lethargy, anorexia, and weight loss. On admission, the dog was thin, quiet, and dehydrated. Initial laboratory abnormalities were compatible with a diagnosis of leishmaniasis (confirmed by serology and bone marrow aspirate), and nephrotic syndrome. Three days later, the animal developed lumbar pain, paraparesis, and absent femoral pulses. Coagulation tests showed a marked reduction in antithrombin (AT) and a mild increase in serum fibrinogen concentration. A diagnosis of thromboembolism was made. In spite of treatment aimed at controlling the primary condition and decreasing further thrombus formation, necrosis developed in the distal right pelvic limb and the nail beds of the left pelvic limb. Against medical advice, medication was stopped and, 15 days later, the dog returned to the hospital, showing extensive necrosis of both pelvic limb extremities. Euthanasia was performed at the owner's request. Necropsy showed a thrombus localized at the distal aorta and extending into the right iliac artery, and an additional thrombus extending from both femoral veins onto the caudal vena cava. New or Unique Information Provided – Thromboembolic disease is rare in dogs with leishmaniasis with nephrotic syndrome. This case suggests that a marked decrease in AT and a mild increase in serum fibrinogen may elicit a hypercoagulable state in these patients.  相似文献

Natural, and in particular, artificial (human) selection may pose a danger to the existing crop genetic diversity. Nevertheless, on-farm breeding systems seem to achieve phenotypic improvements even though preserving variability. Using SSR markers, we analysed several selection cycles, over a 20 years period, of a Portuguese on-farm participatory maize OPV-‘Pigarro’ breeding project. No significant differences in allelic richness (Nar), observed heterozygosity (HO), expected heterozygosity (or gene diversity; HE) or inbreeding coefficient (f) were detected among the selection cycles. 58 out of 107 alleles were common to all the selection cycles studied. The analysis of molecular variance showed that the variation among selection cycles represented only 7% of the total molecular variation. However, the number of private alleles varied among the selection cycles, being the highest detected at the beginning of the selection project. These findings demonstrate that an allele flow took place during the on-farm selection process of ‘Pigarro’ but the level of genetic diversity was not significantly influenced. Since interesting phenotypic improvements were also achieved, on-farm breeding projects, like this one, should be valued as a way to preserve unique Portuguese maize landraces in risk of disappearing.  相似文献

The interactions between the digestive protease trypsin type IX-S from porcine pancreas and grape seed procyanidins were monitorized by fluorescence quenching, dynamic light scattering, nephelometry, circular dichroism, and enzymatic inhibition assay. This work reports that the inhibition of trypsin activity by grape seed procyanidins and the respective quenching of intrinsic protein fluorescence are closely related. These two phenomena increase with the molecular weight of the tested procyanidins. The interaction between procyanidins and enzyme was shown to involve a specific interaction as inferred from the fluorescence assays. It was also shown by fluorescence spectroscopy that the binding of procyanidin molecules to the enzyme does not induce significant structural modifications. A relationship between aggregate formation, using dynamic light scattering and nephelometry, and fluorescence quenching was observed with maxima achieved for similar stoichiometric ratios. The binding of procyanidins to trypsin affects only slightly protein structure as seen by circular dichroism.  相似文献

Little is known of Toxoplasma gondii infections in animals in Portugal. In the present paper, we report the first isolation of viable T. gondii from pigs in Portugal. Antibodies to T. gondii were found in 52 (15.6%) of 333 pigs prior to slaughter using the modified agglutination test (MAT) at a serum dilution of 1:20. Attempts were made to isolate T. gondii from 37 seropositive pigs. Samples of brain and/or heart from each pig were digested in acid pepsin, and bioassayed into mice. Viable T. gondii was isolated from 15 pigs. Restriction fragment length polymorphism on products of SAG2 locus amplified by PCR and microsatellite analysis revealed that 11 isolates were Type II and four were Type III. The results indicate that phenotypically and genetically T. gondii are similar to isolates from pigs from the U.S.  相似文献

Two newly formed yellow pigments that revealed unique spectral features were detected and isolated from an aged Port red wine by TSK Toyopearl HW-40(s) gel chromatography and characterized by UV-visible spectrophotometry, 1H NMR and 13C NMR, and mass spectrometry (LC-ESI/MS). The UV-vis spectra of these pigments showed maximum absorption at 478 nm that is significantly hypsochromically shifted from those of original grape anthocyanins and other pyranoanthocyanins, exhibiting a more yellow hue in acidic solution. The structures of these pigments correspond to methyl-linked pyranomalvidin 3-glucoside and its respective coumaroyl glucoside derivative. They were shown to arise from the reaction between acetoacetic acid and genuine grape anthocyanins. Isolation and NMR identification using 1D and 2D NMR techniques are reported for the first time for this new family of anthocyanin-derived yellow pigments occurring in red wines.  相似文献

Bísaro pig (BP), like many other local breeds reared in extensive non-industrial systems, faces many constraints to comply with the EU welfare regulation, particularly regarding the restrictions to surgical castration. In order to adapt an immunocastration protocol to overtake this issue, a puberty timeline is needed. Using gonadal morphometry data from 91 young male BP, this study intended to characterize testicular development, describing the prominent cell types and structures, to ultimately assess the age at puberty in male BP through a mixed prediction model. As expected, the relations between several macro and microscopic parameters and their relation with age were as described within the literature. Post-pubertal animals have larger and heavier gonads, lower Sertoli cell density/tubule, higher Leydig cell density and larger seminiferous tubules. Meiosis was firstly seen in 44-day-old animals, elongated spermatids in 70-day-old animals. Complete spermatogenesis was firstly identified in a 90-day-old animal. Spermatozoa were present in the epididymis of 23 animals, aged from 70 to 240 days old, and in the vas deferens of 14 animals (105 to 240 days old). The prediction model inferred that male Bísaro pigs reach puberty between 14 and 17 weeks (3 and 4 months old) and become sexually capable from 15 to 19 weeks (3.5 and 4.4 months old). These parameters confirm the sexual precocity of this breed.  相似文献

Background

Pregnancy toxaemia (PT) is a disease that affects pregnant goats during their last month of gestation and is characterized by a high case fatality rate. This study involved 32 does maintained on a commercial dairy goat farm that were diagnosed with PT. A physical examination was performed on and haematology parameters obtained from each doe, at the time of diagnosis. The data from the 24 PT goats that died was compared with the corresponding data from the 8 PT goats that survived.

Results

Polypnea, swollen limbs, anorexia with absence of ruminal motility, recumbency, nervous signs and drooping ears were the most frequently observed clinical manifestations. Nineteen out of 21 recumbent goats died. Sixteen out of 17 goats with anorexia and absence of ruminal motility died. Mean beta-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA) values in the goats that died were not significantly different from those in goats that survived. The blood values for pH and pCO2 (p?<?0.005) as well as for HCO3 ?, BE and K+ (p?<?0.001) were significantly lower in the goats that died than in those that survived.

Conclusions

The clinical signs most indicative of a poor prognosis are anorexia with absence of ruminal motility and recumbency. Among the blood parameters to be considered, hypokalaemia and metabolic acidosis are the most relevant. Goats with PT have a high mortality and their condition can deteriorate very fast. Based on the authors’s experience, a good strategy to minimize the economic losses caused by PT is to focus on the offspring survival rate since an early decision (induction of kidding or caesarian surgery) can increase the number of alive kids.
