Thirty-one calves born into five Maasai zebu cattle herds over a period of 1 month in the Trans-Mara Division of Kenya, endemic for theileriosis, were recruited for an intensive study of theileriosis. No calves up to 6 months of age died but all developed Theileria infections as judged by slide examination and serology. Parasitosis by T. mutans schizonts in lymph node smears was usually higher than that of T. parva. The T. mutans schizonts usually occurred at an earlier age but persisted at a patent level for a shorter time than those of T. parva. Serological findings using the indirect fluorescent antibody test confirmed the parasitological findings. It was evident that colostral transfer of Theileria antibodies was frequent. Theileria piroplasm parasitaemia had developed in all calves by 111 days of age. The earlier parasitosis by T. mutans reflected the higher infection rates in Amblyomma spp. than in Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. The mean number of R. appendiculatus on the ears of calves during the observations was 9.1 adults and 1.5 nymphs. Clinical episodes of T. mutans and T. parva infection were associated with febrile responses, enlarged lymph nodes, anaemia and other symptoms and about 80% of calves had poor weight gains or weight losses during either clinical infection. It would appear that theileriosis is one of the most important factors in the stunting of calf development in the area. 相似文献

Two experiments were carried out in which parvaquone was used to treat experimentally-induced acute clinical East Coast fever infections. In the first experiment, infections with Theileria parva parva (Kiambu 5) were induced by applying infected Rhipicephalus appendiculatus ticks or by inoculation of triturated infected-tick stabilate. The character of the disease was similar with both methods of infection and following a single treatment with parvaquone at 20 mg kg-1, 5 of 7 cattle in each group recovered. All untreated control cattle died. In the second experiment, 5 stabilate isolates from different locations within East Africa, and representative of the challenge likely to be met in the field, were used. Treatment was administered in 2 X 10 mg kg-1 doses 48 h apart. The isolates used were T. p. parva (Mbita), T. p. parva (Pugu), T. p. parva (Entebbe), T. p. lawrencei (Mara) and T. p. lawrencei/(Manyara); following treatment 3/7, 6/6, 6/7, 5/7 and 6/7 animals recovered, respectively. All untreated control cattle died. There was evidence of a difference in susceptibility of isolates to treatment, and some animals showed prolonged disease episodes. The nature of the response to treatment and the problems in treating a lympho-destructive disease are discussed. 相似文献

Eggs and sperm were obtained from a female (6.3 kg/BW) and a male (8.4 kg/BW) longtooth grouper Epinephelus bruneus following HCG injection in July 2003. The eggs were fertilized artMcially with the sperm and incubated in one of two 50-m3 tanks after washing the fertilized eggs. The fertilized eggs were 830–950 pn (average 900 ± 2 μm) in diameter and the respective fertilization and hatching rates were 97.7 ± 0.6% and 96.8 ± 0.5% at a water temperature of 25.0 ± 0.5 C. With this regime, the survival rate by day 93 was 7.5% in the 50-m3 tank. The elapsed time from hatching to opening the mouth was 3 d at 25 C. The initial mouth size (z) of the larvae was 0.22–0.23 mm. The newly hatched larvae were 2.02 ± 0.02 mm TL; this increased to 4.12 ± 0.09 mm TL by day 11. By day 54, the larvae had metamorphosed into juveniles and reached 41.12 ± 1.20 mm TL, and by day 93 the juveniles reached 93.78 ± 1.98 mm TL. The role of superparamagnetic iron oxide as a tissue-specific contrast medium has been established in humans, especially for hepatic imaging. Superparamagnetic iron oxide particles exhibit a tissue-specific biodistribution to the reticuloendothelial system, where they predominantly shorten transverse T2 relaxation time. Most hepatic tumors lack Kupffer cells; therefore, the T2 of tumors remains virtually unchanged after administration of superparamagnetic iron oxide. The resulting loss of signal intensity from the liver, with unchanged tumor signal intensity, increases lesion-to-liver contrast. In this study, MR images were acquired with fast gradient echo recalled at steady state (FGRE) in five Beagle dogs before and after injection of superparamagnetic iron oxide. The effect of superparamagnetic iron oxide on signal intensity of the liver with time was assessed. A signal intensity decrease of 65.7+/-10.0% was detected at 20 minutes, and it continued to decrease until the last time point of MR scanning (200 minutes). The liver intensity of all dogs dropped to half its value after 20 minutes. The effect of motion was minimized by breath holding. Superparamagnetic iron oxide did not have any adverse effects on the dogs. 相似文献

The distribution of ventilation-perfusion (VA/Q) ratios, before and after 100 per cent oxygen, was studied in an induced-premature foal at 4 h and again at eleven days of age, using the multiple inert gas elimination technique. The major finding was an absence of low VA/Q ratios when breathing air, indicating that low PaO2 in the neonatal period was totally attributable to the right-to-left shunt. At 4 h of age the PaO2 was 5.48 kPa and the right-to-left shunt represented 33.4 per cent of the cardiac output. At eleven days of age the PaO2 was 9.76 kPa and right-to-left shunt was 10.1 per cent of cardiac output. At both ages there was a separate high mode where ventilation was greatly in excess of blood flow but at neither age were units with low VA/Q ratios present. Oxygen breathing for 40 mins did not increase the right-to-left shunt, but at eleven days right-to-left shunt decreased when 100 per cent oxygen was administered. 相似文献

O6 and the gacS complemented mutant-elicited reduced viral symptoms and viral titre. On GX3, there was little affect on symptoms when roots
were colonized by the wild-type, gacS mutant or complemented mutant but colonization by both the wild-type and the gacS mutant lowered viral titre. Wild-type O6 and the gacS mutant caused plant growth to be maintained in both tobacco cultivars after viral infection, although the affect was stronger
with GX3 than Samsun. In contrast, although a chemical inducer, benzothiadiazole, reduced symptoms and viral titre in both
cultivars, plant growth was suppressed. Our results indicate rhizobacteria-elicited induced viral resistance without a negative
impact on growth but there was a differential response between cultivars. Detailed knowledge regarding the mechanisms inherent
