The ability of grazing sheep to exploit preferred patches of grass species according to their spatial distribution was studied. The choices made by groups of four ewes in three cocksfoot ( Dactylis glomerata ) plots (80 × 80 m), in which 136 patches (30 × 30 cm) of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) were either randomly distributed (plot Rand ) or grouped (plots Ag.1 and Ag.2 ) to create preferred feeding sites (four rich sites of twenty-five patches and four poorer sites of nine patches) were compared. On measurement days, each group was allocated to one of the three plots, and grazed it in at least four successive 30-min tests. At the end of the experiment the ewes were allowed to graze the plots continuously for 3 months to assess the medium-term effect of grazing sheep on the depletion rate of patches. Behavioural observations showed that, once the ewes had discovered a preferred feeding site in plots Ag.1 or Ag.2 , they frequently returned to it within a test and between tests, whereas they failed to learn the precise location of many isolated patches in plot Rand . Thus in 2 h of grazing, the ewes spent 0·40 more time feeding on perennial ryegrass when the patches were grouped than when they were randomly distributed, and perennial ryegrass depletion was greater in plots Ag.1 and Ag.2 than in plot Rand (0·193 vs. 0·105 of initial height). The richer sites were also more depleted than the poorer ones (0·209 vs. 0·152 of initial height). When the plots were continuously grazed, perennial ryegrass depletion remained greater in plots Ag.1 and Ag.2 than in plot Rand for at least 3 weeks. The study of binary Kuiper Belt objects helps to probe the dynamic conditions present during planet formation in the solar system. We report on the mutual-orbit determination of 2001 QW322, a Kuiper Belt binary with a very large separation whose properties challenge binary-formation and -evolution theories. Six years of tracking indicate that the binary's mutual-orbit period is approximately 25 to 30 years, that the orbit pole is retrograde and inclined 50 degrees to 62 degrees from the ecliptic plane, and, most surprisingly, that the mutual orbital eccentricity is <0.4. The semimajor axis of 105,000 to 135,000 kilometers is 10 times that of other near-equal-mass binaries. Because this weakly bound binary is prone to orbital disruption by interlopers, its lifetime in its present state is probably less than 1 billion years. 相似文献

Limb‐sparing for distal radial osteosarcoma has a high rate of complications. Using personalized three‐dimensional (3D)‐printed implants might improve outcome. The goals of this study were to optimize use of patient‐specific, 3D‐printed endoprostheses for limb‐sparing in dogs in the clinical environment and to report the outcome. This was a pilot study where five client‐owned dogs were enrolled. Computed tomography (CT) of the thoracic limbs was performed, which was used to create patient‐specific endoprostheses and cutting guides, and repeated on the day of surgery. Intra‐arterial (IA) carboplatin was introduced in the clinical management. Limb‐sparing was performed. Outcome measures were time required to produce the endoprosthesis and cutting guide, fit between cutting guide and endoprosthesis with host bones, gait analysis, size of the tumour, percent tumour necrosis, complications, disease‐free interval (DFI) and survival time (ST). Four dogs received IA carboplatin. Excessive tumour growth between planning CT and surgery did not occur in any dog. The interval between the CT and surgery ranged from 14 to 70 days. Fit between the cutting‐guide and endoprosthesis with the host bones was good to excellent. At least one complication occurred in all dogs. Two dogs were euthanized with STs of 192 and 531 days. The other dogs were alive with a follow up of 534 to 575 days. IA chemotherapy is a promising strategy to minimize the risk of excessive tumour growth while waiting for the endoprosthesis and cutting‐guide to be made. In the Sahel, with average annual precipitation in the order of 500 mm yr− 1, wind erosion occurs mainly on cultivated millet fields whose surfaces are only partially covered by crop residues. The impact of these residues on wind erosion was not clearly established. Eight male Holstein calves 7 to 10 d of age were fed a milk replacer containing a skim milk powder subjected to low-temperature drying either with or without addition of an oxalate-NaOH buffer known to prevent curd formation. The calves were used in a completely randomized design to study the effect of milk clotting on digestibility and blood parameters. Plasma glucose and plasma insulin were similar (P greater than .05) for the clotting and the nonclotting milk replacers. For both treatments, concentrations of glucose and insulin reached a peak 2 h postfeeding (P less than .01). Plasma triglycerides were higher (P less than .01) postfeeding for the nonclotting than for the clotting milk replacer. Plasma essential amino acids and plasma urea were higher, whereas plasma calcium was lower, for the nonclotting milk (P less than .01). Digestibility of dry matter, protein and fat was similar (P greater than .05) between clotting and nonclotting milk. The dry matter content of feces was not affected by clotting (P greater than .05). The data are interpreted to indicate that clotting of the milk replacer modifies blood concentrations of triglycerides, essential amino acids and urea without changing the digestibility of the diet. 相似文献

Bed-load transport experiments have been conducted in a steep gravel-bed open ditch. This initially straight ditch has been neglected for many years and looks at present like a second-order natural stream channel. The channel flows through a spruce forest and several log-jams have produced chutes and pools, creating supplementary roughness. The total shear stress has been evaluated using the slope-hydraulic radius product, and the ratio between grain and bed-form shear stresses has been calculated using different methods. The shear stress has also been evaluated from the shear velocities, and this gives a good evaluation of the grain shear stress. Additional experiments have been conducted with marked pebbles to estimate particle mobility and to improve the motion equations. Equations such as θc = a(Di/D50)b)b, defined by Andrews, apply in these cases but the values of a and b are lower than those produced by this author. In a second stage of experimentation, we have destroyed the log jams resulting in a diminution of the roughness and critical shear stress (when the total shear stress is used), an increase of the grain shear stress, and thus greater bed particle mobility for the same discharge. It emerges from these experiments that the log-jams contribute to the reduction of bed-load evacuation and explain the very weak bed-load discharge measured by a bed-load trap (0.3 t · km−2 yr−1). 相似文献
