Quinoa was cultivated for 7000 years by indigenous people of the Andes, but in recent decades it is gaining international attention because of its tolerance to abiotic stresses, the wide genetic variability, and its high nutritional value. Greece was among the European countries and in the Mediterranean basin, the first European country, which since 1995 was involved in the “American and European Test of Quinoa” organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization and the Quinoa Project “CIP-DANIDA.” The experiments (1995–2004) were conducted in the lowlands of Central Greece (Larissa region). The first experiments focused on the adaptation of quinoa varieties to warm and dry climatic conditions and to the effect of plant density on seed yield (SY). Drought, low relative humidity, high temperatures (>32 °C), and long days (during anthesis) were considered unfavorable for seed production. Moreover, crusting and drying up of the soil surface had a negative effect on the proportion (60–70%) of emerged seedlings. The best sowing density is considered to be 25 plants m?2. Considering the effect of sowing date on SY and quality, it was found that early sowing in March is more suitable (in areas where frost avoidance is ensured), whereas latest (May) sowing was unsuitable and resulted in poor germination. The evaluation of 25 quinoa varieties showed that only 8 (six European and two Latin American) varieties produced seeds, whereas the rest 17 produced only panicles and flowers. Dry matter quality of the produced stems was analyzed for protein and fiber content. Dry stems of the plants remained after seed harvest contained high percentage of fibers (45%). The eight most promising varieties were also evaluated for their yielding potential and their seed composition under contrasting soil properties. Compared to neutral soil conditions, SY in the saline–sodic soil was decreased up to 45%. Mineral and protein content in seeds was higher in the varieties originated from Latin America. SY for some varieties exceeded 1000–1500 kg ha?1, and seeds were rich in protein (15–18.5%) and minerals content. On a breeding program started in 2002, 23 families have been created using mass selection procedures for the creation of new varieties from plants survived in the saline–sodic soils. These selections had to be evaluated in dense sowing in typical SY experiments, but experimentation was discontinued in the absence of financial support. Farmers’ knowledge gaps on cultivation techniques, the distances from the European markets, and the absence of incentives are probably considered the major obstacles to date for crop’s expansion in Greece. Research should focus on the evaluation of promising genetic material in different agroecological zones including higher altitudes.

BACKGROUND: Biobeds have been well studied in northern Europe, whereas little is known regarding their use in southern Europe. The degradation and adsorption of terbuthylazine (TA) and chlorpyrifos (CP) were studied in three different biomixtures composed of composted cotton crop residues, soil and straw in various proportions, and also in sterilised and non‐sterilised soil. RESULTS: Compost biomixtures degraded the less hydrophobic TA at a faster rate than soil, while the opposite was evident for the more hydrophobic CP. These results were attributed to the rapid abiotic hydrolysis of CP in the alkaline soil (pH 8.5) compared with the lower pH of the compost (6.6), but also to the increasing adsorption (Kd = 746 mL g?1) and reduced bioavailability of CP in the biomixtures compared with soil (Kd = 17 mL g?1), as verified by the adsorption studies. CONCLUSIONS: Compost had a dual but contrasting effect on degradation that depended on the chemical nature of the pesticide studied: a positive effect towards TA owing to increasing biodegradation and a negative effect towards CP owing to increasing adsorption. Overall, composted cotton crop residues could be potentially used in local biobed systems in Greece, as they promoted the degradation of hydrophilic pesticides and the adsorption of hydrophobic pesticides. "Minimal (subclinical) hepatic encephalopathy" is a term that describes impairment of every day life activities in cirrhosis patients without clinical neurologic abnormalities. Melatonin diurnal pattern disruption and metabolic changes due to liver insufficiency can affect the human biologic clock. Our study was conducted to measure plasma melatonin levels in an attempt to correlate plasma melatonin abnormalities with liver insufficiency severity, and describe chronotypology in cirrhosis patients with minimal encephalopathy.  相似文献

A comparative test was undertaken in order to identify the potential of existing mathematical models, including the rice water quality (RICEWQ) 1.6.4v model, the pesticide concentration in paddy field (PCPF-1) model and the surface water and groundwater (SWAGW) model, for calculating pesticide dissipation and exposure in rice paddies in Europe. Previous versions of RICEWQ and PCPF-1 models had been validated under European and Japanese conditions respectively, unlike the SWAGW model which was only recently developed as a tier-2 modelling tool. Two datasets, derived from field dissipation studies undertaken in northern Italy with the herbicides cinosulfuron and pretilachlor, were used for the modelling exercise. All models were parameterized according to field experimentations, as far as possible, considering their individual deficiencies. Models were not calibrated against field data in order to remove bias in the comparison of the results. RICEWQ 1.6.4v provided the highest agreement between measured and predicted pesticide concentrations in both paddy water and paddy soil, with modelling efficiency (EF) values ranging from 0.78 to 0.93. PCPF-1 simulated well the dissipation of herbicides in paddy water, but significantly underestimated the concentrations of pretilachlor, a chemical with high affinity for soil sorption, in paddy soil. SWAGW simulated relatively well the dissipation of both herbicides in paddy water, and especially pretilachlor, but failed to predict closely the pesticide dissipation in paddy soil. Both RICEWQ and SWAGW provided low groundwater (GW) predicted environmental concentrations (PECs), suggesting a low risk of GW contamination for the two herbicides. Overall, this modelling exercise suggested that RICEWQ 1.6.4v is currently the most reliable model for higher-tier exposure assessment in rice paddies in Europe. PCPF-1 and SWAGW showed promising results, but further adjustments are required before these models can be considered as strong candidates for inclusion in the higher-tier pesticide regulatory scheme.  相似文献

Viral encephalopathy and retinopathy (VER) is a serious neuropathological fish disease affecting in the Mediterranean aquaculture mainly European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax. It is well known that betanodaviruses are neurotropic viruses that replicate in nerve tissues, preferentially brain and retina. However, routes of entry and progression of the virus in the central nervous system (CNS) remain unclear. The role of four tissues—eye, oesophagus, gills and skin—as possible gateways of a betanodavirus, the redspotted grouper nervous necrosis virus (RGNNV), was investigated after experimental challenges performed on European seabass juveniles. The dispersal pattern of Betanodavirus at primarily stages of the disease was also assessed, using a real-time qPCR assay. The development of typical clinical signs of VER, the presence of characteristic histopathological lesions in the brain and retina and the detection of viral RNA in the tissues of all experimental groups ascertained that successful invasion of RGNNV under all experimental routes was achieved. Transneuronal spread along pathways known to be connected to the initial site of entry seems to be the predominant scenario of viral progression in the CNS. Furthermore, viraemia appeared only after the installation of the infection in the brain.  相似文献

Shellfish farming often takes place in areas subjected to various recurring pollutions. The intensive use of herbicides in agriculture leads to the presence of residues in the aquatic ecosystems. In the present study, the effects of atrazine on the viability of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the formation of their byssus were studied. A total of 720 mussels (mean length 24 mm ± 2.1 SD) were divided into six groups. The mussels from the first five groups were exposed to five concentrations of atrazine, 10, 8, 5, 2 and 1 ppm, while one group was used as control. The LC50 was calculated after 48 h, while the long-term effect of atrazine on the viability and byssus formation of the mussels were studied for 21 days. The LC50 was found to be 6.33 ppm. From all the concentrations of atrazine to which the mussels were exposed, only in two of them (2 and 1 ppm) some mussels survived up to the last day of the experiment. The survival rate in the control group was significantly higher than those of mussels that were exposed to atrazine. Regarding the byssus formation, the number of byssal threads was significant lower in the mussels that were exposed to 2 and 1 ppm atrazine compared to the control group, while no byssal threads were formed by the mussels exposed to 10, 8 and 5 ppm. All the mussels that survived on day 21 were then exposed to air. The LT50 for the control group and the mussels which had been exposed to 1 and 2 ppm atrazine were 5.14, 2.77 and 1.98 days, respectively. The results of the present study indicate that atrazine has a significant effect on the viability of mussels both in the water and in air and on their ability to form byssus.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of vitamin A levels in the larval diet of Dicentrarchus labrax, (a) on the shape of juvenile skeleton and (b) on the development of pelvic fins. To exclude the side‐effects of skeletal abnormalities on skeleton shape, morphometric analysis was performed on normal individuals only. Geometric morphometric analysis revealed a significant effect of larval nutrition on the shape of juvenile skeleton (Wilk's λ=0.0188, P<0.001), 55 days after the application of the different nutritional regimes. Between‐groups shape differences mainly concerned the position of anterior dorsal pterygiophore, which was associated with a significant (P<0.05) increase of the number of dorsal lepidotrichia and hard spines at low levels of vitamin A (3–9 × 103 IU kg?1 dry food). At the lowest vitamin A levels (3 × 103 IU kg?1 dry food), the development of pelvic fins was abnormal, with severe bilateral (44±10%, mean±SD) or unilateral (22±9%) lack of the fin lepidotrichia, hard spines and their supporting elements. In the 82–94% of the unilaterally deformed individuals, deformation concerned the left pelvic fin. Concerning the shape of pelvic fins in the normally developed individuals, results demonstrated a significant effect of nutritional conditions on the size and position of all the elements of the pelvic fin area (basipterygium, lower metacleithrum, cleithrum, scapula) (Wilk's λ=0.3087, P<0.001). Our results demonstrate a significant nutritionally driven phenotypic plasticity in D. labrax, with dietary levels of vitamin A determining the skeleton shape and the left–right symmetry of pelvic fins.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to provide a better insight into the adaptive processes to water deficit of Rosa hybrid plants grown in soilless cultivation. Rose plants were grown in a greenhouse under two water regimes, corresponding to 100% and 67% of the irrigation needs. Watering was stopped for 0, 72, and 96 h (dry-down period) and photosynthetic parameters, water relations, chlorophyll fluorescence, carbohydrate and ion content were determined.  相似文献

This paper describes a computational system developed for the compilation of an anthropogenic emission inventory of gaseous pollutants for Greece. The inventory was developed using a geographical information system integrated with SQL programming language to provide high temporal gridded emission fields for CO, NO2, NO, SO2, NH3 and 23 non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) species for the reference year 2003. Activity and statistical data from national sources were used for the quantification of emissions from the road transport, the other mobile sources and machinery sectors and from range activities using top-down or bottom-up methodologies. Annual emission data from existing national and European emission databases were also used. The emission data were spatially and temporally disaggregated using source-specific spatiotemporal indicators. On national scale, the road transport sector produces about 60% of the annual CO and NMVOC total emissions, with gasoline vehicles being the main CO and NMVOC emissions source. The road transport is responsible for approximately half of the higher alkanes and for more than half of the ethene and toluene emissions. The maritime sector accounts for about 40% of the annual total NOx emissions, most of which are emitted by the international shipping subsector, whilst SO2 is emitted mainly by the energy sector. The evaluation of the emissions inventory suggests that it provides a good representation of the amounts of gaseous pollutants emitted on national scale and a good characterisation of the relative composition of CO and NOx emission in the large urban centres.  相似文献

In this paper, the effect of nitrogen addition on the aerobic bioremediation of a diesel-contaminated soil was studied. Soil was artificially contaminated with diesel at an initial 2% concentration (on a dry soil basis). Nitrogen was added as NH4Cl in a single load at the start of the experiment at concentration levels of 0, 100, 250, 500, 1,000, and 2,000 mg N/dry kg soil, and uncontaminated and unamended soil O2 consumptions were studied. Diesel degradation was indirectly studied via measurements of O2 consumption and CO2 production, using manometric respirometers. Results showed that the 250 mg N/dry kg concentration resulted in the highest O2 consumption among all runs, whereas O2 consumption was reduced by N additions greater than 500 mg N/dry kg. Zero to 0.6 order degradation kinetics appeared to prevail, as was calculated via the oxygen consumption rates. A theoretical biochemical reaction for diesel degradation was developed, based on measurement of the final diesel concentration in one of the runs. According to the stoichiometry, the optimal N requirements to allow complete diesel degradation should be approximately 0.15 g N/g diesel degraded or 1,400 mg N/dry kg of soil, based on the initial diesel concentration used in this study.
