This study identified, quantified, and compared the phytochemical contents and antioxidant capacities of Aloe ferox lyophilized leaf gel (LGE) and 95% ethanol leaf gel extracts (ELGE) using GC-MS and spectrophotometric methods. Analytically, 95% ethanol is less effective than ethyl acetate/diethyl ether or hexane (in the case of fatty acids) extractions in separating phytochemicals for characterization purposes. However, although fewer compounds are extracted in the ELGE, they are approximately 345 times more concentrated as compared to the LGE, hence justifying ELGE use in biological efficacy studies in vivo. Individual phytochemicals identified included various phenolic acids/polyphenols, phytosterols, fatty acids, indoles, alkanes, pyrimidines, alkaloids, organic acids, aldehydes, dicarboxylic acids, ketones, and alcohols. Due to the presence of the antioxidant polyphenols, indoles, and alkaloids, the A. ferox leaf gel shows antioxidant capacity as confirmed by ORAC and FRAP analyses. Both analytical methods used show the non-flavonoid polyphenols to contribute to the majority of the total polyphenol content. Due to its phytochemical composition, A. ferox leaf gel may show promise in alleviating symptoms associated with/or prevention of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, neurodegeneration, and diabetes.  相似文献

Complex worker caste systems have contributed to the evolutionary success of advanced ant societies; however, little is known about the developmental processes underlying their origin and evolution. We combined hormonal manipulation, gene expression, and phylogenetic analyses with field observations to understand how novel worker subcastes evolve. We uncovered an ancestral developmental potential to produce a "supersoldier" subcaste that has been actualized at least two times independently in the hyperdiverse ant genus Pheidole. This potential has been retained and can be environmentally induced throughout the genus. Therefore, the retention and induction of this potential have facilitated the parallel evolution of supersoldiers through a process known as genetic accommodation. The recurrent induction of ancestral developmental potential may facilitate the adaptive and parallel evolution of phenotypes.  相似文献

Wound protection during all stages of grapevine propagation is of utmost importance to prevent infection of propagation material by decline and dieback pathogens. In semi-commercial nursery trials, grapevine rootstock and scion cuttings were soaked in water (control), chemical or biological sanitation products prior to cold storage, prior to grafting (machine- or hand-grafting) and prior to planting in field nurseries. Natural infection levels in basal ends and graft unions of uprooted nursery grapevines were evaluated 8 months after planting. Total pathogen incidences in the water-treated control plants ranged from 30% in basal ends to 13.5% in graft unions. Phaeomoniella chlamydospora was the most commonly isolated pathogen, followed by Phaeoacremonium, Cylindrocarpon + Campylocarpon, Botryosphaeria and Phomopsis spp. Machine-grafted unions generally had lower pathogen incidences compared with hand-grafted graft unions. In general, repeated soak-treatments of propagation material in the tested products resulted in reduced pathogen incidences in nursery grapevines. However, products containing T. harzianum (Trichoflow-T), hydrogen peroxide (Bio-sterilizer) and 8-hydroxyquinoline sulphate (Chinosol) gave inconsistent results, whereas Bronocide (a blend of halogenated alcohols and water) proved to be a good sterilising agent, but reduced certifiable plant yield significantly. Benomyl (at 100 g/100 l), Sporekill (a patented didecyldimethylammonium chloride formulation at 150 ml/100 l) and captan (at 1000 ml/100 l) were consistently the best treatments as growth parameters were not negatively influenced and pathogen incidences in basal ends and graft unions of uprooted plants were reduced.  相似文献

Peptides and free amino acids resulting from protein hydrolysis could act as stimulants of fish non‐specific immunity. The study aimed to determine the potential of rainbow trout viscera silage as immune stimulant and feed ingredient for Mozambique tilapia, and to establish whether formic acid used during silage preparation contributed to any effects. Four diets were evaluated: a reference diet (R), one containing 6.5 g kg?1 formic acid (FA) and two silage diets containing 160 g kg?1 (SL, low inclusion) and 285 g kg?1 (SH, high inclusion) silage. Low silage inclusion improved phagocytic activity of leucocytes compared with the reference, while high inclusion showed no improvement. No other non‐specific immunity parameters or haematology were affected by any treatments. High silage inclusion significantly decreased growth and led to higher mortality, while formic acid had no effect on growth. It is concluded that rainbow trout viscera silage can stimulate the cellular non‐specific immunity of Oreochromis mossambicus, and that protein hydrolysis products (and not formic acid) is responsible for the stimulation. The silage can also serve as source of dietary protein and essential amino acids in tilapia diets. However, both fish growth performance and improvement in cellular immunity are dependent on silage inclusion level.  相似文献

Trunk disease pathogens of grapevines, viz. Phaeomoniella chlamydospora, Eutypa lata and several species in Botryosphaeriaceae, Phaeoacremonium and Phomopsis are known to infect fresh pruning wounds by means of air-borne inoculum released after rainfall or prolonged periods of high relative humidity. Recent surveys have demonstrated that most or all of these pathogens are present in climatically diverse grape growing regions of South Africa. However, the factors controlling spore dispersal of these pathogens in vineyards were largely unknown. To address this question, spore trapping was done in a Chenin Blanc vineyard in the Stellenbosch area, South Africa, for 14 weeks during the grapevine pruning period from June to mid-September of 2004 and 2005. Hourly recordings of weather data were done by a weather station in the row adjacent to the spore trap. Spores of E. lata and Phomopsis and species in Botryosphaeriaceae were trapped throughout the trapping periods of 2004 and 2005, with higher levels of trapped spores recorded in 2005. The spores of all three pathogens were trapped during or after periods of rainfall and/or high relative humidity. In neither of the 2 years were spores of Pa. chlamydospora or Phaeoacremonium spp. trapped. Results indicated that spore event incidence, as well as the amount of spores released during a spore event of above-mentioned pathogens, were governed by rainfall, relative humidity, temperature and wind speed prior to and during the spore events.  相似文献

In South Africa, Eucalyptus urophylla is an important species due to its disease tolerance to fungal diseases such as Crysoporthe austroafricana and the Coniothyrium sp. cankers. It is mainly planted as a parental species in a hybrid combination with E. grandis. Generally, the E. grandis × E. urophylla hybrid has better disease tolerance and higher wood density than pure E. grandis. The current strategy is to maintain large breeding populations of both parental species in order to provide improved elite selections for hybrid crosses on a regular basis. With this in mind, two E. urophylla populations, consisting of five provenance/progeny trials, were established in the subtropical region of Zululand. The aims of this study were, firstly, to determine the magnitude of genotype × environment interaction of E. urophylla in Zululand; secondly, to estimate genetic parameters and correlations for diameter at breast height (DBH), height and volume; and thirdly, to identify selections to advance the current breeding population as well as to hybridise with E. grandis. Results indicated that genotype × environment interaction effects would be practically negligible for growth in Zululand and therefore a single breeding population will be appropriate. In general, all growth traits were under low to moderate genetic control, with narrow-sense heritabilities ranging between 0.14 and 0.48 for volume. The genetic correlations between growth traits were high (0.98 and 0.99 for DBH– volume). This is an indication that DBH is a sufficient growth measure to use in E. urophylla breeding programmes. Best linear unbiased prediction estimates indicated that aa selection scenario of 200 individuals will generate genetic gains of 44.7% over the population mean. The estimated gains for the top 50 individuals that could potentially be used as hybrid parents to cross with E. grandis was 59.8% over the population mean.  相似文献

Background: Pregnancy is associated with important changes in gut microbiota composition. Dietary factors may affect the diversity, composition, and metabolic activity of the intestinal microbiota. Among amino acids, proline is known to play important roles in protein metabolism and structure, cell differentiation, conceptus growth and development, and gut microbiota re-equilibration in case of dysbiosis. Results: Dietary supplementation with 1% proline decreased(P 0.05) the amounts of Klebsiella pneumoniae,Peptostreptococcus productus, Pseudomonas, and Veillonella spp. in distal colonic contents than that in the control group. The colonic contents of Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens, Bifidobacterium sp., Clostridium coccoides, Clostridium coccoides-Eubacterium rectale, Clostridium leptum subgroup, Escherichia coli, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii,Fusobacterium prausnitzii, and Prevotella increased(P 0.05) on d 70 of pregnancy as compared with those on d 45 of pregnancy. The colonic concentrations of acetate, total straight-chain fatty acid, and total short-chain fatty acids(SCFA) in the proline-supplemented group were lower(P 0.05), and butyrate level(P = 0.06) decreased as compared with the control group. Almost all of the SCFA displayed higher(P 0.05) concentrations in proximal colonic contents on d 70 of pregnancy than those on d 45 of pregnancy. The concentrations of 1,7-heptyl diamine(P = 0.09) and phenylethylamine(P 0.05) in proximal colonic contents were higher, while those of spermidine(P = 0.05) and total bioamine(P = 0.06) tended to be lower in the proline-supplemented group than those in the control group. The concentrations of spermidine, spermine, and total bioamine in colonic contents were higher(P 0.05) on d 70 of pregnancy than those measured on d 45 of pregnancy. In contrast, the concentration of phenylethylamine was lower(P 0.05) on d 70 than on d 45 of pregnancy.(Continued on next page)(Continued from previous page)Conclusion: These findings indicate that L-proline supplementation modifies both the colonic microbiota composition and the luminal concentrations of several bacterial metabolites. Furthermore, our data show that both the microbiota composition and the concentrations of bacterial metabolites are evolving in the course of pregnancy. These results are discussed in terms of possible implication in terms of luminal environment and consequences for gut physiology and health.  相似文献

Summary Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), although known to be one of the most salt tolerant crops, shows a significant reduction in plant size and yield when grown on highly saline soils. A field plot study was therefore conducted to determine the feasibility of increasing yield on highly saline soils by increasing population density by decreasing the distance between rows. Three row widths and four salinity levels were imposed on a nonsaline Pachappa fine sandy loam (mixed, thermic, Mollic Haploxerall). Canopy closure, plant height, earliness, and several yield components were measured. A significant yield increase was obtained at all salinity levels by decreasing the distance between rows from 102 to 86 or 71 cm.  相似文献
