The aims of this study were to analyze the influence of systematic environmental effects on the prevalence of primary non-congenital cataract (CAT), fibreglass cataract in the nucleus (FCN), and prominent suture lines (PSL) and to estimate the heritabilities of these eye diseases in the wild-boar-colored wirehaired Dachshunds (WWD) bred in the German Dachshund Club 1888 e.V. (DTK). Data included 2,430 WWD born between 1995 and 2003 that were examined between 1996 and 2005 by veterinary ophthalmologists. CAT was diagnosed in 3.83% of the 2,430 dogs, FCN in 3.74%, and PSL in 2.76%. Sex, size, inbreeding coefficient, the age of the dog at examination, experience of the veterinary ophthalmologist and the additive genetic effect of the animal were considered in the multivariate linear model. The age of the dog at examination had a significant influence on the prevalence of FCN. The degree of experience of the veterinary ophthalmologist significantly influenced the prevalence of FCN and PSL. Using a transformation into the Dempster-Lerner threshold model, heritability estimates (h(DL)2) for WWD were h(DL)2 = 0.39 +/- 0.13 for CAT, h(DL)2 = 0.36 +/- 0.11 for FCN and h(DL)2 = 0.49 +/- 0.12 for PSL. Positive genetic correlations (r(g)) were found between CAT and FCN (r(g) = 0.58 +/- 0.21), between PSL and FCN (r(g) = 0.83 +/- 0.23), and between CAT and PSL (r(g) = 0.79 +/- 0.06). The eye diseases investigated here in the Dachshund were found to be genetically influenced and positively correlated traits.  相似文献

Sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome (SARDS) is a disease characterised by sudden and bilateral vision loss of dogs. Previous studies failed to identify the underlying cause [Mattson, A., Roberts, S.M., Isherwood, J.M.E., 1992. Clinical features suggesting hyperadrenocorticism associated with sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome in a dog. J. Am. Anim. Hosp. Assoc. 28, 199-202; Van der Woerdt, A., Nasisse, M.P., Davidson, M.G., 1991. Sudden acquired retinal degeneration in the dog: clinical and laboratory findings in 36 cases. Prog. Vet. Comp. Ophthamol. 1, 11-18] and earlier investigations about the occurrence of anti-retinal antibodies in SARDS patients showed inconsistent results. To provide a novel approach to those findings we designed a more detailed study. Autoantibodies of SARDS patients and normal controls were tested against the purified autoantigens S-antigen and cellular retinaldehyde binding protein (CRALBP) that play a role in human autoimmune uveitis. Next we tested the autoantibody binding pattern to whole retinal lysate. No difference in the incidence of autoantibodies could be found between SARDS patients and healthy controls while testing the well-known autoantigens S-antigen and CRALBP. Potential novel, yet unknown autoantigens were identified by a screening test using the retinal proteome as an autoantigenic source. In SARDS patients and normal controls, several retinal proteins were bound by IgG antibodies, but one band was strongly marked by SARDS patients. That band was excised, subjected to mass spectrometry (matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation-time of flight (MALDI-TOF/TOF)) and identified as neuron-specific enolase. Binding of the IgG autoantibodies of SARDS-affected dogs to this protein was verified using purified NSE, revealing 25% of NSE autoantibody-positive SARDS patients and 0% of negative controls. Our findings indicate that at least some dogs with SARDS have autoantibodies against NSE, although it is unclear whether these play a causative role in SARDS or whether they are the result of retinal destruction by another mechanism.  相似文献

Fast and accurate identification of Brucella suis at the biovar level is an important issue for public health laboratories because some of the biovars that infect suidae (boars and pigs) are pathogenic for humans while others are not. Since classical biovar typing methods are often time-consuming, hard to standardize and require high-level biosafety containment, methodological improvements are desirable. This article describes new single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) signatures for the rapid identification and biovar characterization of B. suis. These SNPs were included together with previously described ones in real-time PCR assays applicable to low-biosafety conditions. Allelic profiles unique for each B. suis biovar were defined and the most relevant signatures were determined on a collection of 137 field strains of worldwide origin characterized previously. Biovars assigned with both present and classical methods were globally consistent except for some biovar 3 field strains which matched the allelic profile of biovar 1.  相似文献

The systemic fungicides thiophanate-methyl (TPM) and thiophanate (TPE) were transformed in aqueous solutions on glass by irradiation with u.v. and sunlight to the more effective fungitoxic substances methyl benzimidazol-2-yl carbamate (MBC) and ethyl benzimidazol-2-yl carbamate (EBC), respectively. The thiophanate fungicides were not converted when incubated in the dark. The photochemical transformation of TPM and TPE to the corresponding alkyl benzimidazol-2-yl carbamates increased with the exposure time of u.v. irradiation. However, no light catalysed reactions occurred when both fungicides were irradiated with u.v. light in the solid state. The residue of TPM and TPE on leaves of cotton plants following spray application were transformed by the energy of sunlight to the more fungitoxic MBC and EBC.  相似文献

Context

Current production from natural forests will not satisfy future world demand for timber and fuel wood, and new land management options are required.

Aims

We explore an innovative production system that combines the production of short rotation coppice in wide alleys with the production of high-value trees on narrow strips of land; it is an alternative form of alley cropping which we propose to call ‘alley coppice’. The aim is to describe this alley coppice system and to illustrate its potential for producing two diverse products, namely high-value timber and energy wood on the same land unit.

Methods

Based on a comprehensive literature review, we compare the advantages and disadvantages of the alley coppice system and contrast the features with well-known existing or past systems of biomass and wood production.

Results

We describe and discuss the basic aspects of alley coppice, its design and dynamics, the processes of competition and facilitation, issues of ecology, and areas that are open for future research.

Conclusion

Based on existing knowledge, a solid foundation for the implementation of alley coppice on suitable land is presented, and the high potential of this system could be shown.  相似文献
