Six outbreaks of equine influenza virus A2 (EIVA2) were diagnosed serologically at five different racetracks during 1983–84. EIVA2 was isolated from horses at four outbreaks. Of the horses sampled, only horses which had not been vaccinated within six months became clinically ill. Clinically normal stablemates sampled during theseoutbreaks showed no serological evidence of subclinical infection. Thereappeared to be a correlation between hemagglutination inhibition (HI) titerand susceptibility to disease. Horses vaccinated biweekly appeared to have a statistically significantly higher EIVA2 HI titer than those vaccinated tri-annually. Background
Kinome profiling aims at the parallel analysis of kinase activities in a cell. Novel developed arrays containing consensus substrates for kinases are used to assess those kinase activities. The arrays described in this paper were already used to determine kinase activities in mammalian systems, but since substrates from many organisms are present we decided to test these arrays for the determination of kinase activities in the model plant species Arabidopsis thaliana. 相似文献645.

Interleukin-8 (IL-8) is a member of a family of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Although the best characterized activities of IL-8 include the chemoattraction and activation of neutrophils, other members of this family have a wide range of specific actions including the chemotaxis and activation of monocytes, the selective chemotaxis of memory T cells, the inhibition of hematopoietic stem cell proliferation, and the induction of neutrophil infiltration in vivo. A complementary DNA encoding the IL-8 receptor from human neutrophils has now been isolated. The amino acid sequence shows that the receptor is a member of the superfamily of receptors that couple to guanine nucleotide binding proteins (G proteins). The sequence is 29% identical to that of receptors for the other neutrophil chemoattractants, fMet-Leu-Phe and C5a. Mammalian cells transfected with the IL-8 receptor cDNA clone bind IL-8 with high affinity and respond specifically to IL-8 by transiently mobilizing calcium. The IL-8 receptor may be part of a subfamily of related G protein-coupled receptors that transduce signals for the IL-8 family of pro-inflammatory cytokines. 相似文献

Reference is made to the contrast between actual and potential yields from grassland, to the main factors affecting the development of effective grassland systems for dairy cows and to the technical developments which are now available. The unrealized potential for simplification and increased output from grazing systems is stressed. The available information on the effect of mechanical grazing and storage feeding systems is reviewed and the practical advantages and problems of these systems summarized. Simple calculations are made of the capital involved in large herd organization and the increases in herbage yield or efficiency of use needed to justify this additional expenditure. For large herds a relatively small increase (10%) in output per acre would justify the annual capital charge and feed cost for mechanical harvesting or tower silage; greater increases would be needed for grass drying (22%) or for tower silos in smaller (100-cow) herds (16%). Other important but less tangible factors influencing the choice of system are referred to. It is considered that unless herbage yields can be greatly increased by the use of mechanical grazing compared with normal grazing, the practical difficulties of this method outweigh its advantages. If tower silos allow more efficient conservation and easier feeding, they may be worthwhile, but the search should continue for cheaper alternatives. Only in very large-scale enterprises can grass drying, solely to produce cattle feed, be justified, although this method offers the greatest potential. In view of the complexities, it is suggested that computer models may help to resolve such problems and one such study is briefly described. 相似文献

Abstract. Fish mortality in the River Umia, near Villagarcia de Arosa, Pontevedra, Spain, which occurred after a discharge from a food sewage works, is studied. Physico-chemical parameters of water samples from sewage and from the River Umia were studied and concentrations of ammonia sufficiently high to cause toxic effects in fish (702 mg/1 and 302 mg/1 as total ammonia) were found. The toxicity of two concentrations of ammonia was investigated on goldfish, Carassius auratus (L.), using water quality values the same as found in the River Umia, to obtain the same concentrations of un-ionized ammonia (2·13 mg/1 and 0·91 mg/1). Fish exposed to high concentrations died within 24 h and three of six, which were exposed to the lowest concentration died within 96h. All fish at first showed symptoms of hyper excitability and hyperventilation, and at times of rest showed a decrease in respiration.
