The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of systemic fucoxanthin treatment on alveolar bone resorption in rats with periodontitis. Thirty rats were divided into control, experimental periodontitis (EP), and experimental periodontitis-fucoxanthin (EP-FUCO) groups. Periodontitis was induced by ligature for four weeks. After removal of the ligature, the rats in the EP-FUCO group were treated with a single dose of fucoxanthin (200 mg/kg bw) per day for 28 consecutive days. At the end of the study, all of the rats were euthanized and intracardiac blood and mandible tissue samples were obtained for biochemical, immunohistochemical, and histometric analyses. Fucoxanthin treatment resulted in a slight decrease in tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, and interleukin-6 levels and a significant decrease in oxidative stress index. It was observed that fucoxanthin caused a significant reduction in receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-β ligand (RANKL) levels and a statistically non-significant elevation in osteoprotegerin and bone-alkaline phosphatase levels. There were no significant differences in alveolar bone loss levels between the EP and EP-FUCO groups. This experimental study revealed that fucoxanthin provides a limited reduction in alveolar bone resorption in rats with periodontitis. One of the mechanisms underlying the mentioned limited effect might be related to the ability of fucoxanthin to inhibit oxidative stress-related RANKL-mediated osteoclastogenesis.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To isolate and characterize the cDNA sequence of canine stromelysin-1 (matrix metalloproteinase [MMPI-3), screen various naturally developing primary tumors of dogs, and assess the effect of stromelysin-1 on survival of dogs with cancer. SAMPLE POPULATION: 3 canine cell lines and biopsy specimens of primary tumors collected from 54 dogs. PROCEDURE: 3 canine cell lines and biopsy specimens of primary tumors collected from 54 dogs at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital were used in the study. Primer sets based on human stromelysin-1 and consensus sequences were designed for expression, screening, and isolation. Two additional primer sets were designed for screening. Samples were assayed at least in duplicate. Data were analyzed for differences in expression of stromelysin-1 on the basis of sex, age, metastasis, malignant versus nonmalignant tissue origin, and duration of patient survival. RESULTS: A 1,479-bp cDNA nucleotide sequence was amplified from established canine cell lines. The open reading frame encoded a protein consisting of 478 amino acids. This sequence was 70% to 88% homologous with stromelysin-1 of other species at the amino acid level. Fifty-four samples were screened for stromelysin-1. Of these, 34 (63%) had positive results and 20 (37%) had negative results for expression. Stromelysin-1 and metastasis were associated with a poor prognosis for survival. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Stromelysin-1 is a potential activator of other members of the MMP family. Additional studies are needed to investigate the relationship between stromelysin-1 production and aggressive biological behavior of tumors in dogs.  相似文献

Dermatophytosis in dogs is variable and can clinically mimics other skin diseases. Diagnosis based on clinical presentation may be misleading and additional laboratory tests are needed for a final diagnosis. Objective— To describe percutaneous fluoroscopically assisted placement of a trans-iliosacral rod to stabilize sacroiliac fracture-luxations after limited open reduction.
Study Design— Retrospective clinical case series.
Animals— Dogs (n=5) with sacroiliac fracture-luxations.
Methods— Medical records and radiographs were reviewed to evaluate implant placement, fracture reduction, pelvic canal diameter ratio, maintenance of reduction, implant stability, assessment of union, and to identify any complications. Owners were contacted to obtain long-term assessment of limb function.
Results— Dogs weighed between 6 and 31 kg. Trans-iliosacral rods were placed correctly traversing the sacral body. Mean (±SD) percent reduction of the sacroiliac joint was 92.9±6.6%. Pelvic canal diameter ratio did not differ significantly between time periods. With the exception of 1 dog, which died in the early postoperative period, all sacroiliac fracture-luxations healed without appreciable complications. Three dogs were sound and 1 dog had a subtle lameness at final physical and radiographic examination (mean±SD: 217±205 days). Owners assessed their dog's limb function (mean±SD: 355±205 days) as good or excellent.
Conclusions— Trans-iliosacral rods can be accurately placed using intraoperative fluoroscopy after limited open reduction of sacroiliac fracture-luxations. Trans-iliosacral rods provided bilateral secure fixation, allowed early weight-bearing and dogs consistently had good long-term clinical results.
Clinical Relevance— Trans-iliosacral rods are suitable implants for the stabilization of sacroiliac fracture-luxations, particularly in dogs with bilateral fracture-luxations and/or concurrent musculoskeletal injuries.  相似文献

Analysis of recombination between loci (linkage analysis) has been a cornerstone of human genetic research, enabling investigators to localize and, ultimately, identify genetic loci. However, despite these efforts little is known about patterns of meiotic exchange in human germ cells or the mechanisms that control these patterns. Using recently developed immunofluorescence methodology to examine exchanges in human spermatocytes, we have identified remarkable variation in the rate of recombination within and among individuals. Subsequent analyses indicate that, in humans and mice, this variation is linked to differences in the length of the synaptonemal complex. Thus, at least in mammals, a physical structure, the synaptonemal complex, reflects genetic rather than physical distance.  相似文献

The antioxidant activity of the water extract of Tilia argentea Desf ex DC was determined by the thiocyanate method. The antioxidant activity of the water extract increased with the increasing amount of lyophilized extract (50-400 microg) added into the linoleic acid emulsion. Statistically significant effect was determined in 100 microg and higher amounts. Antioxidant activities of water extracts of tilia (Tilia argentea Desf ex DC), sage (Salvia triloba L.), and two Turkish black teas commercially called Rize tea and young shoot tea (Camellia sinensis) were compared. For comparison studies, 100 microg portions of extracts were added into test samples. All samples were able to show statistically significant antioxidant effect. Both of the tea extracts showed highest antioxidant activities, nevertheless, differences between tilia and sage and tilia and tea were not statistically significant (for both cases p > 0.05). Like antioxidant activity, the reducing power of water extract of Tilia argentea Desf ex DC was also concentration dependent. Even in the presence of 50 microg of extract, the reducing power was significantly higher than that of the control (p < 0.05) in which there was no extract. Unlike antioxidant activity, the highest reducing power activity was shown by sage extract. Among the tea extracts, young shoot extract was the most effective one, however, it had significantly lower activity than sage (p < 0.05). Although tea flower had the lowest reducing power activity, it was higher than that of tilia. But this difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). From these results, we could suggest that although the reducing power of a substance may be an indicator of its potential antioxidant activity, there may not always be a linear correlation between these two activities. In addition, antimicrobial activities of each of the above extracts were studied by disk diffusion methods on different test microorganisms. None of the extracts showed antibacterial activity on the studied microorganisms.  相似文献

Tree species differ in their effect on soil development and nutrient cycling. Conversion of beech coppice to pine plantations can alter soil physical and chemical properties, which in turn may have significant impacts on soil microbial biomass C and N (Cmic, Nmic). The major objective of this study was to evaluate soil quality changes associated with the forest conversion in humid NW Turkey. Results from this study showed that levels of soil organic carbon (Corg), total nitrogen (Nt), moisture, Cmic and Nmic under beech coppice were consistently higher but levels of pH, CaCO3 and EC were lower compared to pine plantation. Differences between the forest stands in Cmic and Nmic were mainly related to the size of the Corg stores in soil and to tree species. In addition, high level of CaCO3 is likely to reduce pools of soil organic C and possibly even microbial biomass C and N in pine forests. The average Cmic:Nmic ratios were higher in soils under beech coppice than pine plantation, while Cmic:Corg and Nmic:Nt percentages were similar in both forest types. These results revealed the differences in microbial community structure associated with different tree species and the complex interrelationships between microbial biomass, soil characteristics, litter quantity and quality. Coccidia were detected in the faeces of 556 out of 592 sheep (93.9%) in sheep in Kars province. The prevalence of coccidiosis was significantly higher (p>0.01) in young (97.9%) and immature sheep (96.6%) than in adult sheep (90.2%). Mixed infections were widespread (71.5%). Ten species of Eimeria were recognized. These species (and their prevalences) were: Eimeria ovinoidalis (47.7%), E. bakuensis (E. ovina) (46.6%), E. parva (37.1%), E. granulosa (27.7%), E. ahsata (23.4%), E. pallida (23.2%), E. faurei (15.1%), E. intricata (13.9%), E. crandallis (13.7%) and E. punctata (2.3%). Eimeria punctata is reported in sheep from Turkey for the first time. The mean oocyst count from infected animals was 3451±409 opg (range 50–117 600). The mean was higher (9529±502) in young sheep. Differences in the counts from young, immature and adult sheep were statistically significant (p>0.01). However, no clinical cases of coccidiosis were encountered.  相似文献
