ABSTRACT:   To clarify faunal overlap between a seagrass bed and adjacent coral and sand areas, and the number of reef fishes utilizing the seagrass bed as juvenile habitat, visual censuses were conducted at Amitori Bay, Iriomote Island, Japan. The numbers of species and individuals of fishes were significantly higher in the coral area than in the seagrass bed and sand area. Cluster and ordination analyses based on the number of individuals of each species demonstrated that the fish assemblage structure differed among the three habitats in each season, but with some overlaps. Approximately half the seagrass bed fishes occurred in the adjacent coral area (coral–seagrass species). Dominant species of coral–seagrass species utilized the seagrass bed as an important juvenile habitat. Thus, some overlaps in habitat use were present between the seagrass bed and adjacent coral area. Despite such overlaps, however, coral–seagrass species accounted for only approximately 15% of coral reef fishes overall, indicating that most of the latter hardly utilize the seagrass bed directly in the study area.  相似文献

Abstract. An antigenic comparison of ten strains of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) and a single strain of European eel virus (EEV) revealed the presence of three distinct groups separable by cross-neutralization. The 1/ r value calculated from the formula r=√r1× r2 (Archetti & Horsfall 1950) was used to divide the virus strains into: group I, which included all six U.S.A. strains: Buhl, Idaho; Reno, Nevada; ATCC VR 299; Powder Mill, New Hampshire; West Buxton, Maine; and Cascade Locks, Oregon: group II, the European strains: ďHonnincthun, France; Sp Denmark; and Bonnamy, France: group III, Ab Denmark and EEV. The group II European strains of IPNV were more closely related to the group I U.S.A. strains than to those viruses in group III. European eel virus (EEV) was antigenically most closely related to the Ab strain of IPNV.  相似文献

A male Thoroughbred fetus was aborted on day 251 of pregnancy. Gross and histological examinations detected systemic granulomatous lesions in many superficial and visceral lymph nodes and organs including the liver, tonsils, lungs, thymus, spleen, right thyroid gland and gastrointestinal tract, and suppurative placentitis, pyogranulomatous amnionitis and intralesional acid-fast bacilli were also detected. An examination of the DNA base sequence of the β subunit of RNA polymerase demonstrated that Mycobacterium avium strain 104 had infected several organs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of equine fetal mycobacterial infection in Japan.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   To clarify the feeding habits of tidal mudflat fishes, the gut contents of 29 fish species, collected from unvegetated tidal mudflats in Tokyo Bay, central Honshu, Japan, were examined. Ontogenetic changes in food preference were recognized in 21 species, including several of commercial importance (e.g. Acanthogobius flavimanus , Konosirus punctatus , Mugil cephalus cephalus , Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis , and Sardinella zunasi ). In general, larvae and/or juveniles of these species fed mainly on small zooplankton or benthic harpacticoid copepods, later switching to other prey items with growth (e.g. gammaridean amphipods, mysids, polychaetes, detritus, bivalves, and juvenile fishes). A cluster analysis based on dietary overlaps showed that the tidal mudflat fish assemblage comprised six feeding guilds (small benthic and epiphytic crustacean, zooplankton, detritus, mollusc, polychaete, and fish feeders). Of these, small benthic and epiphytic crustacean feeders were the most abundantly represented in the number of species.  相似文献

Abstract. The stages of kuruma shrimp susceptible to BMNV were determined by water-borne infection at the fertilized egg, nauplius, zoea, mysis, and 2-day (P-2), 4-day (P-4), 6-day (P-6), 8-day (P-8) and 10-day-old (P-10) post-larval stages. Susceptibility to infection tended to decrease with advancing stages of development from zoea to P-10. The stages from zoea to P-4 were very susceptible, with much higher mortality and lower growth rates in virus inoculated animals compared to controls. P-6 shrimp were also highly susceptible with all inoculated animals becoming infected with the virus. However, this group grew only slightly less well than controls and no mortality was observed. P-8 and P-10 post-larvae were refractory to the disease showing no mortality and no loss of growth, even though some were slightly infected with the virus. Fertilized eggs and nauplii did not become infected with the virus using water-borne inoculation.  相似文献

Abstract. Infectivity experiments were undertaken by water-borne inoculation of kuruma shrimp, Penaeus japonicus Bate, larvae with BMN virus. Mysis stage larvae were inoculated with the virus by exposure for 2h in sea water containing a homogenized and filtered preparation (450nm) of naturally BMN virus-infected shrimp stored for about 7 weeks at −80°C. Inoculated shrimp stocked in rearing jars were examined to determine whether nuclear hypertrophy of the mid-gut gland epithelial cells characteristic for BMN virus infection could be observed in fresh squash preparations under dark field illumination equipped with a wet-type condenser. Four days post-inoculation at 25–30°C incubation temperature were considered to be satisfactory for the experimental trial.  相似文献
