In the summer of 1999 there was an outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium DT120 in people in the north of England which was unusual in being sensitive to antimicrobial drugs. The outbreak was linked to mutton and lamb from a local abattoir, and attention focused on four holding paddocks used to retain sheep before slaughter. In November 1999, samples of soil and faeces were taken from these paddocks and samples of faeces were taken from the concrete race leading from them. Salmonella Typhimurium was isolated from 59 of the 100 samples. Between January 2000 and October 2000 seven visits were made to the abattoir at each of which 100 samples were taken from the paddocks and concrete race and examined for the presence of Salmonella. The paddocks remained heavily contaminated with S Typhimurium DT120 until April when there was a marked reduction in the recovery of the organism. By June the contamination was minimal and by August it had disappeared, and the organism was not recovered in September or October.  相似文献

Thyroxine levels in serum of lambs and ewes were measured to determine their usefulness in assessing iodine nutrition of sheep. Lambs born on properties with no history of goitre had serum thyroxine concentrations more than twice that recorded in their mothers. These high values decreased to a level similar to that in the ewes after 8 weeks. In goitrous lambs younger than 2 weeks old, serum thyroxine concentrations were less than their ewe levels. Lambs born to ewes supplemented with iodine during pregnancy had higher thyroxine levels than lambs of control ewes.
A survey of 80 flocks of ewes in Victoria showed that 40% had a low mean thyroxine concentration (less than 50 nmol/l), but only one of these properties had reported an outbreak of goitre. It is suggested that serum thyroxine levels in newborn lambs may provide a more sensitive indicator of hypothyroidism associated with iodine deficiency than ewe levels.  相似文献

Groups of specific-pathogen-free lambs were inoculated with combinations of parainfluenza virus type 3 (PI3), Pasteurella haemolytica (P.h.) and Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae ( (M.o.). Acute, necrotising bronchopneumonia developed in 8/9 lambs inoculated with PI3 followed by P.h. whereas only 1/5 lambs inoculated with PI3 followed by a combination of M.o. and P.h. developed a pneumonic lesion. When M.o. was inoculated 29 days before PI3 and P.h., pneumonia developed in 3/4 lambs but M.o. was not reisolated from any of the lungs. Pneumonia was observed in 1/5 lambs inoculated with P.h. alone and in 1/5 inoculated with M.o. plus P.h. In addition, one lamb in the latter group died of acute septicaemic pasteurellosis. None of the lambs inoculated with M.o. alone, PI3 alone or PI3 followed by M.o. had any gross or microscopic evidence of pneumonia although the virus alone, or in combination, did produce minor pulmonary lesions. These data suggest that M.o. is not an important primary or secondary lung pathogen.  相似文献
