ANIMAL STUDIED: A tumor of the left eye with involvement of the brain and kidney was diagnosed in a 4-year-old Neapolitan mastiff. PROCEDURE: The dog presented with acute glaucoma of the left eye. Peripheral corneal vascularization and severe corneal edema obscured examination of deeper structures. Because of concurrent progressive neurologic signs the dog was euthanized and a postmortem examination was performed. The eyes, brain and samples from the lung, heart, liver and kidneys were fixed in 4% neutral buffered formalin and embedded in paraffin wax. Sections were examined by light microscopy including histochemical and immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS: The ocular tumor originated from the ciliary body and was composed of small islets and cords of poorly differentiated, oval to polyhedral cells surrounded by abundant ground substance. Areas with chondroid differentiation were observed. Rosettes were not found. Metastases with the same morphology were present in the brain and in one kidney. CONCLUSION: An intraocular malignant teratoid medulloepithelioma with metastases to the brain and kidney is presented.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to calculate the reliability of the examination of lymph node cytologies by individuals with little experience in the field of cytology. After an introduction comparable to the content of a cytology seminar, 11 students of veterinary medicine were asked to assess 20 slides with different lymphadenopathies (hyperplasia: n = 4, lymphadenitis: n = 4, malignant lymphoma: n = 4, different other neoplasias: n = 8). A correct classification according to these categories was achieved on the average (median value) in 18 of the 20 cases (minimum: 16, maximum: 20). The majority of the investigators also found a correct further differentiation for some slides, particularly with respect to the type of non-lymphatic neoplasia. The results of this study emphasize that the experience gained in a single cytology seminar enables only few individuals to reliably differentiate lymphadenopathies. The error rate, which was 10 to 20% for the majority of the investigators, however, has to be assessed critically due to the clinical consequences of misdiagnosis. This emphasizes the necessity of experience even for interpretation of lymph node cytology.  相似文献

The pharmacokinetics of a low molecular weight heparin (LMWH; Fragmin D) was studied in dogs after intravenous and subcutaneous administration, based on antifactor Xa- (anti-fXa-) activity. Each dosage was examined in 5 adult Beagles. After intravenous application of 25, 50 and 100 anti-fXaU./kg body weight (BW) the mean peak plasma heparin activity of 0.52 +/- 0.12 (x +/- s), 1.08 +/- 0.23 and 1.86 +/- 0.17 anti-fXaU./ml, respectively, was measured. After subcutaneous application of 50, 100 and 200 anti-fXaU./kg BW maximum heparin activity in the plasma was determined after 144-216 minutes (mean values) of 0.28 +/- 0.01, 0.52 +/- 0.06 or 1.09 +/- 0.20 anti-fXaU./ml. Intravenous application of LMWH has a short plasma terminal half-life (t50) between 49 and 76 minutes which depended on the dosage. After administration of 50 anti-fXaU./kg BW (74 minutes) and 100 anti-fXaU./kg BW (76 minutes) no essential difference was shown. A distinctly longer t50 was found after subcutaneous injection. After injection of 50, 100 and 200 anti-fXaU./kg BW t50 values of 81, 123 and 182 minutes were calculated. According to this, with increasing dosage a decrease of the total clearance was found for both application routes. The apparent volume of distribution after intravenously applicated LMWH ranged between 50 and 70 ml/kg BW. The absolute bioavailability calculated for the subcutaneous NMH-injection of 50 and 100 anti-fXaU./kg BW was 107% and 104%, respectively.  相似文献

Unusually large electric field effects have been measured for the absorption spectra of carotenoids (spheroidene) in the B800-850 light-harvesting complex from the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides. Quantitative analysis shows that the difference in the permanent dipole moment between the ground state and excited states in this protein complex is substantially larger than for pure spheroidene extracted from the protein. The results demonstrate the presence of a large perturbation on the electronic structure of this nearly symmetric carotenoid due to the organized environment in the protein. This work also provides an explanation for the seemingly anomalous dependence of carotenoid band shifts on transmembrane potential and a generally useful approach for calibrating electric field-sensitive dyes that are widely used to probe potentials in biological systems.  相似文献

One of the many challenges of building a scalable quantum computer is single-shot measurement of all the quantum bits (qubits). We have used simultaneous single-shot measurement of coupled Josephson phase qubits to directly probe interaction of the qubits in the time domain. The concept of measurement crosstalk is introduced, and we show that its effects are minimized by careful adjustment of the timing of the measurements. We observe the antiphase oscillation of the two-qubit 01 and 10 states, consistent with quantum mechanical entanglement of these states, thereby opening the possibility for full characterization of multiqubit gates and elementary quantum algorithms.  相似文献

Calorie restriction increases life span in many organisms, including the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. From a large-scale analysis of 564 single-gene-deletion strains of yeast, we identified 10 gene deletions that increase replicative life span. Six of these correspond to genes encoding components of the nutrient-responsive TOR and Sch9 pathways. Calorie restriction of tor1D or sch9D cells failed to further increase life span and, like calorie restriction, deletion of either SCH9 or TOR1 increased life span independent of the Sir2 histone deacetylase. We propose that the TOR and Sch9 kinases define a primary conduit through which excess nutrient intake limits longevity in yeast.  相似文献

The growth-independent effect of ovine growth hormone (oGH) and oGH + cortisol treatment on seawater (SW) adaptation in immature rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri was investigated. Fish were injected every second day with saline, 2.0 μg oGH/g or 2.0 μg oGH + 8.0 μg cortisol/g for a maximum of 8 injections in freshwater (FW). Subgroups were transferred to 28‰ SW after 4 or 8 injections, and changes in plasma Na+ and Cl, muscle water content and gill Na+/K+-ATPase activity were measured. In both of the hormone-treated groups retained in FW, gill Na+/K+-ATPase activity and interlamellar chloride cell density increased. The effects were most pronounced in the oGH + cortisol group after 2 weeks of treatment. After transfer to SW most of the control fish died due to the osmotic stress, whereas in the hormone-treated groups, mortality was low and there was a positive correlation between pretransfer gill Na+/K+-ATPase and the ability to maintain ionic-osmotic homeostasis after SW transfer. After two weeks of oGH + cortisol treatment, gill Na+/K+-ATPase activity was maximal. In contrast, after SW transfer, Na+/K+-ATPase activity increased further in the oGH-treated group. This group regulated ionic-osmotic parameters less effectively than the oGH + cortisol-treated group. The data indicate that GH and cortisol are important hormones in the regulation of hypoosmoregulatory mechanisms in S. gairdneri.  相似文献

The pale-headed brush-finch (Atlapetes pallidiceps) is threatened with extinction due to habitat loss, but very little is known about its ecological requirements. We used multiple logistic regression to study habitat selection of this species at landscape, territory, and nest site scales in order to make recommendations about effective management. Habitat selection by the sympatric stripe-headed brush-finch (Buarremon torquatus) was examined with the same methods in order to analyse interspecific resource partitioning and potential competition. The pale-headed brush-finch selected semi-open habitat types with intermediate scrub heights, and avoided forests. Nest sites depended on the presence of vines or bamboo. By contrast, the stripe-headed brush-finch chose dense habitat with low ground cover under tall vegetation and avoided semi-open habitat. The two species had overlapping territories but differed significantly in microhabitat use and the use of vegetation strata. We found no convincing evidence that the stripe-headed brush-finch displaces the pale-headed brush-finch from optimal habitat. The preservation of semi-open scrubland maintained by low-intensity grazing is suggested for future conservation of the pale-headed brush-finch.  相似文献
